I know my great grandfather was to do with watermen and lightermen.
I have no idea if im using this site correctly :-\ lol but iv only just started researching my family tree.
Thanks in advance for any help and I would love to hear from you.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
The 1911 English census has 89 entries for that surname throughout England so we need more info from you as to exactly which branch you are researching
Any born between 1901-1911 will be found on the 1911 census. We are not allowed to post any details from that census because of copyright issues so you would need to look them up yourself on one of the subscription sites
Names/birthyears/ birthplaces
Please do not post any info about anybody who is or could still be alive

FreeBMD is a good free easy to use site. You can often find births deaths and marriages which fit in with what you know about the family which might help your research along a bit. Frrebmd is just an index though and you would need to buy the appropriate certificate to get full details.
Keep in mind that with an unusual surname you will always need to search for misspellings and misinterpretations. So for Penniall you might like to search for pen*l or pen*a*l (just a couple of examples and there will be other variations I'm sure).
You can give names of anyone who is no longer living if you would like some help, though it is much more fun to do it yourself.
Also keep in mind that the pay sites like Ancestry and FindMyPast give you a two week free trial, so if you take that up when you have plenty of free time, you might find you can make good progress. But remember to cancel before the trial ends or they will charge your credit card for an annual subscription. Both have occasional free access weekends which are worth looking out for.

Hi Joliegh,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Have a browse too on the "Occupation Interests" board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/occupations/
There are several topics about canal and riverboat people there.
In this topic, for instance,
Topic: Watermen and lighter-men Apprenticeships Bindings Look up Please?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=232899.msg2109647#msg2109647
there is a mention of a John Pennial in 1790
Good luck,
Bob

-
hi again, thanks for the info.
Elsie Williams was most definantely my great grandmother i still remember visiting her when i was little.
im going to look on the 1911 census as suggested and see if my hunch is correct that Charles Joseph Penniall's father was Ernest Penniall
-
KGARRAD ---- yes he was a twin but im led to believe his brother died at birth.

looks like another set of twins together in census aged 29
I previously posted the statement below
parents look to be Joseph John Penniall( b 1881 Greenwich )and Florence Alice Pritchard who married St Olave mar qtr 1903.....
I might be wrong - tell me what you find on 1911 census
-
KGARRAD ---- yes he was a twin but im led to believe his brother died at birth.
Using FreeBMD again:
Deaths, December qtr 1933
Lambeth district vol 1d, page 157
Penniall, John age 0
So, although he didn't die at birth (that would be a stillbirth, and recorded on a different register), he died shortly afterwards.

ah I see, I also noticed that GARSTONITE posted Florence Alice Prichard and josph John Penniall were married in 1903 and had Charles in 1903 so she was probably pregnant before they were married :?

Hi
Baptism St Paul Deptford16 August 1903 born 24 July 1903 Charles Joseph Pennaill Parents Joseph John and Florence Alice Occupation metal sorter.
Marriage Joseph John Penniall 21 and Florence Alice Pritchard 19 on 7 Feb 1903 St Anne Bermondsey occupation metal sorter Parents Daniel Penniall, lighterman and George Thomas Pritchard, leather finisher.
Cannot see Joseph John on 1901 census but with this surname you may find a number of transcription "errors" and may have to be creative in searching. 1891 census has been transcribed as Penwell and has family at 56 Thames Street, Greenwich with father Daniel 47, waterman barge and mother Bridget 39 and siblings Phoebe 18, Sarah 16, Henry 7, Elizabeth 5 and Samuel 2.

Have you considered using the library? Many libraries provide free access to ancestry library edition using your library card. Google your local library and it should indicate if this is available in your area.
