So are we all updating to new operating system?
Free to Windows 7/8 and 8.1 for 12months from release date.
My 2 personal machines will be updated, if o'k my wife will be updated also.

..., if o'k my wife will be updated also.
Do you have a new model in mind?

Reckon I'll let others find all the bugs first, then may update in about a year?! ;D ;D
-
I have, just this morning, got a "Get Windows 10" notification on my bottom toolbar.

Have I just sold my soul?

Wndows 10 is probably the first operating system from Microsoft that has already been bug tested by users. Technical Previews have been available for some time and information fed back to Microsoft who actually respond - it appears that they may be determined to get this one right.
-
My priority for any operating system is that it runs the software I want to put on it - I'm not going to spend hundreds on new software just so I can say I've got the latest OS!
I'm still using XP quite happily on my p.c., and there's no real reason to change that.
;)
I'm quite open to giving Win'10 a go, but only if it doesn't cause problems with my presently functioning system on the laptop.
:-\ ;)

I have to say I agree with Roger the Hat, I would like to keep using the software I am currently using without having to renew it all because it doesn't work with Windows 10. Been caught out that way before.

If your software ran in Windows 7 then it will run perfectly well in Windows 10.
In use W10 has shown a greater tolerance for older software than Windows 8 e.g. Microsoft Office 2000 - wouldn't install on W8 but runs perfectly happily on W10. (I prefer it to the Office 365 installed on my W8 machine)
One of the old problems when upgrading Windows versions was that often hardware such as printers etc were left behind but with Windows 10 this has been largely overcome - again possibly due to the users feedback during the technical preview period.
As regards changing from XP to any later version of Windows - the problems come due to switching from a 32 bit memory structure to 64 bit systems but I've never believed in change simply for the sake of change or to keep up with the neighbours. If the machine does what you want and in the way that you want it done why change ?

Thank you for the positive feedback.
I agree with this. I am happy with 7 and how it functions , for me, at this point. My concerns were more to do with conflicts and it seems you have given cause to believe Microsoft have listened and learnt. :)

I too have just had this appear in the same way and I currently have Win7.....I had to upgrade some software when I changed from XP and am wary of committing myself to to the upgrade.
So I am grateful for the feedback.

Not long turned lappy on and noticed the "Get Windows 10" notification. Happy with Windows 7 at the present time, and it isn't ready for Windows 7 Heaven, and as I used to say to son "Do you really want or need the latest stuff"?
Cheers

End of support refers to the date when Microsoft no longer provides automatic fixes, updates, or online technical assistance. This is the time to make sure you have the latest available update or service pack installed. Without Microsoft support, you will no longer receive security updates that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software that can steal your personal information. For more information go to Microsoft Support Lifecycle .

I appreciate that there's no payment to be made to Microsoft, but it's not an entirely free download! We have two laptops running Win7 and we rely on a pre-paid dongle as we're travelling around Australia. Two x 3GB would be a huge chunk out of our allowance (9GB costs $180) so we won't be upgrading anytime soon.
Any ideas as to how we could reduce the cost if we did decide to go for Win10? And could someone tell us where MS say it's free for twelve months from release please?
Carol

Nay Mike things are not that bad ::)
I was referring to the fact her laptop will be the last one to be updated to 10. (Assuming no problems)

I've not had a notification yet, I use Windows 8.1. Perhaps I should shut down my laptop, I don't usually bother, I just close the lid and it goes to sleep until I open the lid again the following morning.
-
I've not had a notification yet but I don't let Microsoft update anything automatically. ;D Apparently the update is KB3035583 according to http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fel/ so I suspect you have to wait for it to either download automatically or notify you its available to download.
I'm with KGarrad on this one, I shall be waiting a while before I update.
-
I've been running W10 on a laptop for sometime now.
No problems.
Maybe now "they" are employing professional developers using "quality" processes,
coz [ for my use ] it works so far.
-
I have a dual boot with Windows 7 and Linux Peppermint 3.
Always use Linux, updates are quicker, I have Libre Office, open source lots of free software.

I don't let Microsoft update anything automatically, although sometimes I get a message that states if I don't update, then the computer will close down and updates will be done automatically. I've just looked at updates waiting and there were 14, none of them anything to do with Windows 10. No doubt I'll get a message sooner or later.

Interesting article about how "ready" Windows 10 may be on the 29th July - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01feo/. I think I'll stand by my usual view of leave it a while before upgrading so they can fix any issues first. ;)
Shame that anyone running Windows 10 Home edition is going to lose the option of choosing whether or not to install updates as soon as they are released. :-\ I know many people do but from Windows 10 onwards anyone with a Home edition will have to whether they like it or not. :-X Just glad I rebuilt my laptop with a spare Pro edition licence when I first purchased it, at least I will be able to continue choosing when to install updates. ;D

Although the ambiguous statement that MS made regarding updates for Home Edition (which actually said they would be automatically available, not automatically installed) has been amended to state that it was made for the pre release Windows 10, and are "subject to change". So we are none the wiser on how updates will be applied in the released Home Edition.

I've been running the Win10 preview on my 6 year old laptop for quite a while now, and it runs well and its a bit faster than Win7.
I'll upgrade my laptop fully when Win10 comes out but I'll probably wait 6 months before upgrading my primary desktop pc.
-
Might be a silly question , but can I reverse/revert back to 7 if I am not happy? What is required to do so if I choose?
-
Might be a silly question , . . .
Well if it is, here's another. Can it be dual booted wth 7, 8, 8.1 ? Sort of try before you buy disrupt your system.

