Title: Linbrae Farm Carmunnock - John Gilmour
Post by: brucecumming on Wednesday 01 April 15 02:44 BST (UK)
I see an OPR birth record from 1778 with the father John Gilmour of Carmunnock. He is "of Linbrae". The only reference I can find of Linbrae is here:

http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/historical-tax-rolls/land-tax-rolls-1645-1831/land-tax-rolls-lanarkshire-volume-04/28

It lists "John Gilmour   Ten penny Land of Linbrae". I looked at some detailed maps but could not find this location. I know the Gilmours lived on the Cathkin Estate at some point.

Thank you.

I assume you have looked at the old maps on the National Library of Scotland maps website.

In Scottish records, if someone is "of" a place, as opposed to "in" or "at" a place, they actually own the land. In that case there will probably be genealogical details in the Register of Sasines for Lanarkshire. Even the index to this can be helpful.

How about searching for Linn Brae, as mentioned here:

The index to the Register of Sasines 1720-1780 does not list any Gilmour 'of Linbrae' or similar.

There is a John Gilmour, mason, Carmunnock, in Vol XXI, pages 24 and 26. Vol XXI covers 1778-1780.

There may be later sasines but there is no published index from 1781. You would need to go to the National Records of Scotland, or get someone to go on your behalf.

That spelling ("Linn Brae" versus "Linbrae") helped. I can see via a current search listing Linn Brae at 18 Busby Road within the town of Carmunnock, not far from the church.

Thank you.

Thank you for that info. For future reference, is the index to the Register of Sasines only available as a physical document (not online)? I have not been able to locate any info like that online. I am not in Scotland so rely on online resources. Thanks again.

As far as I know the indexes and abridgements are only available as printed books until 1780, and in digital form, but not online, at the National Records of Scotland from 1781 onwards.
