I would very much appreciate the help of fresh eyes on both sides of the Atlantic.
Robert Dobson was born 25 June 1876 in Blackburn, Lancashire to Thomas Dobson and Nancy Riley.
In 1925 he married Anna Victoria Bousquoit in Springfield Vermont.
Both Robert and Anna died in Springfield, he in 1947 and she in 1985.
But when did he emigrate from UK to USA?
The 1930 census says he entered the country in 1885
The 1940 census says that he was naturalised but so far found nothing else to confirm his arrival.
I have a headache now! Is anyone able to see what I haven't found as yet - Please :-*
I'm still looking but just thought fresh eyes would help. :)

Hi Sandra, yes I've seen those, apart from the WW1 Draft.
Also a 1901 (Canadian) which says he immigrated in 1896. Not too many Robert Dobsons but enough, no wonder I'm confused!
I haven't confirmed it yet but think his parents both died back in Lancashire, but you never know, they may turn up somewhere.
I'm on duty in the family history recearch centre today, but as it's fairly quiet I have time to carry on with my own work.

The 1901 census has his correct birth date - 25 Jun 1876, but says he's a journalist. A bit different to his later occupation, but again - who can say what is correct?
I've just checked nd realise that I did find the WW1 draft reg. Birth date transcribed as 2 June when it is clearly 25 in the image, but there was no way to add the correct one. :-X

Did his sister Mary Jane marry Bertram CHASE?
She gives her year of immigration as 1878 on the 1901 census.
Maureen
-
Hi Maureen, Robert did have a sister Mary Jane, born 1873, not sure what happened to her though as I can't even find her in 1881 census.
Neither can I find mother Nancy or Robert. Father is boarding with in-laws.
Did the Mary Jane that you mention marry in USA? Perhaps I should follow her for a while.
Susan
:)
-
A-Ha. Just found the marriage!
Will take a proper look at that as the parents' names are correct, even if 'Riley' is spelt incorrectly.
-
There is also a death record for Edith May Chase -18 January 1896 Concord New Hampshire. Father Bertram F chase and Mother Mary Jane Dobson.
Burial :- Blossom Hill Cemetery :'(
Sandra
-
So, all is correct there. Pretty sure that the death of Thomas Dobson that I found could be right, to be confirmed by the burial record.
Nancy came to Montreal then? Another search coming up.
I knew I'd get some decent help on here ;)
Thanks for the extra info there Sandra.
time to pack up her and head for home. Guess what I'll be doing for the rest of the afternoon and evening :)

Also a death for Arthur E Chase - 11 August 1893 Hudson New Hampshire - Father Bertram Chase. Mother Mary Jane Dobson.

Hi msr,
In the 1901 Canadian census, he is a journalier (French).....translation is labourer.

Je vous remercie beaucoup mon ami ;D
A marriage record for Harold B Chase born 1895 and aged 19 years - 18 March 1914 - Nashua, New Hampshire - to Edwina M Schneider aged 21 years, daughter of Walter W Schneider and Elizabeth McCoombs.
Harold B Chase son of Bertram F Chase and Mary Jane Dobson.
Sandra
-
Thanks for that DB, I obviously didn't read it properly. Makes more sense though.
Now need to discover when Nancy left, and who with.
Home now, ready for a coffee!
Thanks Sandra for your finds. Sad losing children, just as her mother did. I know that Nancy definitely lost 2 children around the age of 1. :'(
But now I see from your last post that at least 1 of Mary Jane's children lived till adulthood.

Now, that is interesting Sandra, Bertram dying 1914. I have found a marriage, supposededly 1909, in Boston. Mary J Chase, formerly Dobson, and parents Thomas and Nancy. That shouts of a divorce somewhere!
-
Yes, just looking at that. What a shame, they seem to have given a child up for adoption - strange ::)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N4DD-ZTT
Sandra
-
I just knew I be sidetracked ::)
Haven't found the divorce yet but Bertram Foster Chase married again in 1905.
A curious thing about Robert Dobson, who I started the search with. He was rather mature when married, and his bride somewhat younger, but it was apparently her 2nd marriage. However, both widowed and divorced were crossed through. I wonder if the marriage when she was 18 had been annulled?
-
Now that I've eaten I can continue.
According to the 1900 census Bertram was saying he was single (if I've found the right one), so the divorce must have been late 90's. Although I'm sure I saw Mary Jane in a 1901 1900 census, as a servant but saying she was married. Need to find that again.
-
This looked like Mary Jane - Nashua Ward 1, Hillsborough, New Hampshire 1900

Francis Goodwin 5 Helen Goodwin 2
Louise T Dowling 39
Mary J Chase 27 Born Eng. Feb 1873. Parents born Eng. Immigrated 1878. Married 1893. Had 1 child and 1 survives.
Sandra
-
Hi Sandra, yes that's the one. :)
She still says married though, although Bertram says single on his 1900 census. I wonder which is correct :-\
He does admit to being divorced on next marriage though.
I've found a tree with Mary Jane mentioned as mother of the groom. The owner has the correct names of her parents, but completely wrong details from there. Now, do I contact or leave it alone, just can't decide, as I know from past such occurrences that contact isn't always appreciated.
-
:)
Why are you researching Robert??
Probably missed something...somewhere.
-
Hi Maureen. Sorry, I probably didn't say.
Robert and Mary Jane are my 1st cousins twice removed. Nancy, my gt gt aunt, sister of my gt grandmother.