Yes & No ... it's unlikely that the free version will as it appears to check for the presence of a valid version of W7 or W8 however as with any other version of Windows buying the commercial product will allow you to do this.
-
According to this article - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fez/ - the Windows 10 alert for Windows 7 users is an optional update, but a recommended update for Windows 8. So if you have Windows 7, you'll need to actually tells Windows Update to install it. ;)
-
It seems there's an update K3035583 that needs to be downloaded before one gets the message. I've checked all the updates so far this year and I've not got that one yet. I guess they're updating gradually, so as not to mess up the system.
-
I disabled all the windows 10 upgrade notifications. Im very happy with win 7, and dont need the strange hybrid interface of tablet/desktop which they are trying to force on people.

Hi, just been reading all the posts here re windows 10,I learn a lot from rootschatters comments.
I have Windows 7 and have got the Windows 10 reminder.
Because I'm technically pretty hopeless,I'm quite worried about how the upgrade will eventually successfully install on my PC - just what action will be required from me?
I'm scared stiff at the prospect of messing up and ending up with nothing working properly.
Currently my PC is set for Windows to automatically update - will Windows 10 upgrade automatically in the same way once I have downloaded it?
Also, I like to backup all my files/docs/photos onto a Seagate external hard drive but I'm concerned that it might not be compatible with Windows 10 - or will it still work o.k ?
grateful for any helpful comments.
Barbara.

Once notified that your W10 is available you will need to download it from the link supplied
I'm scared stiff at the prospect of messing up and ending up with nothing working properly.
The update process is automatic once you intiate it but if it cannot install W10 will reinstate your previous version of Windows. W10 is in my experience far more forgiving of older programs and technology than Windows 8 was (as an example my printer/scanner ran perfectly well under W10 which didn't require any driver updates/downloads which W8 did)
Currently my PC is set for Windows to automatically update - will Windows 10 upgrade automatically in the same way once I have downloaded it?
Yes
Also, I like to backup all my files/docs/photos onto a Seagate external hard drive but I'm concerned that it might not be compatible with Windows 10 - or will it still work o.k ?
shouldn't be any problems
The choice whether to install W10 is up to each individual it is not one that is being forced upon anyone.
In its favour are a few points
a) its free to download and install (for a limited time and if you qualify etc)
b) its actually pretty good at what it does
c) It appears far more tolerant of previously installed software and attached hardware than some previous versions of Windows were.
d) in a Mouse & Keyboard environment it is actually much better than W8 (or 8.1) although it does retain some of the characteristics that W8 users will recognise.
-
Hi Falkryn, thanks very much for the detailed reply.
You've explained it really well and I don't feel quite so apprehensive about it now.
I think my best bet is to reserve my Windows 10 upgrade initially but once it has been downloaded at the end of July,I'll wait before installing it until other more competant Rootschatters have installed it and hopefully share their experience with us.
Really appreciate your guidance on this one.
Thanks again.

I've wondered about this Windows 10 'invite' which appeared on my screen.
I've only just got use to 8.1 - and not completely at that! :'( :'( :'(
Falkryn are you saying we should bite the bullet and let it take over?

My 3 Windows 7 SP1 machines are still awaiting the invite for 10.

Have you checked Optional Updates, Win7 users aren't getting it as an automatic update? If its still not there, if you read http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fez/, you probably haven't got the update quoted installed.
-
My husband uses Win7 and has had an invite to update to Windows 10, however I still haven't received a request and I use Windows 8.1. I would have thought they would have sent out invites to all Windows 8.1 users before Win7 which hasn't had any problems.

Elitist ::)
;D ;D
I think its more a random Microsoft User freebie. Or it could be based on IP address and 2 in one household would miss out, or MS figure you can transfer from one to another. Not sure

The quoted update KB3035583 has not been installed. (no option found to download as yet)

Have a look at the posts on here http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fgm/. There are several posts on that page and the next one which provide direct links to the patch on Windows Update. Just need to ensure you download the correct version, although the wrong one shouldn't install.
If you google the KB number, there are quite a few posts about it and the issues getting it downloaded. ;D

That doesn't seem to work hallmark. I have read somewhere that if you have Windows 8.1 and there is a search icon on the page with the apps, then your computer is ready for Windows 10. I have a search icon but for the life of me can't remember whether it's always been there, or if it's something new. I rarely go to the apps page, I've got Windows 8.1 to open up on desktop.
-
After looking further into the failure of the various Kb updates, it looks like Microsoft has withdrawn the 2 updates temporary.
[I will just have to take a backseat and wait]

