Hi Everyone
I'm needing some help off some of my friends on here.
I'm currently working on my fathers side of the tree and drawing some serious blanks.
I've got James Strachan (Born 1804 in Forres, Moray) married to Margaret Harris (b.1809-1875)
His father was James Strachan who married Margaret Smith (b1770 - d1867). in Rafford, Forres, Scotland
Nov 29 1797. I've been unable to establish anything else about James. No birth dates, no death dates and I have also been unable to establish the younger James death date.
Can anyone give me some help. I've been on Scotlands People and also Familysearch and ancestry but cant find anything to help me.

Have you tried Moray Council's free Libindx site? It allows you to search for folk from the area.

The younger James died sometime between 1830 and 1834 in Hamilton, Glasgow. His son Peter Strachan was born 17th May 1830 in Hamilton (indexed as Strachine in the 1841 Census) and James was not described as "deceased" then. His widow Margaret Martin married another Journeyman Shoemaker named Robert Martin. Their marriage was proclaimed in Hamilton on 15th December 1834. Hope this helps. Regards, Alastair MacDonald

His baptism is on Scotlands People, the only one that comes up with name, 1804 date and Moray county search.
19-4-1804 James Strachan at Forres parents James Strachan and Margaret Smith.
You will need to spend credits to see the full page.

Thank you both so much for this information. I don't have an issue buying credits for Scotland's people - I'm just not very good at searching it and end up wasting a lot of time and money chasing the wrong leads.
The information you have given is brilliant - There is stil the mystery of James death between 1830 - 1834 - any ideas how I can dig up some info on this?
Also there's mention of his grand parents james strachan and margaret smith in Forres Moray - Can anyone help me trace this line any further back, or at least point me in a direction?
Thanks again everyone

He can't be if his widow married again in 1834/5.

It would not be the first time a "widow" married, while her first husband was still living. I have a great aunt who moved away from her home village, leaving hubby behind, only to marry again, several years before he died. :o Just a thought!

Hello Paul,
I just came across this message trail after looking on RootsChat on a whim. I see it's been about two years since you posted originally, and maybe you have already progressed beyond this. But here goes:
My 3G-grandfather was James S. Strachan (b. 16 Feb 1804 in Forres, Moray, Scotland). I am not sure if this is the same James Strachan you are researching, but mine was married to Emilia Clark (b. 25 Dec 1807 in Scotland) in Forres on 22 Jun 1832. They had a son, James Clark Strachan, in Forres in about 1833 (my 2G-grandfather), and emigrated to Orange County, New York State in the US in 1836/37 via Nova Scotia where they had a second son, John Strachan, in 1836. They had three more sons (William Grant, Robert Hardy and Lewis A.) by 1845.
James S. Strachan (Americanized to Strahan) lived in Newburgh, Orange, NY, USA from 1855 until his death at age 73 on 8 Mar 1877.
I've traced his ancestors ("tentatively" - i.e., I have found evidence on ScotlandsPeople and Ancestry but don't have a lot of corroboration yet) as follows:
James Strachan (b. Jan 1780 in Marykirk, Kincardineshire; d. aft. 1861) m. Margaret Smith (b. abt. 1786 in Marykirk, Kincardineshire).
James was son of John Strachan (b. bef. 1760) and Margaret Clark (b. bef. 1760).
That's as far as I have been able to take it so far. I hope this helps you. If any of this relates to your line, and/or if you have anything to share, I'd appreciate it.
Regards,
Mike
