I have a Clive Lees Wood, from his Air Force record I know he changed his name to Clive John Butler. Why ?
His service number indicates he entered the RAF as an apprentice at RAF Halton in Jan 1936.
Clive L Wood Mother's Maiden Surname: Brittain
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1920
Registration district: Walsall Staffordshire
This is the only marriage with Wood / Brittain.
Clive John Butler Birth Date:27 Jan 1920
Died Nov qtr 1989 Age at Death: 69 Wrexham Registration district .
I`m trying to find if he had any siblings . I have his Training Log book and would like to pass it on.

I`ve missed something out and can`t modify my post.
Clive L Wood Mother's Maiden Surname: Brittain
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1920
Registration district: Walsall Staffordshire
Marriages Jun 1920
Brittain Sarah E Wood Foleshill
Wood Henry J Brittain Foleshill

Are you sure about this marriage being the correct parents?
Marriages Jun 1920
Brittain Sarah E Wood Foleshill
Wood Henry J Brittain Foleshill
The reason I'm querying this is searching freeBMD for births with parents Wood/Brittain shows a birth later in 1920 in Foleshill district.
On the same search there are 6 births 1913-1922, including Clive's, in Walsall district.
A bit earlier- Apr./June 1897 Walsall district
Laura Alice Brittain & John Henry Wood on same page- may or may not have married each other
Clive's birth certificate would sort out his parents' names
-
Thanks.
No, I `m not sure, as I said that was the only marriage with Wood / Brittain I could find.
I can`t modify my posts, so it probably got a bit messy
This is the only marriage with Wood / Brittain.
The Clive L Wood is the only one in the right qtr that matched his date of birth shown on the death entry when he is Clive John Butler.
Jan - Mar 1920.
I`m hoping to reunite his RAF Training Log book with a relative, so don`t really want to spend cash on a search that might be useless.

They did marry, in 1911 , John Henry is 33, Laura Alice is 32.
They have had 7 children, 5 still alive. Eldest 10 , youngest 10 months.
This is a possibility for Clive Lees Woods parents if we take the ages in account.

I'm a bit confused here ???
You have Clive's name and birth registration which gives mother's maiden name as Brittain but not the actual birth certificate.
So, how do you know "They did marry, in 1911 , John Henry is 33, Laura Alice is 32. They have had 7 children, 5 still alive. Eldest 10 , youngest 10 months. This is a possibility for Clive Lees Woods parents if we take the ages in account."

Hope this helps
I do not have Clive Lees Woods birth certificate.
I have his death index registration in Wrexham as Clive John Butler born 27 Jan 1920 died 1989 aged 69.
This matches the Clive Lees Wood b 1920 Walsall MMN Brittain
He joined the RAF as Clive John Butler formerly Clive Lees Wood.
1911 census . Walsall.
John Henry Wood is 33, Laura Alice ( Brittain) is 32. Married 13 years
They have had 7 children, 5 still alive. Eldest 10 , youngest 10 months.
This is a possibility for Clive Lees Woods parents if we take the ages in account."
This is the search for CJB in the RAF.

It`s still not known why his name was changed, but it does seem to be the same man. is it definitely your`s.
I waited for well over 18 months before deciding what to with the book and cap, but after I sent them to the museum another relative turned up.

Hi,
My father in law was born Clive lees Wood in Walsall, January 27th 1920, his mother's maiden name was Brittain, he entered the RAF as a boy apprentice as a member of the 33rd intake at Halton. He was an aircraft engineer, took his wings to become a bomber pilot in WW II, crashed in early 1945, became one of Archie MacIndoe's guinea pigs, sired three daughters and I married the middle one.He died in Wrexham November 16th 1989.
The name change came about when his mother remarried a William Butler and insisted that his name should be changed to Butler, (muchagainst his better judgement), and he was informed of his new name by his Commanding officer, when he was a serving officer,

Hi,
Dave here again. I got the date of name change wrong. He was still an apprentice at the time and the date of the document of change of name, taken by a Commissioner for Oaths is February 22nd 1937.

Have you any idea which school he went to. It would be nice for the Trenchard Museum to have some added details.

Just came across this post, this sounds like my great nan and grandad. They were from Walsall. My grandad was Leonard Wood, born to John Henry Wood and Laura Alice Brittain. I am looking to starting a family tree.
