Title: Henry John Hale
Post by: Crwys on Wednesday 08 April 15 09:36 BST (UK)
I am currently attempting to do a 'tree' for a friend & am solidly stuck!
The fella I'm stuck with was a Henry John Hale. It is his line that I can't trace. The family seem to think there was a link to Devon but I can't find one. I have his marriage certificate which has him born 1886/married 13/4/1910 in Pontypridd aged 24yrs. to a Florence Summers. His trade was a Butcher at this time & I believe he & Florence emigrated to Canada for a while. They had daughters Viola Evelyn b. 1910 Aberfan, Lena Sylvia b. 1911 Aberfan & Margaret Emily b. 1920, Gorseinon, Swansea. His father was a Henry Hale who was an Innkeeper but deceased by 1910. There aren't that many Henry John Hales around in England & Wales who were born in 1886 but I can't find one with a father Henry - Innkeeper. If anyone can help me trace this line I would be very grateful; any little bits of info gratefully received. Thank you.

Have you discounted this Henry John:
Births Dec 1887
Hale  Henry John  Cardiff  11a 333 (abt. 12 mls. from Pontypridd)
Mmm there's a Henry J Hale marrying in Cardiff 1913 so probably not him.
Inconvenient not being on the 1911 census. As his daughter is with her Grandparents I assume this is the time they were in Canada.
I'm always a bit suspicious when a person doesn't seem to appear anywhere so it's possible he's made up a father's name.

I think the Cardiff Henry John Hale's father was a 'William' in the 1891 census. Thanks for trying.

Have you found Henry in 1911,  I see the daughter is with grandparents.

There is also a male birth in 1925 Swansea RD surname Hale mmn Summers.  :-\

There is a Florence Hale born 5 January 1890 coming from Montreal and landing Liverpool in October 1959 - address 19 Penybryn Road, Gorseinon, Swansea - a retired SRN - country of last permanent residence Wales

She went out there in July 1959 but no address in Canada

Thank you for that information re Florence. I didn't know there was a son or that she was a Nurse. Will have a look at that.

It looks to me as though he was born Henry John CROSS- Mar 1885   St. Thomas 5b 56-son of Henry CROSS and Emily Scanes? HALE nee OTTON-widow of a Thomas Bracher HALE.

Henry CROSS and wife Emily S in 1901-Piece2029 / 16/ 23. Henry is listed as a retired Inn Keeper.

Well done Maureen it's definitely him. The original 1911 census is very interesting.
RG14; Piece: 32440; Schedule Number: 220
Why has he changed his name is the next question?
This is Maureen's 1891 info:
Littleham Devon
Henry Cross  60
Emily S Cross  44
Henry J Cross  6 son b. Topsham Devon
Frederick G Cross  3 son
Emily Hale  20 step/dau.
William Hale  16 stepson
They married in 1881 but she is listed as Emily Scanes Hall.
Emily's 1st. husband Thomas Bracher Hale died aged 29 in 1875. He was a bank clerk & his effects under £800 were left to his widow Emily Scanes Hale.
Emily died 1912.

1871 mistranscribed as Hall:

 :) :) Thanks,jim.

Don't have the info up at the moment but I think A*try have him as Henry CROP in 1901. He's a butcher's assistant.

Why,indeed, did he start using HALE as his surname.?????

Found Emily on earlier censuses but mistranscribed as Atton.
Yes the name change is a mystery.
I can't see a Henry Cross death that fits but there is a Henry J Hale died 1945 aged 60. Registered in W. Glamorgan.
