No I've found it difficult to find anything on John Patterson, perhaps he wasn't born in Norfolk. I think that Patterson is possibly a more 'northern' name, but I don't know. Thank you for everything else though, you've been very helpful :)

Just stumbled across this thread - these people are my direct ancestors :D
Like you I am still searching for John Patterson. I don't know whether it's a northern name but some of the family ended up in the north.

I am always interested in the Patterson name esp relating to Great Yarmouth.
My 4th Great Grandmother was Ann PATTERSON who married James NEWBY, 22 Nov 1760 Lowestoft, Suffolk.
They had Children (ones I have found are);
James 1753
Mary 1767
John 1778-1849***, he Married Charlotte GARWOOD 1799 Suffolk
There Children were born Great Yarmouth;
2 of their Sons were named John Patterson Newby and James Patterson Newby.
I am descended from their Daughter Mary Ann Hannah Newby 1820-1909
I have nothing else on Ann Patterson.
James Newby originated from London.

Up until last year I was in contact with a Robert Patterson, but sadly he passed away while I was on holiday. He told me that the family may have came from Scotland, but he also suffered with dementia so other times he wouldn't know anything about it. I didn't know him for long, but he really was a lovely lovely man, he was cousins with my grandfather as my grandfathers mother was Eliza Mary Ann Patterson.

Hello, I have just joined this group. (March 2022). I am trying to find a family connection. My mother was born and brought up on a farm in Northern Ireland, which I visited many times as a young boy. This was owned originally by the family Mauleverer who came from Yorkshire. They came to England in 1066 with Duke William of Normandy. Sir Richard Mauleverer was High Sheriff of Yorkshire, knighted by King Charles in 1630. His son (1599-1655) was a politocian and a roundhead.
They owned land in Northern Ireland/Ulster by the late 1600s which I assume was part of the Ulster Plantation.
Their tenant was Henry Patterson. Henry's eldest son was also called Henry who moved to Norfolf and Gt Yarmouth has been mentioned. With eldest sons taking the father's name and eventually the farm I am wondering why he left. The Ulster Plantation had money problems unable to support the farms there, perhaps came into it. The plantation was based on English or Scots farming the land, providing a militia from the farm workers to keep the Catholics under control! And collect taxes.
The Henry who moved to Norfolk was born in 1730 at Knocknakielt (the farm), which is in County Londonderry, near Maghera.
The house and farm eventually was owned by the Montgomery family, predecessors of Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery, and then onto the Patterson family.
Any snippets, ideas or comments would be welcome.
