Title: Patching Marriage - BUTCHER
Post by: acher1 on Thursday 07 July 05 05:43 BST (UK)
:)  Hello and Greetings from Australia!
Is someone able to look up Marriages in Patching for BENJAMIN BUTCHER (a Coachman), in approx. 1836?
I've been trying to piece together my husband's ancestry.  His gr.grandfather WILLIAM BUTCHER was born approx. 1843 in Patching (28yrs old in 1871 census, MEOT., 36yrs old in 1881 census, Tower Hamlets).  When he first married 11 Feb 1871 to HANNAH LITTLE at St.Anne Limehouse parish church, MDX, he stated his father was BENJAMIN BUTCHER (Coachman).
I have located baptism entries, Patching, for a WILLIAM BUTCHER 26 Mar 1843, and also BENJAMIN BUTCHER 27 Jan 1839.  Their parents were BENJAMIN and CATHERINE BUTCHER (Benjamin's occ. Groom).
I sent away for the birth cert. of a WILLIAM BUTCHER (thinking I had the 'right' one) only to find this particular 'WILLIAM' was born 29 Jan 1843, Patching - his F: BENJAMIN BUTCHER (Groom), and M: CAROLINE (late HERRINGTON).
So now I don't know which WILLIAM BUTCHER is ours!
I thought if I could locate father BENJAMIN's marriage (perhaps in Patching) it would help.
If anyone can assist me in sorting out my problem, I'd be most grateful.
                                                                          Carol

Hi Carol,

There are only these two marriages in the name of Benjamin Butcher on the Sussex Marriage Index for the right dates,

Brighton, East Sussex,  Date: 31 Aug 1834:
 Benjamin BUTCHER, bach
 Katherine YARRANTON, sp botp  (B)

Burpham, West Sussex,  Date:  6 Jun 1835:
 Benjamin BUTCHER
 Elizabeth STANDEN, botp

The first entry looks to me to be the Benjamin & Katherine, parents of William & Benjamin.
Not much for you to go on here & the SMI only goes up to 1837 ish.  Have you tried FreeBMD?

Jane

You really need census look ups for 1841 and 1851 as then you might find him with his parents.     Having said that I am not sure whether the 1851 has been indexed for the Patching area - I certainly have not got it but womone may have.  The 1841 is not indexed on the whole.
I think I have found the family in 1861  Piece 311 Folio 6 p27 % Manchester Road Poplar Middlesex (part of London)
Benjamin Butcher 47 lab
Catherine 50
Priscilla 24 serv
Benjamin 22 Engine Driver
William 18 serv
Frederick Brooker lodger 30 blacksmith
All born Sussex but it does not give a town.
By 1871 the younger Bejamin is still in Poplar with a wife Elizabeth30 and daughter Elizabeth 3.  This time his place of birth is Patcham.
in 1871 as you know William is also in London in Mile End Rd.  He is a carman with a wife Hannah but just Sussex as birth place again.
Does any of this sound familiar or am I chasing red herrings?
Andrea

:D Thank you Jane & Andrea for your replies, which were very helpful.
I was given the Patching 1841 census record (HO107/1096/Sch 6/pages 5 & 6, Patching Street, Patching) of the only Butcher family appearing in Patching then.  This was BUTCHER, James (60) Wheelwright; Martha (70); Catherine (30); Priscilla (4); Benjamin (2).  All born in county of Sussex.
As you said Jane, this would fit in with the first entry you found.
And also Andrea, with the 1861 census record you found in Poplar.
It seems that this could be our 'WILLIAM', but I will try to locate them in 1851 census.  I have entries from Patching Parish Reg. Burials, which shows JAMES BUTCHER (80) buried 21 Dec 1856; and MARTHA BUTCHER (84) buried 20 Mar 1852.
Andrea, do you have the Patching 1861 census.  If so, could you have a look for JAMES BUTCHER b. 1776? (wheelwright) and wife MARTHA BUTCHER b.1768?
I'll also have a look at Free BMDs.
  Many thanks again!

No sign of them in 1861 in Sussex.

Thanks Andrea for looking.  But I'm not thinking real clearly, am I?
If JAMES died 1856 and MARTHA in 1852, they're not going to be in the 1861 census!!   :-[
Sorry.