What doesn't seem to work?
That is a screen shot of the notice I got and 2nd one just shows what you get....
-
I meant when I tried to reserve/install, I didn't get anywhere, I just kept being taken back to a Microsoft page.
-
Also if Windows 10 is an free upgrade from 8.1, what about laptops like mine that were Windows 8 when I bought it, but I've already had a free upgrade to 8.1?
-
My Windows 7 PC automatically placed the icon in the system tray but for some reason my Windows 8.1 laptop did not.
I managed to force the icon to appear using this technical method:-
http://techdows.com/2015/06/how-to-enable-get-windows-10-app-icon-windows-7-or-8-1-taskbar.html
1) I ran the script as the Administrator
2) I then used Method II - using the Task Scheduler to invoke it
It's worth trying if nothing else has worked.
-
downside - I've tried that, I got the script file called ReserveWindows10.cmd which I have to save in the 'C' drive, which I assume is what 8.1 calls Windows8_OS (C:). I've now got it in Windows C>Users>Liz, (although it also just shows up under Downloads) but its a CMD file, so how do I now run the file, either with or without the adminstrator prompt?
Sorry to be so dim.
Lizzie
-
You don't need to run it from a command prompt, just use Windows Explorer to navigate to where the file is located and right click it and select Run As Administrator. Then a DOS style screen will launch itself and start executing the script.
It get stuff in an infinite loop - in which case just close down the CMD screen using the cross on the top right hand corner. Then right click the file and select Edit and change the value below from zero to one:-
if NOT "%errorlevel%" == "0" ping localhost >nul &goto :CompatCheckRunning
-
Well all good things comes to those that wait!
First update on startup this morning, icon on toolbar now visible on startup this evening.
Brian
-
downside - I'll get back to you tomorrow (Monday) afternoon. I don't even know where to find Windows Explorer on 8.1. I think I need to start again.
-
Downside, I clicked on the link you gave me and after scrolling down, I came to Method I which starts 1. "Open Notepad" and copy and paste the text. 2. is the text. 3 Save it as "Reserve Windows10.cmd" in 'C' drive - it then gives a link from which one can download the script file without copy and pasting. 4. Run the file by opening comman prompt as administrator.
That is where I am stuck. I don't understand how I can run a text file.
What am I doing wrong?
Lizzie
-
When you save the file in Notepad the default Save As is *.txt but you need to click on the down arrow and change that to All Files (*.*) so the file is saved as ReserveWindows10.cmd otherwise it will be saved as ReserveWindows10.cmd.txt. That is the important thing, because you cannot run a text file - it must .cmd at the end and then Windows knows that it should be run as an executable file in a DOS shell i.e. a black screen with white text. By the way you can name the file as anything you like e.g. Lizzie.cmd as long as it has .cmd at the end of it.
Save the file in My Documents if you like - somewhere you can easily find it.
To find the file - right click the Windows button in the bottom left hand corner and select File Explorer - then double click Documents (if you saved it there). Then right click the file and run it as Administrator.
-
Lizzie/downside: Family friend having just purchased Windows 8.1 laptop 4weeks ago.
The computer just updated itself to Windows 10 notification by itself last week.
[Could the problem experienced by Lizzie be like myself, no file available from Microsoft]
Brian
-
Downside - I did as you said, but even though I changed to All Files, it is still a text file, and when I click to open, I don't get an option to Run.
I checked the link you gave and it does say For Windows 8.1 Update I should have installed KB3035583 and KB2976978. I've checked on recent updates and I have both of these, KB3035583 installed 20.5.15 and KB2976978 installed on 6.6.15. So perhaps my laptop is ready for Windows 10 without my having to do anything.
Lizzie

Make sure you can see file extensions by following these instructions:-
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions#show-hide-file-name-extensions=windows-7
If your file is a text file then it will have .txt at the end of it. If that is the case then rename it and delete the .txt so that it ends in .cmd. Then right click it and you should see the option Run as Administrator.
Basically, I just tried getting the Get Windows 10 logo in my System Tray. You don't need to reserve a copy as you can manually download it from July 29 onwards providing you qualify.

Sorry, didn't see your reply Downside, I went away on 19 June. We're having a rest day today - OH fast asleep on the sofa in the rented house! - so I decided to have a quick look at Roots before going back outside in the sun. I'll try this when I get home in another 10 days or so and if that doesn't work I'll wait until 29 July.
Lizzie
-
As everyone probably knows by now. Windows 10 will be available to download from 29 July. It's free to Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users. It has been mentioned that those using XP and Vista would be looking to pay £99.99 if they wish to have it.
From what I have read there is a problem with the start menu and it crashes on occasions. It also seems that Microsoft might not be able to fix all bugs before 29 July.
I have decided I will stick with Windows 7 probably until the end of the year, possibly early next year before downloading it. Hopefully by then most problems will have been resolved.
I also have deleted the Windows 7 update that brought Windows 10 to users notice, KB 3035583. When this came back up as a new update I merely 'hid' it. This also got rid of the notiification on the task bar.
-
This is what I know so far:
Prior to the release of Windows 10 in July, Microsoft have been issuing various releases of Windows 10 to enable testers (world wide) to check for problems. (won't say bugs) ;)
As one problem gets fixed another crops up, so forward 2/3steps backwards 1.
Before anyone downloads the final release read as much as you can about any setbacks.
[Give it a few months and see how it shapes up!]
Brian
-
so forward 2/3steps backwards 1.
So you mean forward two thirds of a step and backwards one? ;D ;D ;D
-
It also depends on how long their legs are!!
-
Some features are broken on release but are repaired next release, but fixing one breaks another.
Brian
-
Smashing!
-
Don't you get the feeling that win10 users are guinea pigs helping to 'iron' out problems
and conflicts with their final windows OS?
Personally, I shall wait at least 9 months before I let my Win7 m/c anywhere near upgrading
to Win10.
I still DO NOT see any upgrade message to win10 in the task bar even though I
have fully updated the OS two weeks ago. New updates are due on Tuesday next
perhaps something will show then. I won't be holding my breath.
I much prefer using linux boxes to ms OS due to enhanced security measures.
Jim
-
My feelings also, critical elements of the operating system reported on a daily basis as not working!
Brian

