Title: Place 1861 Census Delmang, Stirlingshire?
Post by: bates on Thursday 26 March 15 10:50 GMT (UK)
Hi all.
I don't know much about Stirlingshire. Most of the family are from Uphall in West Lothian.
But in the 1861 for Cambuslang it says he was born in Delmang, Stirlingshire.

Is this a real place? Sort of looks like Dalmeny.
Sorry for my ignorance.

I'm hoping this place might open up somewhere to research.

Thanks
T:)

You'll need to check the original Census image if you are looking at a transcription.

Looking at addresses on the 1851 Census the nearest one I could find is Dalmary or Dalmaray (http://www.freecen.org.uk/ ).

Do you have his parents names ?

Yes I do have his parents names on an Australian death certificate.

1851 it says he was born in Queensferry Linlithgow

While
1841 it says West Lothian

He is not with his parents in any of these census.

If it's the same man it just might be an error for place of birth on the 1861 Census.  :-\

Haven't looked at the original but if you think it looks like Dalmeny  - could it be the village of Dalmeny which is just outside Queensferry and about 8 miles from the City of Edinburgh??
Maybe Stirlingshire was an error?

Looby :)

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious :)

Hi Looby  :)

Ecclesmachan , Dalmeny , and Queensferry are fairly close to each other.

Ecclesmachan to the South West of Queensferry and Dalmeny.

Ahh ...makes sense . My silly brain read the link as Ecclefechan  ::) which I knew was nowhere near the east coast .

Going to polish my reading glasses now  ;D

1851 it says he was born in Queensferry Linlithgow
1841 it says West Lothian

No problem with that. Linlithgowshire, or the County of Linlithgow, was a synonym for West Lothian. I am not sure when it was introduced, but the historic name of West Lothian was formally restored by Act of Parliament in 1928.

South Queensferry is in the parish of Dalmeny in West Lothian.

I'm looking at John in the hope it will lead me more to his grandparents.
I have a deadend and when I saw Stirlingshire I was hoping for a lead.
I have found lots of little clues and links retrospectively when I have all the facts.

Recently I read in an early Australian newspaper that as a child John herded cows
on the Clyde bank.

This doesn't mean anything to me but I suspect this is outside Glasgow in Carbuslang..... But then I'm not scottish so I don't know....
