Title: PIPE, KERRY of Brundish Suffolk
Post by: Tanya Marie on Wednesday 15 April 15 19:55 BST (UK)
I am new to this.  I am interested in the above surnames.  My Great Jan a,  Millie Thorpe, ne Pipe, had a son with Walter Kerry - my Grandad Cecil Pipe, known as John.  Apparently Walter was murdered in Canada after leaving England In 1926.  Does anyone have any info?

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

It would appear that Millie Pipe's birth record has her name as Millie Victoria Pipe.

This could be Millie on the 1901 -

George Pipe   28 b. Brundish, Suffolk, Stockman in Farm
Ellen Pipe   24 b. Brockford, Suffolk
Victoria Pipe   9/12 b. Brundish, Suffolk

RG13 Piece 1767 Folio 122 Page 10, Laxfield Lane, Wilby, Sufflok.

There's a birth of a Walter Kerry -

Walter Kerry
q3 1902, Hoxne,   Suffolk
Vol 4a Page 993

The Registration District for this birth is the same as that of Millie Victoria Pipe. so a possibility.

Is this the type of information you are looking for? If you are looking for Canadian records then it would be advisable to post a request on the Canadian board.

The only Pipe/Thorpe marriage I can see gives the brides name as Mildred

Marriages Mar 1926

Pipe    Mildred V    Thorpe    Plomesgate    4a   1486
Thorpe    Harry G    Pipe    Plomesgate    4a   1486

is this them?

There was a Cecil W G Pipe born in Suffolk in 1920 - is this your grandad? There is no father's name given on the certification (according to options on freeBMD), suggesting that a.he was illegitimate, and b.that the father didn't go to the registrars to register him.

Walter Kerry, address Framlingham, a 36 year old farmer, sailed 3rd class from Southampton to Halifax, Canada, on 25 March 1926, on the Ascania. He was travelling alone and intending to settle in Canada.

If this is him it's a useful record as we now have an idea of date of birth.

Hello JJ

Yes my Grandad was Cecil b 1920.  He died aged 57.  My Great Nana had my Grandad illegitimately.  She marriedsomeone Thorpe.  They lived at Coddenham.  He was buried there.
Sounds like you have found my Great Grandad Walter.  The date of birth
is approx 1889 and the ship's details sound accurate.  I found Walter's parents graves in Brundish the other day - Walter and Delia.  There is also a Hilda Kerry d 1914 aged only 5.

Hilda Kerry was the daughter of Clement Wightman Kerry and Emily Kerry.

Clement (b.1870) and Walter Kerry Snr (b.1862, and the father of Walter Kerry b.1889) are brothers. Therefore it would appear that Hilda was buried with her uncle and aunt.

Yes that would be the correct Emily Kerry. She was 72 when she died in 1945. Clement W's wife was born in c.1872, so it all ties in well.

Gertrude Kerry/Soanes was born q4 1910, Hartismere, Suffolk

I found the info re Walter Kerry on Ancestry.

I had a look at the newspapers as if the story of his being murdered is true, I thought it might be reported in his family's local paper even though he wasn't living there any more, but there was nothing in the papers.

Tanya Marie, do you have access to any of the sites such as ancestry? And (as you say you're new to this) have you got to grips yet with the free sites like family search, and freeBMD? If not, we can point you to how to get more info from these too.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

this is where the marriage and birth registration information above was found.

https://familysearch.org/

if you go further back, this may come in useful - it also has a lot of info re American data; but some of the info on here has to be treated with a pinch of salt, take it as a suggestion rather than gospel truth!

If you decide to get any certificates, this is the site for that:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

£9.25 per certificate (if you purchase certs through other sites they can charge you up to £20 or more at a time), and you need information such as year, quarter, page no, etc which you get (for free) from the freeBMD site.

You may not be at the stage of getting any certificates yet but if you do this hobby for any length of time you may find that you start to build a collection of them!

Hi, Walter was the bother of my grandma Phoebe from Brundish. I remember her taking us, when we were children, to visit Millie, who lived nearby on Church Lane.

Also Walters mother Delia was called Aldous before marriage. Not sure if you'll see this as your post is from quite a while ago.