According to this article http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fez/ which I posted a link to on this thread early in June, the update for Win7 users which should allow the Win10 message to appear is an optional update. So you have to select in your PCs Windows Update settings it to install, although it obviously has to appear under optional updates for you to do this which I gather has been some of the problem for some Win7 users.
Personally, I shall wait at least 9 months before I let my Win7 m/c anywhere near upgrading to Win10.
Me too. As there is 12 months available to upgrade, the fact some aren't getting the upgrade message yet really isn't too much to be worried about.
-
Could the latest Windows updates be the last for Windows 7 prior to Windows 10?
Just finished doing an install of the July updates, 3 machines done each 160Mb each :o
Surprised how quickly each machine took to do, mind you it does help if you have a quick connection.
Brian
-
My PC has been sitting on 0% updated for the last 1.5 hours! It is going to be a long day!
Kerryb
-
Just updated two Win7 m/c, one yesterday and one today; download about 160Mb
went smoothly (about 15min each), so far, so good.
Still no sign of the taskbar notification for Win10 and both updates
KB3035583 and KB2976978 are installed to both m/c.
There should still be updates for Win7 next month.
Jim
-

Jim
There'll be updates of some form for Win7 until 2019 because its still supported by microsoft until then, just nothing major as its now out of mainstream support.
-
We just bought a new laptop through our local IT trouble-shooting company ( good friends we have known for years since they started). They installed Win 7 for us as that is what we had before, we have a Win 10 notification on the taskbar.
Their advice 'Ignore the Win 10 download option, we're going to download it on a few of our machines & run it for a while to check for glitches. Then we'll tell you when it's "safe" to install Win 10'.
Good enough for me. ;)
-
So are we all updating to new operating system?
Free to Windows 7/8 and 8.1 for 12months from release date.
I'm still on my 2006 Windows XP PC :)
-
I've still not had the Windows 10 notification, but like most people I'm going to wait a few months before I download it.
-
I'm still on XP on the pc - some of my hardware/software won't work properly on anything later.
:-\
I've got the notification on my Win7 lappy, so I'll give it a go - but only 'cos Falkyrn said it was reversible if Win10 isn't suitable.
As long as I know who to blame if it all goes wrong.................!
;D ;)

the tech reviews all talk of a 30 day limit once you make the switch before Windows deletes "old" versions
https://techingiteasy.wordpress.com/2015/03/24/how-to-rollback-to-a-previous-version-of-windows-from-windows-10/
Windows 10 is different and there will be a learning curve from W7 and even from W8 but in use it feels more like W7 than 8 ever did. The start bar is different in layout but if you take a little time to get used to it and to adjust it to your own preferences it becomes second nature. Many of the Windows function screens (control panel etc) are in different places but this has been the case with every incarnation of Windows since the first one.
-
Falkryn - does that mean you have already upgraded to Windows 10?
Lizzie

Falkryn - does that mean you have already upgraded to Windows 10?
Lizzie
I have been using the technical previews for about a year now ... which supplies information to MS about program and hardware conflicts. ( nothing special in that as there at least 1 million users at the moment).
Windows 10 is running on my laptop which was originally a Vista machine which I had upgraded to W7. Performance is better than W7 given the hardware it uses and it has also suported older programs which I had installed on there e.g Office 2000 is not supposed to work (according to MS) but it does. My printer and scanner which required updated drivers on the main machine (W8.1) worked first time with W10.
There have been a number of "strong language sessions" along the way but W10 has continued to improve with each iteration.
However my advice, as always, is that if you are happy with what you have got "leave it" don't feel pressured into change simply for the sake of change.
-
I've got 8.1 and I've got used to it now, but if 10 is better than I'll probably go for that, no doubt in the future 8.1 will be phased out as so many people dislike it.
-
The main problem with Windows 8 (and partially 8.1) is that it was designed for Tablet use - on a tablet it is actually quite a good system but MS failed to take into account the fact that most users were sticking to a mouse and keyboard system.
Although every new version of Windows has required some getting used to I personally feel that W8 was a step too far - Although to be fair at the time of its conception, Tablets with their touch screens were taking the computer world by storm and it was probably considered that desktops would follow the same path.
W10 designers appear to have taken this lesson to heart and given old methods of working a new twist but at the same time leaving them familiar enough that we users will not feel too alienated.
-
I've still not had the Windows 10 notification, but like most people I'm going to wait a few months before I download it.
Same here Lizzie.

I'm not sure if this a sign of things to come but last night my weekly Windows system backup which normally takes 15-30 minutes took 9 hours! My normal My Documents backup took about 10 minutes so I don't think there was general technical problem with backing up data.
I use Windows backup by the way.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has recently experienced long backup duration similar to mine.
-
I'm more worried that if I upgrade to W10 that MS Office, Photoshop, Ancestry, our scanner and printers won't work to name a few programmes and equipment.
-
I'm sure they will. When I had to get a new laptop as my other had died, Windows 8 had only just come out and the salesman in a well known PC shop told me that none of my programs would work - of course they all did, as all the suppliers of the programs, RoboForm, Legacy, etc. just upgraded their systems so that they'd work on Windows 8, I'm sure they'll all do the same thing again if necessary - they mustn't be very happy with Microsoft when they keep changing their systems as it costs them money too.

