Title: Mary McMurray Sweeney
Post by: kathleenmitchell on Friday 27 March 15 16:34 GMT (UK)
Hello all,

I have a brick wall!  Mary McMurray Married George Sweeney and settled in Greenock. George dies in 1874 and is a widower then.  The last date I can put Mary is 1868 when her young daughter dies.

I have spent £££££ on Scotland's people trying every variation of her name and I still cannot find her death.  Does anyone please have any ideas on what I can do?, I am slowly rocking in the corner :'(

Many thanks
Kathy

Is Mary shown as alive on the daughters death cert?  What was the daughters actual date of death

If it was an infant death - when was the daughter born

These look to be the births of children to Mary (Mc) Murray and husband George Sweeney:

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Asweeney~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Ageorge~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Amary~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Amcmurray~

Kathy, any luck with finding any of the family on the 1871 census?

A couple of census opportunities in 1871 for some of the children. Were the family Roman Catholic?

There is this entry for example:

Catherine Sweeney, 11 b. Greenock at the  Catholic Orphanage for Females in 72 Abercromby Street Glasgow/Calton area.

And this one too:

Mary Sweeney, 5 b. Greenock at the Leith Ragged Industrial School Lochend Road in Leith.

Hello,

The youngest daughter Ann was born on 15 July 1868, Greenock and died 21 Aug 1869 Greenock. Mary was still alive when her daughter died.  Strangely enough I cannot find them on the 1871 census, although I have found one son 1871 Glasgow married with a child, on his marriage cert 1871 his mother is not down as deceased.  Another daughter married in 1874 in Greenock and her mother is deceased.

I just cannot find a death cert for her, and without that I cannot find her parents.

Thanks
Kathy

Hi Monica,
yes they were Roman Catholic.  Edward married in Glasgow and moved back to Greenock.  Myles married in Partick and settled in Govan, Catherine married in Greenock aged 17 and stayed there.

Thank you for all your help

Kathy, know you have this entry for 1861, but to help others searching, this is 1861?

George Swenie 40
Mary Swenie 33
Edward Swenie 12
Patrick Swenie 7
Catherine Swenie 3
Miles Swenie 1
Agnes Mcgarity 25 lodger
Thomas Duffy 23 lodger
John Harkin 30 lodger

Address: 2 Broad Close, Greenock

What was George's occupation? Who were his parents? There is this old post here on RC too www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=307110.0

Kathy, with the family being RC, have you looked at the Scotlands People RC burial/deaths database?

Without knowing how accurate Mary's age was from the 1861 census, there are these possible entries for example:

17/01/1874 - Mary SWEENEY aged 48   - GLASGOW, ST PETER'S DALBETH CEMETERY

09/08/1869 - Mary SWEENIE aged 42 - GLASGOW, ST PETER'S DALBETH CEMETERY

I searched SP for searched for: Surname: "*sw*en*"; Forename: "mar*"; Sex: "Any"; Date From: 01 January 1868; Date To: 31 December 1874.

Old Dalbeth/St Peter's Cemetery is a good possibility for any RC burial within the area. My Scottish family line is all buried there, regardless of where in Lanarkshire they had died.

Obviously there is no further surname showing on the index to help further for now  :-\

Hello Monica,

George was a Shipyard Labourer, the only details of his parents that I have are on his death cert which states his father as Edward Sweeney, but no mother was listed.

Hi Monica,

checked them on SP and it is neither of them  :-\  even tried using her maiden name as her surname, still nothing.

The fact that we really have none of the family in 1871 would make you think they may have been outside of Scotland around that time, However, as we know, that is not a given... :-\ May explain though why you can't find Mary's death or the family in general for 1871 in Scotland.

We need Mary dieing in Scotland really though to have any chance of confirming her parents' names.

Are any of the children's christenings showing on the RC database on SP? Sometimes witnesses names can give clues to extended family for the parents.
