My mom and my aunt were born in Malleny Mills, Balerno per their birth cert. Last year while in Balerno I enquired about Malleny Mills and at first the person didn't know what I was talking about but then said "The mills?? They were torn down years ago." Then last night playing on my tablet while watching TV I came across this.

Have you looked at 44 Harlaw Road on Google Earth? The building looks old enough to date from the time of the Balerno paper mills.

the alternative name is Malleny Mills so I figure this must be the place. Just wanted some confirmation. Thanks for nfo. :) Do you know if all the mills are gone?

The NGR NT 17184 65632 is an map reference for the location of Malleny Mills as recorded in the RCAHMS database. If you plug that into a proper map (not a road atlas) it will show you exactly what is or was there.

If you move it to left and right it toggles between the onld map and a modern satellite view. In the old map, Malleny Mills seems to have consisted of two buildings, a long narrow one and a T-shaped one with a very large top and a very small stem. The long narrow building is definitely not there now, and I don't think the T-shaped one is, though it could be part of the cluster of buildings now on the site.
Just go there and take a look. The No 44 bus is your friend, but you'll still have to walk a kilometre or so from the end of the bus route. If there are any old-looking stone buildings, they would probably be part of the mill, but if all the buildings are modern, it is likely that the mill has been demolished and replaced.

Hi the old mill house in Harlaw Road is called the Glen I can see from the records. Would that be what Harlaw Road was originally called The Glen or just the house. And can I ask was there a saw mill in that house a long time ago or in the area that a carpenter might have worked in? I know I’m asking a question no one might know just putting it out there.

The mills are gone they were wasteland for much of the 80s that I remember of and housing estate was built on top of them a long time ago in the 90s. There is a house in that plot area though that still exists and was turned into 2 flats internally, 41 Bavelaw Road (https://www.google.com/maps/@55.8831279,-3.3387197,3a,75y,113.6h,90.16t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sBp1wYFVYOv_E__CGBYqaXQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) think it was used by a concierge/man that looked after the mill when it was active in the 1800s. The old mill house the glen is further away 10 mins walk from the mill plot at the top of Harlaw Road last house top of st before you hit the pentlands.