Quick update on availability of Windows 10.
The July date is for release to OEM suppliers, (computer shops etc) for general usage the date looks like end of August/September.
Brian
If I can find any other information will post here.
-
Thanks Brian.

Just got an email from MS but to be honest it looks likes and upsell of products ''that I cant be without for W10'' ::)
Just a quick paste
When can I upgrade to Windows 10?
We want to give every customer a great upgrade experience, so we’re rolling it out in an organized way to manage high demand and to make sure that the upgrade is right for your device. After July 29, when Windows 10 is ready for your device, it will download in the background. You’ll then get a notification to schedule your upgrade right away or at another time that’s convenient for you.
Then the rest was basically spam
Cortana
Your truly personal digital assistant, Cortana helps you get more done no matter what device you’re on. By learning about you over time, Cortana becomes more useful every day.
Oh and MS... Aussies are going to call her Cortina. Guaranteed.
-
A few words of caution
Setting up - the latest iteration of the technical preview is the first with the official set up process for W10. I would advise anyone installing W10 to choose Customized installation rather than Express Installation unless you want to be sending a fair amount of information to MS.
In use - Cortana and various other parts of the "live internet experience" require a constant internet connection which is fine unless you have a data limit imposed by your internet provider.
-
Falkryn - We used to have unlimited internet, but when we changed to PlusNet my OH decided we didn't need unlimited as we don't play games, download films etc. Are you saying there is something called Cortana that runs all the time with Windows 10, and if so is it possible to delete/close it?
-
LizzieW:

As I understand it "Cortana" is the equivalent to "Siri" on the IPad/IPhone.
Maybe another 'useless' addon that no one wants or cares about.

Cortana is the "Virtual assistant" which can be part of the Windows set up - it allows you to search both your computer and the internet by basically speaking to your computer to give it instructions. It does not need to be activated.
The main "always active" parts of W10 are similar to Windows 8 Apps such as News email weather etc but again they can be turned off but by default they are switched on from the start. While individually they don't use a lot of data it will add up.
Like Windows 8 W10 trys to get you to log in with a Windows account which gives you access to various MS functions e.g Onedrive online storage but it is possible to sign in with a local account (ie one that is only on your computer) which cuts out much of the online linking.
-
Thank you Falkryn and Jim.
Falkryn - When I bought this laptop with Windows 8 I didn't have to log in with any e-mail, but when I upgraded to 8.1, Windows suddenly "gave" me a new e-mail address. I've never used it and it only shows up if I restart the laptop. I just ignore it and log on with my own password.

i Brian (A slow learner)
Windows 10 is the most widely tested version of Windows ever, given the number of users on the Technical Preview scheme In use I have found it more tolerant of software and hardware than on previous updates.
I don't think there's any danger of your computer not working - the question(s) will be more along the lines of "I used to ....... but it won't work that way now" kind of routine. We all get set in our ways and get a little cranky when our routines are interrupted.
P.S. I've just read an article claiming that Cortana has been programmed to understand British Sarcasm - ::)

This first image shows an enlarged section of the desktop with the start menu as you see it by clicking on the start button ( Windows logo in the bottom left corner of the desktop)
The icons to the right hand side , should be familiar to W8.1 users and are "active icons" - these can be deleted, added to (by pinning items to start) or resized.
The list to the left contains your most commonly used programs and access to the most commonly required system functions. At the foot of this list is "All Apps" which lists all applications (programs) on your computer in alphabetical order - if there is something in this list that you commonly use (e.g. the snipping tool you can pin it to the start menu or the task bar (or both).
-
This second view is the screen that you get if you "right click" on the start button (windows logo) and shows the ease with which you can now access quite a variety of functions
-
This third view is the task bar.
In the left hand corner is the "Start Button" (windows logo)
Next is the search box & Cortana (if you have activated her - all images show Cortana as a female), this allows you to search both your computer and the internet for a file or information.
Next are the programs (now called Apps) which are pinned to the taskbar. to the Right are further standard icons showing connections etc.
One change that you may have missed the logo for Internet Explorer is missing and has been replaced by a similar looking "e" but this is for Microsoft's new browser program Edge - which is claimed to be fast, lean and efficient (the few tests I've done appear to bear this out). Edge is also far more standards orientated than Internet Explorer ever was and this may cause some problems for a few websites that broke the rules when developed.
-
Falkryn in Windows 8.1 if I right click on the Windows icon in the bottom task bar, I get the list in your 2nd image.
I don't like your first image, is it possible to alter it to a desktop view, like I've done with 8.0/8.1?
Is the task bar at the bottom of the screen?
This is how my desktop looks at present, will I be able to do something similar with Windows 10? I never go to the original page with the apps - most of which I've deleted anyway.
-
Falkryn in Windows 8.1 if I right click on the Windows icon in the bottom task bar, I get the list in your 2nd image.
They are similar but W10 gives you slightly more access
I don't like your first image, is it possible to alter it to a desktop view, like I've done with 8.0/8.1?
The first image is the desktop with the start menu open it doesn't stay like that and the usual desktop could look exactly like your own image
Is the task bar at the bottom of the screen?
Yes just as in W7 & W8/8.1
This is how my desktop looks at present, will I be able to do something similar with Windows 10? I never go to the original page with the apps - most of which I've deleted anyway.
The new start menu is a mix of the older style list type menu and the active icons from the tablet view of W8 ..... there is now no need to go to a separate screen for them and the start menu is fully configurable and can be set up to work just the way you want it to work.
-
So, 30 days to undo?
Keep an open mind, keep an open mind keep an open mind ;D
I will give it a go.

