Title: Ohio Deaths 1876-1880 (Akron, Summit County)
Post by: Michael ONeil on Thursday 30 April 15 09:00 BST (UK)
Anyone know if these exist and/or could check the following for me?

Death of a William O'Neil, b1872 Brooklyn, possibly died Akron (Summit) 1876-1880.
Father: James O'Neil, Mother: Hannah Angela (Ames).

I've got William on the 1875 NY State census at an address in Brooklyn with his parents and brother but he's nowhere in the 1880 census. I know his father was living in NYC in 1876 and in Akron in the 1880 census so maybe the family moved to Akron sometime in between hence the reason for asking.

I'm checking the Brooklyn/Manhattan death records separately but so far no joy - Akron is my only other lead as far as a location is concerned.

Michael, Liverpool, UK.

You can check city directory entries for Akron here:
http://sc.akronlibrary.org/genealogy/city-directories/

Index to the Akron Beacon Journal:

Obituary index to AKB--doesn't go back that far:

Ohio Death Certificates didn't start until 1908

Cheers Genealiza - I’ve tried the directories.

1875-76: no lising.
1877-78: first listing for brother Michael - O’Neil & Dyas.
1878-79: no directory available.
1879-80: O’Neil, James E., salesman, O’Neil & Dyas, bds, Cascade House. Brothers Michael and Patrick F. listed elsewhere.
1880-81: no directory available.
1881-82: Only brothers Michael and Patrick F.

I’ll see if the Akron Beacon Journal throws anything up - looking a bit thin on editions available for the period though.

There are some Ohio death records from the county level here - https://familysearch.org/search/collection/2128172  I didn't see any likely matches.

Do you have death dates/places for his parents?  Any chance William would be buried with them?

Hi shellyesq (again)

Parents:
James E. O’Neil, born 5 Dec 1849 Cashilisky, Ireland, died ????. I have 2 leads - 1885-1890 (either NY or NJ) or 1905-1906 (location unknown). Another story but I lean towards location is NYC. Occupation typically listed as liquor/tea dealer or salesman.
Hannah Angela (Ames) O’Neil, born 1852 NY, died 3 Apr 1902, buried Calvary (I have the details and there’s no husband or William with her). Occupation given on death certificate as nurse (most likely children’s nanny as opposed to in a hospital).

William had a brother:
James E. O’Neil, born 22 Feb 1874, 96 Bergen Street, Brooklyn, died 1915-1916 Canada.

Cheers - Michael.

Some important background:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=702500.0

Is it possible that he might be found under "Ames", given that it appears possible he was born prior to the marriage of his parents, and that his mother had reverted to Ames by 1880? Is it possible, given that his parents' marriage seems to have broken down, that he was sent off to relatives or taken in by neighbours and ended up taking the name of those who raised him?

Do you know when Hannah Angela's parents died, and have you been able to track down their probate records?

Do you have Hannah on the 1900 census, and what does she list for number of children, number living? (May not be accurate under the circumstances, but interesting to know).

If you search  for "O'Neil & Dyas" you can find references/photos of the department store.  Maybe it was the precursor to "O'Neils Department Store" which was taken over by "The May Company" which was bought out by "Macy's".

Wow folks - suggestions coming in thick and fast! I’ll try to answer as many as possible.

James (b1846) was an older brother to Michael O’Neil of O’Neil & Dyas, later O’Neils Department Store. I have loads of biographical info/photos/etc about them so no need to go down that route.

One of the 2 Find a Grave links are mine (James). He was the father of James (b1846), Michael and 7 other children. I’ve linked to the one for Michael that was set up by someone in Akron. I also manage one for Hannah Angela Ames-O’Neil (a family plot of 19 burials - no husband or sons William and James in the plot):

The other post was one I posted last October when I found William in the 1875 NY State Census at an address in Brooklyn. It was the first and only reference I have and I’ve not found any more on William in NYC hence my idea about the Akron link and my post here. I’ve not found any William in the 1880 census either with known family members in NYC or likely neighbours. The fact that the younger James is with his aunts on East 12th Street says to me that if William was still alive he’d be with family too as in addition to the aunts on East 12th Street there was also his grandmother with another aunt who had a boarding house at 84 Madison Street. Good thinking jorose that he might have been born Ames if he’d been born out of wedlock. The 1875 NY State Census listing is as follows by the way and is almost certain 96 Bergen Street, Brooklyn:

James O’Neil, 28, born Ireland, liquor dealer.
Hanna O’Neil, 21, born Ireland, wife.
William O’Neil, 3, born Brooklyn.
James O’Neil, 1yr 3mths, born Brooklyn.

James (b1846) was my GGGrandfather. His son James (b1874 my GGrandfather) was Michael’s nephew as would have been William. The name William doesn’t feature anywhere else in my O’Neil tree except… Michael named his first son (b1885)… William! (Hum Twilight Zone theme tune?).

Hi folks - I've got a lead from jorose's suggestion about him being born Ames, this is from the death indexes and looks promising:

Anes, William, age 2, June 16 1875, 209225, Manhattan

I'm going to ask someone in NYC if they can note the details - I'll keep you posted - thanks for the replies.

Michael.
