Title: Albert Ernest Ede
Post by: edesearch on Wednesday 20 May 15 23:57 BST (UK)
Hi

I was wondering if somebody could help me. I have been trying to track the movements of my great-great-grandfather, Albert Ernest Ede. I am specifically concerned with the events that took place between 1877-1896. He had been living with his mother, Sarah (born Keeble) in Christchurch, New Zealand, however, she married a man by the name of James Upton in 1877 after the death of her first husband (John Ede) and soon their after moved to Australia between the years of 1881-1885. I know Albert married a woman in New Zealand in 1896, but what I want to know is, did Albert originally move to Australia with his mother and stepfather or did he stay in New Zealand? He was born in 1874 so he would have been too young to stay in New Zealand by himself.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Kind Regards
Edesearch

There is a Sarah UPTON arriving in Sydney from Wellington in 1883 with what might be her children, no ages are given except for the infant.

Thanks Debra

The names of the children match. Are there any census record after their arrival?

Sorry, we made a bonfire with our census records  :'(

They did keep the 1891 collector's books but they only name the head of the household and total number of people in the house.

That’s a shame

Would it be possible to find out when Albert returned to New Zealand?

thanks :)

The only indexed departures from NSW are 1898-1911 and most of the passengers are just Mr., Mrs. etc.  Some incoming to NZ are on FamilySearch, I can see a few which might be of interest, though the lists are generally very sparse on details for travel between Aus and NZ.  Just remember that we were all 'British' back then, it doesn't mean they were born in Britain.

Children Burtin & Ethel Annie with Agnes - but did he marry twice?

The one who died in 1913 had a son named Alick and wife Lily.

?2nd marriage:
1902/630
Lily Bloxham
Albert Ernest Ede

1902/12678
Ede Alexander Ernest Guy
[mother] Lilly
[father] Albert Ernest

Article about his death stated his mother died in an asylum and he had a brother in an asylum in Sydney.

From Papers Past - Auckland Star, Volume XLIV, Issue 305, 23 December 1913, Page 5

Very sad  :(

The link that Dundee posted earlier has a Mr A Ede travelling from Sydney to Auckland in 1896 in steerage aboard Waihora and also in 1893.

Could be your man.

Article about his death stated his mother died in an asylum and he had a brother in an asylum in Sydney.

This brother might be George Henry, tho he is not listed on the shipping record. He was born with the other older EDE children in Malling, Kent (1866) and died in Apr 1919 in Ryde NSW (reg 11410), burial Rookwood.

When/where did Sally/Sarah die? She is definitely neither of the Sarah UPTONs who died in 1880 & 1888.

From my understanding Sarah/Sally remarried after the death of James to a man called Thomas Martin. I believe she died in Enfield, New South Wales in 1899.