Thank you Falkryn. I suppose I'll get an invitation from Windows sooner or later. If not I assume I can still download Windows 10 from Microsoft site without having to pay for it.

Falkyrn, what a clear and helpful explanation! It's always easier with visuals of the actual screens.
I'll come back to this when we (eventually) take the plunge.
Thank you, Falk

Hi Falkryn,
I've been watching this Topic to get an idea of what to expect when Windows 10 arrives and I just wanted to say thanks for the helpful images you placed which are really useful,I keep my eye on this post all the time.
Cheers

My invite arrived today on my laptop but not on my desktop yet. I'm doing all the updates now on my pc as I'm sure one of them is a key to the invite to arrive.
ps... some good videos on youtube. But I will still wait till others have done the upgrade, I'm a little hesitant over my old programs that are one this pc.. particularly my FH ones and photoshop etc. I'll clear the laptop and play with that first!
ps there is a good video about checking if your pc/laptop/phone/tablet is ready for the upgrade... the invite can do the check.
-
I'm in!!!....... I got my invitation when they first issued same and I have dithered (as you do at 88) but have stopped now and will dive in boots an all.
I really liked W7 ...... but that rundown on W10 is terrific many thanks to Falkryn.
I know that my cognitive powers are not as they were and I will get frustrated but as we have so many helpful people here on rootschat that my fears are allayed.

Thanks for all the previous comments and information, especially from Falkyrn. Very useful.

I'm beginning to think Win10 isn't for me - the "always connected" philosophy isn't compatable with mobile connections with limited download allowances.
Cortana persistently collects and uploads personal data to "enhance the user experience", and some of the app's (uggh!) appear to be permanently connected to provide location-relevant information - not good for privacy or data limits.
I already have the software I need (apart from upgrades) so the app store is irrelevant to me as well.
:-\
I know most of these functions can be switched off/uninstalled, but then you're left with an OS that isn't vastly different from the one I'm using now!
Soooo, each to their own, but it looks like most of the advantages of 10 are designed for other customers; I'll be giving it a miss.
Thanks, again.

Dont forget that WIN7 & 8 have an End-of-Life date for support & updates .. and altho thats not the end of the world, if you use MS Security Essentials for AV et al protection, its a problem ...

From what I've read this morning I believe security updates are available till 2020 for Win7 (on this lappy), but I'm still very happily using XP on the PC!

From what I have been reading up on the subject of reverting back to Windows 7/8/8.1.
We are allowed 30days from date of install of Windows 10 to revert back by selecting menu.

From what I have read so far I can see no reason to update my laptop from 7 to 10, my use does not warrant it. I, like Roger, am still using XP on my PC, if that goes disastrously wrong then I will abandon that 11 year old computer and get another which will probably already have 10 installed.
Thanks for all the previous comments and advice and I wish all those updating every success and hopefully no problems.

Think my laptop has made its own mind up that it will have to be replaced😕 and therefore I will end up with windows 10. Battery has been dodgy for months and I've tried all the usual fixes. As of this week it won't charge at all so I think it has died. As its nearly 6 years old, it don't think its worth investing in a new battery for a discontinued computer so sooner rather than later I think I'll have to get a new laptop with W10. This one is windows7 and it's frustrating to have to think of a new one but in computer terms nearly 6 years is elderly.
-
With a PC that is 11 and a laptop nearly 5 years old I know how you feel candleflame.
Perhaps you could use your laptop plugged in until Windows 10 has had time to settle down and some of the probable bugs sorted?
Selina
-
Yes I'm using it plugged in but if you want to move to the printer in another room to print say a word document, then you either have to shut it down or just close it and then when it restarts, it says it closed unexpectedly etc.! Just frustrating not the end of the world.
-
Why do you have to shut down, or even close the laptop if you're just moving it to another room? Just leave the lid up and carry it wherever you need to. Take the lead and plug in again in another room too. Then carry on using it plugged in, until you are ready to buy a new one. Can you not link your laptop to the printer even though it's in another room. My husband used to have his study upstairs, along with the printer, but I could still send things to print even though my laptop was downstairs.
-
Hi, just wondering how many U.K Rootschatters will have their finger on the Windows 10 pulse at 00.01am tomorrow. ;D
Or is there a graduated time spread throughout the day. ???
Barbara.

The Beta Testers get it first - quite a lot of 'em ...
So DHYB for a couple of days ! :P

Blimey. Think I'll just go to bed instead.

If there is no battery the computer will go off as soon as it is unplugged won't it and so won't close down properly? The answer is a very long lead! ;D
-
Well, I'm off to a great start with Windows 10.
I've just looked at my recent update history and it says " Upgrade to Windows 10 Home - Failed" !!!!
Barbara. :(
P.S. that's on my laptop, nothing showing on main PC yet ( I'm almost afraid to look ).

Auto 2nd attempt -Failed Upgrade has just appeared. ???

Mine downloaded on the desktop PC when I turned it on this afternoon, so already to go when given the nod.

As Groom said, no battery as it doesn't now work so as soon as you unplug the mains lead equals no power!!

