Hi All
I am looking for any information on the Furlongs of Richmond St North and Russell Street Mountjoy. I know of the relationship between the Behan (Brendan Behan) and the Furlongs as it is well documented , but can find little on the Furlongs. I do know that Granny Furlong moved over to Birmingham England with her two daughters and shortly after arriving was arrested for bomb making. What I am looking for is anything on Thomas Henry Furlong and his wife Mary Anne O'Connor (granny furlong) and their children. Family say they know at some point there was a connection with Wexford but I cant seem to trace them back from Dublin. John/Jack Furlong married Kathleen Kearney mother of the Behan boys Brendan Behan and Dominic (second marriage to Stephen Behan) . The furlongs can be found in 1901 and 1911 living in mountjoy . My direct descendant is Leo Furlong. Any help appreciated. Thanks :)

Thank you Conahy , I thought he had died before 1939 as this is when his wife took off to live with her son in Birmingham shortly before she was arrested and I have no proof of him travelling with her or him turning up there. His death cert wouldn't say where he was born would it ? The 1911 census pages state he was born in Dublin , but then again so does his wife but then on the 1901 census she states Co Meath (or visa versa) . Trying to get a bit further back but don't seem to be able to get a move on .

Hi Dathai
You hit the nail on the head with this little lot , thanks so much I have never used that site before as its been some time since I picked this up again. The name O'Connor is one that I got from the 1901 census Catherine O'Connor mother in law widow, wondering now if it was Thomas that was married before (?) , but that's brilliant as I can see Thomas's parents names there. Wondering about the end column in the marriage register saying Disp , could this mean they were cousins ? I also now have new addresses to look at. Im ever so grateful to you !

These records are brilliant , thank you so much ! ;D
-
as usual ages at death are unreliable depending who the informant was the same applies for ages on the census.
So if Mary Annes mother remarried to Rodger Connor in 1864 it is most likely that Mary Anne and Thomas Furlong were in their forties in 1901 so born before Catholic civil registration began in 1864.
The death for Thomas Furlong that Conahy posted earlier for 1929 is buried in Glasnevin you can search the index here and get a full readout for 10euro listing all burials in that plot
http://www.glasnevintrust.ie/genealogy/results/index.xml
There is also a burial showing in 1902 for a Catherine Connor age 64 ? when entering Russell Street in address box
-
given that Thomas Furlong and Mary Anne Reilly married 25th April 1883 they would have to be at least 20 yrs old or possibly younger or older however that pushes their births back to about 1863 or earlier.
noticed a few Furlong's as sponsors on baptisms possibly siblings of Thomas they were Maria and Emily.
Emily Furlong not a very common name on Irish Genealogy
There is a burial recorded in Glasnevin 1892 for a 61 yr old Emily Furlong she is not registered on the civil index.
it could even be his mother.
edit later
entered Buckingham Street into address box for Emily's burial and it still registers.
-
Its not a great name , Thomas Henry Furlong also named one of his daughters after his mother , its a very unusual name for Ireland . I think your right though about the buried Emily I think it has to be his Mother , I have been trying to trace his parents on the 1901 census but looks like they had departed by then .
-
I found Albert and Leo on the prison register 1916 and 1923 at 32 Gt Charles St
I entered Great Charle Street address on the Glasnevin index for the death of Thomas Furlong 1929 and it registers.
Leo married Christina Brennan in Belfast ?
-
Yes Dathai he did marry Christina Brennan. I had thought of looking on ancestry for any other info but have been away for a few days so didn't get round to it . Wow wonder what they did or if it was connected to the IRA as their brother John/Jack Furlong was also involved and was indeed friends with Michael Collins. Peadar Kearney was John/Jack Furlongs brother in law when he was married to Kathleen Kearney, the marriage lasted 3 years and they had two sons but he died from flu during the epidemic of 1918. She later married Stephen Behan, their sons to become Brenan Behan and Dominic Behan.
Did you find this out from ancestry site ?
-
I just found it on family search , reason Fraudlent Converstion of £20 , there seem to be a lot of Furlongs there !
-
Hello Carol!
I am also a direct Descendant of Leo Aloysius Furlong. He was my Grandad. I don't think I have got any further back than you have so far. However i have found the process fascinating. You have probably seen these two books but if not then they do have some interesting references in them to the family.
Mother of all the Behans, by Brian Behan.
Brendan Behan A life, by Michael o Sullivan.
The second one the text is searchable on google.
I would be interested to know how you are related to Leo.
All The best

Hi Carol and all
I have just started tracing my bloodline as I was adopted in 1972.
My great great grandfather was Thomas Henry Furlong!
I am fascinated to be reading all this information you all have. Would you be happy to share any more with me please?
Many kind thanks
Emma (born Melissa Jane Furlong)
-
Hi Emma,
Good to hear from another family member!
Thomas Henry Furlong born 6 th June 1862 was my great grandad and had I believe 7 children with
Mary Anne Reilly. Do you know which one of their children you are descended from? I have only researched my direct line but I may be able to help you with some general information
Kind regards
Mark Furlong
-
Hi Mark
Thank you so much for getting back to me! It is all very exciting.
My G Grandfather was Patrick Joseph-J Furlong (1891–1936) his son was my Grandfather Edmund T Furlong and his daughter is my birth mother Jennifer Ann formerly Furlong.
You and Carol are descended from Leo?
I am having trouble finding Thomas Henry's birth record as we had a different birth year, but still can't locate it using your given date. Any clues please? Do you have an Ancestry Tree?
Also were Thomas Furlong's parents Thos Furlong and Emily Dunn?
Look forward to swapping findings and details!
Thank you
Emma

Hello, due to recently doing my DNA and trying to trace my father it seems I am also connected to the furlongs
I was hidden via a name change and birthdate change in 1977
i was born in 1974
Due to my mother's own insecurities
Wondering if any one can help with any information ?

This is a long thread with a lot of links so a lot to wade through
Is this the family?
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Mountjoy/Richmond_St__North/15970/
Eileen appears to be this birth without a first name, number 363

Have you searched https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp for Marriages ?
Or change to Births etc...
this gets Marriages to 1899 but one can change it.....or change Surname

When and where did Eileen and James marry?
There are restrictions on more recent records for data protection.
-
Is it possible Eileen was priviously married
There is a marriage in to Alfred O'Hely in 1922 the bride's father is Thomas and I'm fairly sure his occupation is Cutter, Eileen is noted as a minor which fits with a 1903 birth.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1922/09209/5331525.pdf
It looks like that Alfred didn't die until 1953.

It looks like they married in Birmingham 1947 and had son Roger gunning in 1947 thank you

We're not going to find anything on them in Ireland so, think the best thing you can do is get Roger's birth cert and/or his parents marriage cert.
The marriage cert will confirm Eileen's father's name and I'd expect his occupation.
-
They should both arrive next week, are you on ancestry ?
-
Ancestry, no, I'm not.
