Title: GERMANY: Heigold Family (German Pork Butcher)
Post by: Carol Lylyk on Friday 03 April 15 19:37 BST (UK)
I am looking for any connection to the family of Georg Henry Heigold Pork butcher born about 1820 in Wurttemberg Germany.  He married in England 1844 to Maria Lant.

Hallo Carol,

Welcome to Rootschat :)

I see you've already discovered the DBSIG: German Pork Butchers and entered your research interests there.

Hello Carol

I haven't any family connections to the Heigolds, apart from the fact that my gt grandfather Herman Pfisterer was born there.

I read a tragic/comic report in one of the historical newspapers. Apparently, a William Esher, pork butcher of Sheffield, married in the morning but his honeymoon was of short duration as he was arrested and sent to prison in the afternoon for running up debts. He was bankrupt and his shop was taken over by a pork butcher by the name of Heigold. The year was 1880.

I wondered about the name and then saw on a census that he was actually from Kupferzell. I see that you have some connections there, too. His name was actually Escher.

I have since seen that he has been entered into the PB database.

As soon as I have been able to make a copy of the report, I will attach it.

Hello Swiss Gill
I would love to see that report.  My g grandfather Geo. Henry Heigold was also involved in another bankruptsy case in 1869 but I don't have the results of that case other than a Mr Parkinson was the debtor.

Hello Carol

September 1880

Here it is:

Mr. William Esher will remember his wedding day. Married in the morning, arrested in the act of rejoicing in the afternoon, and sent to prison in the evening! Was ever fate so unkind? Mr. Esher is – or rather was – a pork butcher at Attercliffe. There he retired from business, or the business retired from him, and a Mr. Heigold became his successor. Mr. Esher contemplated an unostentatious journey to Germany, and would no doubt have carried out his intention had not a creditor barred the way with an unromantic thing called a writ. Mr. Esher promised to pay this creditor, if he could raise the cash on Monday morning. The hour came, but the cash didn’t; neither did Mr. Esher The creditor issued his writ, and the debtor was declared a bankrupt. Mr. Esher, though he could not fulfil his promise with his creditor, was gallant enough to keep his engagement with his lady-love, to whom he was duly married on Tuesday morning. Shortly after the wedding, the party were at a public house in Granville street making merry over the marriage when Banquo’s ghost appeared in the form of Mr. Bedford, jun, who presented a warrant for Mr. Esher’s arrest. He pleaded to be free, and so did the bride, but the messenger was inexorable, and Mr. Esher went to Wakefield the same evening. Was ever honeymoon so cruelly killed? Bridegroom and bankrupt in a day? Married in the morning; in Wakefield at night! Mr. Esher, I repeat will remember his wedding day.

Thank you very much.  It makes good reading as the author had a sense of humour.  To bad it didn't say which Mr. Heigold it was as there were 3 of them at least, Geo. Henry, my g great grandfather, his brother Christian Frederick, and a John Frederick which I believe was another brother.  There was also a Liesette Heigold who married William Ebert whom I believe was possibly a sister.

Carole

I'll have a look at my notes on the Heigolds. Maybe I will be able to find which Heigold.

Hi Gill,  Thanks again for sending that article.  It would be great if it turned out it was my Heigold family.

They were in the news several times as I have a copy of a case where someone stole a piece of beef from the shop of Christian Frederick Heigold.  the poor man was probably starving but ended up spending a month in jail.  This was November 17 1857.

Hello Carol

After checking out which Heigold lived where and Escher's last address, I looked at the London Gazette but no luck. Feeling frustrated, I googled Escher's name and was pointed to FindMyPast. There I saw the first report about him and re-read it. It stated that Escher had sold all his fixtures and shop at CARLTON ROAD, Attercliffe to a Mr. Heigold. This must be Georg Heinrich Heigold who first married Maria Lant. I checked in the database and saw he was living at 203 Carlton Road in 1881.

 :)

Hi Gill
It seems pretty likely that it would have been Georg Heinrich who he had sold his shop to seeing as he lived just up the road.  Thank you for taking the time to look that up.

Hi Carol I have only just joined rootschat and read your post. George Henry Heigold was my ggg grandfather. I have a family tree on ancestry.co.uk if you want to take a look. Georges daughter Elizabeth married George Albert Mills, she gave birth to my g grandma Florence and Florence gave birth to my granddad Cyril Emmerson. Cyril had two children my uncle Cyril and my mum Catherine. I hope this has been of some interest to you.  Cathy

Hello Cathy
George Henry Heigold was my g g grandfather.  His daughter Fanny from his first marriage was my g grandmother.
I have George Albert Mills married to GHs daughter Florence and Elizabeth married to John Fretwell.   I have a copy of the Parish register showing both their marriages.
I have Florence Emmeline Mills marrying a man named Harry Nixon but unfortunately I don't have a source for that marriage.
I don't have an subscription to Ancestry so can't check out your tree.
Hopefully we can figure this out as it sounds like we are related although distantly.