Are you a 'Beta' user - one of the early testers ?
-
Are you a 'Beta' user - one of the early testers ?
No, just reserved a copy from the reserve button. When I logged on yesterday to both desktop and laptop I installed what I assume was the final pre windows 10 update and after I restarted both of them, the download started, all 6GB of it onto each machine.
I assume that when I switch them on tonight, there will be an install button on my task bar, so I'll give it a go. Anything to replace Windows 8.1 on the desktop is fine with me, it can't be any worse. If it feels ok I'll update the laptop from windows 7.
Simon

I just hit the Windows 10 icon in the taskbar (already reserved last week) but it just said "We will let you know when it has arrived". Clicked on the icon 2 seconds later and its now downloading.
I'll check the laptop to see 10 its already downloaded.
I'll wait a couple of days to see the reaction on here and other forums, then I'll to do a backup first before doing the upgrade.

Same here. Sitting waiting for me

Interesting that you've effectively got it a day earlier than announced - are you in NZ ? :P :P
-
nope.. sunny ::) Berkshire
after downloading, it wanted to go straight onto the upgrade without asking! Cancelled till later
-
Still no invite or anything else on my laptop. I'll just wait until everyone else has tried it out and given their opinions, then download it.
-
Curiouser & curiouser - just powered up my Laptop (1st time in a couple of weeks - having left it WINX 'ready', ie with the GWX Icon there in the Taskbar) ..... notified me of a WIN7 update, did it, restarted and the WINX Icon has gone - still in the Configure list, and still showing as 'available' in WIN Update .... bit of a worry tho !
The Icon is still showing on this Desktop.
Ta for the Heads-Up that it launches straight into Upgrade ..... :)
-
Upgraded on my work laptop this afternoon, took a while but all seems ok. Followed Falkryn's advice on customised settings. Kind of glad I did, they want access to know everything barring what colour I painted my bathroom walls!!!!! :)
Still not had an invite to my own laptop with Win7 but at least I get to see what its like with work laptop first! ;D

Ta for the Heads-Up that it launches straight into Upgrade ..... :)
Well, I decided to go ahead with the upgrade on my laptop... Its still chugging away with the upgrade 53% so far so good. But it is taking a time, longer than microsoft suggest.
If, I had waited on my pc, I would have got another message asking me whether I wanted to start the upgrade now or wait till late. No harm done though as its still waiting on my pc.
-
Well, the idea that a few million early testers would get priority, seems to have gone out of the Window .... theres at least 3 here on RC who have it downloaded .... still waiting ::)
-
I still haven't had an invitation to register. I did all the checking that microsoft suggested and had all the updates to 8.1 that were listed. Then guess what I checked again today and there are 2 more updates required. One of them was only downloaded yesterday and I can't find the other one yet. I guess it's going to be nearly a year from 29 July (i.e. today) until everyone can download Windows 10. My OH has Windows 7 and he had the invitation to register and yesterday the invitation to download Windows 10 although he hasn't bothered yet.
-
something odd happening on my PCs - both no longer show the WINX 'invitation/reservation' Icon ...
can anyone who has 'reserved' and now downloaded check please to see if they still have the ICON - or remember if it was there during the actual download ?
Cheers !
-
The icon disappears but if you open windows update, win10 is sitting waiting for you.
Update done, settings modified ::) but my screen has frozen. I might have to force a reboot if it doesn't unlock itself

Mine downloaded, the icon has remained, but still to reserve, not the 'Your PC is ready for your free upgrade' flag.
Simon
-
Thx; but sadly not there in my case !
JC - Hope you get that lock-up resolved !
-
Err.... Finally unlocked!!!!
Had to search the web locking problems, which should have been resolved by now.
Came to the conclusion, there was a conflict with Avast. I disabled Avast and restarted, Taskbar not locked but still couldn't use "search" and neither was the windows start button working correctly.
I updated Avast, restarted the laptop and all is well. Turned Avast back on and still behaving properly.
Phew.....

HELP! ::)
I am useless about techy type thingies ::)
My only question at this stage is, what size is the download and does it use up my ISP data allowance ??? ???
I am sure there will be more questions when the time comes, but that is all for now!
Many thanks

Snap, is your broadband limited then?
Windows download is abt 6gb which is huge. It took ages even with 50gb download speed.
If you are limited, then could you "visit" a friend or family member, with your pc or laptop, who has unlimited broadband.
-
It will use your allowance but unable to determine size of file downloaded.
[What are your allowances by the way?]
(1 machine updated with 3 more to do, thankfully I don't have any limits) :o

Ok, I'm giving it a thumbs up now the install has settled down. ;D ;D ;D
If you are used to using a tablet, then you will be at home with it.
My only niggle so far, is that it took off spider solitaire. They have it windows store (free) but for some reason its not downloading. I think I can live without a game for now :o :-[
-
Thanks for the prompt replies JC and Brian :)
I use a dongle, have not got the best coverage, and I have got a total of 20gb but that has to last me a month! I tried downloading today without success, don't think my speed is good enough!
I will keep you updated, but I am not in any hurry!
Thanks again

It downloaded the Windows 10 Setup pretty quickly and verified it, now it's creating Windows 10 media, I don't know how long the complete download takes, I guess there's a lot more to download yet. I'm assuming that once downloaded, I don't need to start using it until I'm ready.

