Title: TESTER-GOLDSMITH Marriage 1864 - Reg District of Hailsham
Post by: Alex Walker on Wednesday 08 April 15 15:00 BST (UK)
Hi All

Incomer from the Kent Board here.  I wonder if anyone would have access to PR for possibly Chiddingly for the above marriage.  Ansley (Ainsley) Tester m John Goldsmith 1st Q 1864.  He was a widower but I need to find her Father's name if possible.  There are two Ansley Tester threads I could follow with relatively similar details (dob etc) and I could do with nailing the right one.

Thanks in advance!
Alex

Hi Alex,  I can see your dilemma.

Ansley seems consistent in saying born in Mayfield doesn't she?  I can see her in 1851 - 1871 and 1881.

Can't however see any Tester Baptisms in Mayfield in the right time frame  ???

1851 has her as the step daughter of William Henley...his wife Henrietta born Waldron c1806.  This would imply that Henrietta had previously been married to a Tester.  Maybe someone could check the SMI for a marriage?  please (my disc has ceased to function)

Quick look, can't find anything meaningful in 1841 - there is however a Henrietta TESTER baptised in Waldron 30/08/ 1812, parents Samuel and Mary.  Possibility that Ansley was illegitimate ?

I think I would want a copy of the marriage cert. to John Goldsmith.

Suey

Many thanks CB53.

Looks like the marriage to William Sands was short, can't see any Sands baptisms in Framfield prior to 1838 :-\

I think I found them in 1841 in Mayfield :

William HENDEY 30 Ag lab
Henny HENDEY 35
Caroline HENDEY 7
Tilden       "  5
Sally         "  3
Jane         "  3 mos
Annesly TESTER 15
William SANDS 12
July SANDS 9

The last three are missing from the transcript.

Well done!  All children fit with the two marriages so it's looking likely that Annesly was born out of wedlock, would you agree?

Yes , I agree. It does seem likely. The 1864 marriage certificate may help , although there's always the possibility of an 'invented' father.

I agree,  I see three options, either blank, completely fictitious father or "William" Tester.

Hi All

Thank you for your replies, I'm very grateful.

My dilemma is that I believed (I haven't got the MC and can't remember where this came from) that she was also a widow when she married John Goldsmith.  I had thought that her maiden name was Newnham.  I thought she was born Ansley Newnham to Robert and Philadelphia Newnham and married Edward Tester.  I'm going to go back over the research I did a while ago from scratch and work out why I thought she was married to Edward Tester.

John Goldsmith was my G3 Grandfather, but Ansley was not my G3 grandmother, his first wife Ruth Greenfield was.

I'll keep digging unless anyone can help with this information.  I can always get the MC but I was hoping there were PR that might help!

Cheers

Alex

In addition Ansley Tester is living with her father Robert Newnham in 1871, so looks like she definitely isn't the one you want!

Hi

Yes I think the latter point is the one where I knew I had gone wrong!  I'll clear the decks and start again.  This is some very old research from a few years ago when I was greener, so I will begin afresh!

Thanks for everyone's help

Alex

Thanks to CB53 & Suey - I really now need the certificate or PR to see whether she was a widow or not.  If not then I think you may have found her for me!

Cheers
