Title: Samuel Bowden married to Emma Nowell
Post by: Kathy Bradshaw on Monday 25 May 15 12:26 BST (UK)
Firstly I would like to thank everyone who has helped me to establish which line of Bowdens I am looking for.  I now need to find Samuels father. Samuel was born 1847 and married Emma Nowell in 1864 Stockport I know they had one daughter Isabella but did they have more, I seem to remember my mother saying her favourite auntie was called Jenny ( and did Samuel have any brothers and sisters ) thanks kathy b

An online tree has this marriage

Marriages Dec 1881
BINNEY    Eliza        Gainsbro'
Bowden    Benjamin        Gainsbro'

7a   1364

Have you got them in the 1891 census to see where she came from?

Sorry Cath, I see that is the same marriage.

Benjamin and Eliza did in fact have 9 children:

Sarah Elizabeth b.Dec.qtr. 1882 Gainsborough, d.1902 Sculcoates
Lilian b.Mar.qtr.1885 Gainsborough, d.1893 Sculcoates
Isabella b.Dec.1887 Barrow in Furness
Benjamin b.Jun.1890, d.1894 Sculcoates
Robert b.Sept.qtr.1892 Sculcoates
Alice b.Sept.1895 Sculcoates
John b.Mar.1898 Sculcoates
George b.Jun.1901 Sculcoates
Doris b.Jun.qtr.1905 Sculcoates

Isabella Bowden married a William Edge (1886-1952) 24/10/1910 Hull and they had 5 children between 1911 and 1922 in Sculcoates.

She died as Isabella Edge on 11/3/1977 in Hull.

So, did William and Isabella part and she went on to have 2 further children with said Frank Taylor??

I can only see a birth for a Dorothy Taylor mmn Bowden 1923 Glossop (year after her last child with William) so don't know if that is the Dorothy you mention - cannot see a birth for an Edith with these surnames.

As Isabella died as an Edge clearly she was never married to a Taylor.

Are these 2 Isabella's definitely the same person?

This might be a better fit
There is a Frank Taylor and Isabella Bowden marriage March 1907 in Glossop
There is also a birth reg for Edith Taylor Dec 1908 again in Glossop.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk.

You say that "William Taylor's father was a blacksmith, Marple Bridge"
Glossop was a sub registration district for Marple Bridge.

If you have access to Ancestry have a look at the 1911 census for William and Isabella.
I can't print it because of transcription rules :(

If the 1907 marriage is the correct one then according to the 1901 census Isabella's parents were Samuel and Emma Bowden.
Isabella was born 1883 in Ludworth Derbyshire.

Is it possible that you have been following the wrong Isabella ?

That certainly does look a better match and is definitely the one who married Frank Taylor. The only thing that worries me is the Kathy says, "the Bowden family are from Lancashire."

Dorothy Taylor with mother maiden name Bowden was born Glossop 1923. I presume these people are no longer alive as you are asking for information.

thank you for that info I was beginning to wonder about Isabella's maiden name as I can't seem to get any info of the marriage between Frank and Isabella. And yes you are right my parents are both dead so I have no one to ask so I thank you.

This now means the title of this thread no longer applies!

Your  Isabella Bowden, was, as has now been established, born June quarter 1882 Hayfield Registration District (on border of Cheshire/Derbyshire) at Ludworth, the daughter of Samuel Bowden bc.1847 Ludworth, Derbyshire and Emma Nowell (bc.1847 Werneth, Cheshire) who married in 1864 Stockport.

Frank Taylor birth March quarter 1881 Stockport and he was indeed the son of a William Taylor, Blacksmith.   William Taylor bc.1852 Ludworth, Derbyshire and wife Elizabeth Wood bc.1849 Compstall, Cheshire married Mar.quarter 1872 Hayfield.

Thank you so much for this information, I had been tearing my hair out, I can now sleep thanks to you. At least now I can try and trace the family further back without going on a wild goose chase.
