Hi all,
I'm doing research on Sidney James Fissenden born 1899 in Gravesend and died Dec quarter 1918 in Gravesend. He was 19 years old when he died and believe he most likely died of illness or injury during WW1, if anyone has any information on him or photos i would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

This is his death - the certificate would give you the cause of death. He doesn't appear on the CWGC site as far as I can see, so that may mean that it wasn't a war related death. It is possible that he died from the Spanish flu that was raging through the country then.
Sidney J Fissenden
Birth: abt 1899
Death registration: Dec 1918
Age : 19
Gravesend Kent
Volume: 2a Page: 1566
Do you have/want information on his family?

It looks as if he was a Merchant Seaman - his medal card is available here

Found a photo - sent you a PM.

Find my Past has a CR10 card for him including a photograph all be it a mugshot. There are some personal details also.
He signed on the P&O vessel KHIVA official number 135533 in Sept 1918
http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/viewimages.php?year=1920&name=KHIVA&page=318&imagesource=CLIP%C2%A0images
A google search should give you a photograph of this vessel.
If he suffered injury or illness whilst at sea which led to his demise, it will be recorded in the ships logbook.

Thanks groom,
I have checked and amended my original post.

Rather sad that he died just before the end of WW1 was declared.

Many thanks seaweed and groom, for your help. I had found his death recorded in 1918 and have already ordered the certificate. I was a little surprised that he is not on the CWGC site although mentioned on the local war memorial; although this is not the first I've come across.
I know his older brother, Reuben, was in the Royal West Kents and also died, I have a photo of him from the local paper and census returns etc.
I am part of a project to publish books on the fallen on the local memorials, it is quite time consuming but very interesting and extremely rewarding.
Thanks again for your help. I was at a bit of a loss with this one.

Hello.
I am also researching the Fissenden family, to which I am related. I have reached a block with Sidney James Fissenden, born 1899 died 1918 like yourself!
I understand from this thread that you found some information regarding the circumstances of his death, and wonder if you would be able to share this with me please?
Many thanks.

Welcome to Rootschat. Hopefully K8T will see this post and get back to you. At the moment The General Register Office are doing on line death certificates for £6 rather than the usual paper ones at £9.50. You could order his death certificate which will give you his cause of death.

Hi Cescablue,
I apologise for not getting back to you sooner but have been away and then unwell.
Just to let you know, just in case you haven't found out that Sidney died of pnuemonia at home at 30 Edwin Street, Gravesend.
He appears in a book we have published on the fallen of Gravesend who appear on the Windmill Hill Memorial. A photo of him appears in the book.
Hope this is of interest.