Could Nancy Dobon have re-married and immigrated to Canada or the USA ? A couple of marriage possibilities for Nancy Ann Dobson in Blackburn in 1882. Did your Nancy have a middle name "Ann" ?
Sandra
-
Is this Nancy Riley with her Mother ??? St Paul Blackburn 1861 ???
George Shorrock 39 Alice Shorrock 38
Mary Riley 42
Ellen Riley 15 Nancy Riley 13
Margt Ann Riley 11
Robert Cook Riley 8
Betsy Jane Riley 6
John William Riley 8 months.
Harriet Cenlock 1
Many deaths for a William Riley and Mary Riley in Blackburn between 1861 and 1871 which could be either of them.
Sandra
-
Hi Sandra, yes it is. My great grandma was Margaret Ann, sadly she died the day before her 40th birthday from horrendous burns :'(
The earlier question about Nancy, no she didn't have a second name (as far as I know), but not at baptism.
-
IF that is Nancy with her mother in 1861 above - Perhaps this is a long shot BUT could this be her Mother Mary with a brother John in Baltimore in 1900 ???
Baltimore Ward 24, Baltimore City (Independent City), Maryland 1900
Mary Riley 69 Born March 1821 England. Widowed. Immigrated 1880.
John Riley 40 Born July 1859 England. Immigrated 1879. NA. Bricklayer.
Can see a baptism record for a John William Riley born 10 August 1860 baptised 23 September 1860 to William and Mary Riley. (date slightly out from census but that would not be unusual)
One to bear in mind until we can discount it ???

What about this entry posted by Heatherjulie on the other thread - at first I thought it was your Nancy Riley but the age is way out. This Nancy Ann Dobson married Joseph Morris Dec 1882 - Blackburn - 8e 535 and they had a son Arthur Morris. Family show on 1891 census below. By 1901 Nancy Ann Dobson Morris seems to be with James Lathom and they have a son Joseph Dobson Lathom. That also discounts one of those sets of marriages in 1882 Blackburn. George and Mary Riley wouldn't appear to be partogf the family you are looking for.

One of the children shown on that 1861 Census has a middle name - Robert Cook Riley born 1853.
Suggests the marriage of the parents could be William Riley to Mary Cook - Q4 Oct/Nov/Dec 1844 Blackburn - Vol 21 Page 3.
St Marys Blackburn. Williams Father - George Riley and Mary's - Robert Cook

Hi Sandra
The second - Cooper St is correct but not the first. I'm pretty sure (as much as I can be) that Nancy Ann Dobson is the daughter of Alice. That Nancy married in 1882.
The info in you last post is correct too. Cook sometimes written as Cooke!
-
The John William Riley you mentioned - born 1860, died in 1862.
So many children died in their first few years. :'(
Most of the info on this family I already have, with just a few niggling queries.
It was Robert Dobson cropping up in the US who really started me off again. You know how it is, you find a crumb and it makes you absolutely need to find the whole loaf! ;D
-
For 2 children to end up in the USA, no record of either child on a UK Census, no record of passenger lists popping up as yet and no record of Nancy to be found in the UK, every avenue has to be explored. Which made me wonder if Nancy had remarried and took the children to the USA under another surname. What's that old saying "More ways than one to skin a cat" ;)
Sandra
-
Not enough cats around to skin Sandra ;) Even if I would do such a thing.
Must be getting ready to go out, my daughter is insisting that I go for a walk with her and the dogs! Have about 20 minutes left though.
and 1901 Nancy with James Lathom
James Lathom 42 Nancy Ann Lathom 42
Joseph Dobron Lathom 4
Arthur Morris 18 Alice Dobson 67
Yes Joseph Dobson Latham was born 1897, Nancy re-married in 1895 - to James Laytham.
-
??? ??? ???
Or skin a goat. ;D
Oh for the 1890 census!
It just seems a little "off" somehow that Thomas is married and with his in-laws in 1881!!
Maureen

Exactly so Maureen.
Must be off so will have to wait a few hours before I try again.
Thanks for all the help so far. :)

Hmmm - the mystery is where are Nancy and the children ::)
-
Hmmm - the mystery is where are Nancy and the children ::)
The mystery continues. I still haven't been able to find Nancy, Mary Jane and Robert arriving in USA or Canada. A few teasers but nothing that I can accept as correct.
As for Nancy, have managed to find naught else as yet. At least I have the burials of her children.
So frustrating!
