Title: Annie LANE b1872
Post by: Greaves on Tuesday 21 April 15 17:04 BST (UK)
Hi

I'm looking for information on Annie LANE, who was born Q3 1872 in Lambeth. Her father was John LANE, a railway engine driver, and her mother Mary Gettliffe.

In 1881, Annie, aged 8, is living with her parents at Sterndale Road in Battersea. Similarly, in 1891, aged 18, she is living with her parents at Ascots Street in Battersea, working in a spice/sauce factory. I then lose track of her.

I originally thought that she married Henry John Bickerstaff in Q3 1892 in Lambeth and then following his death re-married Charles Marshall John Humphrys in Q2 1896 in Richmond. I have now changed my mind, as the register for the Bickerstaff marriage, shows his age to be 75 and her age to be 37. It also describes her father as John Lane (deceased). Ignoring the enormous gap in ages, there are two other problems: namely in 1892 she would have been 19 not 37, and her father John was not deceased. Similarly, the marriage to Humphrys, which I think is the same Annie, again describes her father as deceased. Her father, John died in 1903, so was very much alive at the time of both these weddings.

So, what happened to Annie after 1891? Did she marry? And where and when did she die?

All help and insights gratefully received.

Hi

Have you looked at the marriage to Frederick Charles Chambers in October 1893?  Father of Annie is John Lane and her age fits. Annie and Frederick are in Battersea in the 1901 census.

No - that is very interesting. I see her father is described as a labourer, whereas on the 1891 census he was a railway engine driver. Possible, but a definite drop in status. On the other hand, one of the witnesses is Harry Lane, the name of one of Annie's brothers. So very possible.

Yes I noticed that.  However, in 1901 no occupation is recorded for John.  Maybe he was no longer fit to be an engine driver by the time of the marriage and was working as a labourer?

Have you looked at the later censuses for Annie Chambers?

Yes,  found them in 1911. Interestingly, both the 1901 and 1911 addresses are streets where family members have lived in the past, which whilst not conclusive is encouraging and leads one to believe that one is on the right track.

I think that Frederick might have died in 1915 (Chambers Frederick C 43 Q1 1915 Wandsworth 1d 733). If this is his death, it raises the question of what happened to Annie. Did she re-marry?

Looks like she married again to Joseph BARNARD Sept Qtr 1916.

Just an example from the 1932 Electoral Register on A*try:
74 Linford St
 BARNARD,Annie
CHAMBERS,William John
COLE,Edwin Harris
COLE,Mabel Frances

Fantastic - this looks really promising. I have had a quick look without success so far for a death, but it should now be possible.

Possible for Annie Q1 1958 Wandsworth 5d 931.

Hello again

I wondered whether you know who registered the deaths of Annie's parents? Also, have you looked at  marriages for her siblings to see whether she might have been a witness after her marriage(s).

I think her younger sister was still at home with her parents in 1901.

This would be a good way of further crosschecking you have the correct Annie.

I have managed to confirm that this is the correct Annie, as I have a copy of her brother's marriage certificate. Annie was a witness at her brother Harry's wedding in 1891, just as he was to her marriage in 1893. So both their signatures are on both certificates. And whilst I am no graphologist, both are identical to the naked eye.

Interestingly their father John Lane is still an engine driver at Harry's wedding in 1891, but has been demoted to labourer by her wedding in 1893.

That is very useful!

Any idea what happened to her younger sister Elizabeth?

Yes, Eliza Norah married Roger Wood in 1908 in Wandsworth. The witnesses were my Great Great Grandfather John Rowe Eveleigh and another Eveleigh. The Lanes and the Eveleighs were very connected families, living alongside each other and both working for the railway. There were two marriages between the families: John Rowe Eveleigh marrying Mary Lane and Harry Lane marrying Emma Amelia Eveleigh. Plus John Thomas Lane married Louisa Rowe, an Eveleigh cousin.