Hi Brian
All downloaded now and it looks exactly almost the same as Windows 8.1, except I don't know where the Apps are, but as I never used them that doesn't matter.
The main difference is the icons on the task bar at the bottom of the screen are much smaller than the ones I had on 8.1 - although they are the same icons as I had previously. I know there's a grey box marked "Search the web and Windows" which I wanted to shrink, as I thought that would give more room on the task bar and perhaps allow the other icons to be enlarged - but I can't. I also tried to enlarge the icons but can't do that either. One other problem, whenever I shut down, or restart my laptop - which obviously happened when Windows 10 was being installed, a Skype icon comes up on the task bar. With Windows 8.1 I could just "Quit Skype", I've got the option to do this now, but all that has happened is that instead of the Skype icon, I've now got an orange square - larger than the other icons on the task bar - with a white circle in it. I can't get rid of it. ???
The icons on the screen are the same size as previously.

I will wait and see how everyone goes with Windows 10, I have noticed the icon I had in the taskbar has now gone.

Much will depend on your broadband speed. Mine has taken 2 hours to download 12% at a very slow 1.5MB, which is about as good as it gets in our village. I believe the file size is about 4GB

It seems theres a few of us on WIN 7 that have 'lost' the GWX (WIN 10) Icon - seems to have happened after a Windows Update single fix yesterday morning - think its KB2952664 - took out both my Laptop & Desktop (WIN7) GWX Icons, and on the Desktop lost any refns at all to the Download being Reserved .... also noticed that GWX.exe wasnt running anymore... so I restored to a level prior to yesterday's fix and the Icon is back on both PCs, but no sign of the Download starting yet (nor on my Neighbours Desktop WIN7, who reserved WIN 10 same day)

That's what I thought, the only difference, apart from the apps being listed alphabetically when you click on the Microsoft icon, rather than being shown on a separate page, is that the icons on the bottom task bar are very small. I'm trying to find out how to enlarge them.

Updating to windows 10 has stopped the sticking especially on the providers site so it was probably to the use of flash plugin. Also it does seem quicker. The only thing I found so far is like what's been earlier said , Norton had been switched off but it's not the first time that's happened.
-
The other thing that's been cured, is that when I click on a folder in My Documents it just opens. Hallelujah. For months, I've had to right click, get up a list of suggestions and then click on Open. I know it's not too much to do but it just adds the odd second to opening up folders - and when you're getting on a bit every second counts. ::) ::)
-
must check iplayer and see if its got rid of that sticking business

not much different really if you ignore all the App crap off the Start menu ..... must say I dont like the style of Windows frames or font compared to the old classic or even WIN 7 Aero stuff - also I cant change the resolution of my widescreen monitor, its greyed out on (1024 by 768) ... and its brightness is down compared to WIN 7 - sigh, probably missing summat !
Ah, wait, an NVidia Driver is being brought down by Windows Update ..... why wouldnt it install from DVD ?
... and finally, NO Sleep or Hibernate option on Power Down - just Restart & Shutdown ... most odd ...
Onward & upward ....

Installation failed today.OH switches the computer on as he is making a cup of tea for me to drink in bed. He then leaves it while he brings me my tea and we sit for a while reading. So i'm not sure if the anti virus has kickd in and spat it out. I have now changed the settings to download but not install, as i want to check with SIL before installing.

Hi Lostris

I get sign out, sleep, shut down and restart.
I agree the apps on the start menu are rubbish. I went to All Apps and uninstalled the ones I didn't want, just right click on them. Some you can't uninstall. Same with the apps that are shown as pictures etc.
You can change the font, the brightness etc.

I'm not quite as happy with it as I was yesterday! ::)
Firstly I hate all the Apps on the Start up screen, the news appears to be basically American which isn't a lot of use to me in sussex, England but I am going to go through and uninstall a load.
What I find even more aggravating is that every time I send an email it automatically goes back to that start up screen rather than back to my Windows Live Mail screen and same with other packages. That is going to annoy me! ???

Apart from the apps, most of which I've uninstalled, everything else is working exactly as it did with Windows 8.1. No problem with Mozilla Firefox, or Thunderbird. Word is fine, my family tree program Legacy is fine. Everything is fine. ;D

Mike: Shame you can't find a friend with a quick connection! ::)
The fun starts when the download complete.

Yeah ;D . . . but it's a desktop PC so not quite so simple even if I could find someone. But I have been playing around with the Preview for a while, mainly to make sure I could install all the software I need. I was pleasantly surprised to find everything worked including some really old stuff.
Anyway I've now reached 50% downloaded in 14 hours. I even tried tethering my 4g mobile and bridging the connections for a while to speed things up, but I only have a 2GB monthly allowance on that so couldn't do it for long.
The extra time will allow me to finish making backups of all my data, which of course I always do regularly anyway ::) ::) ::)
If all goes well I plan to create a DVD and do a clean install, replacing the multiboot Win7/XP/Linux arrangement I had, since I find myself rarely using the other systems these days.
The new Windows 10 thread was a great idea, by the way 8)

I've just had the blue notice flash up that Windows 10 is ready to download. Can I just ignore it for a couple of weeks? I'm away from home at the moment and the download speed here is only about 1.5 Mb whereas at home I get over 60Mb, so noticing what people say about how long it takes, I presume I would be better waiting?

You can set a date and time for it if you wish.

You can set a date and time for install, but I thought the download just happened in the background without having to do anything (if you reserved your copy that is), mine did.
When I set a date and time for install, it was completely ignored, because when I shut down it started the installation process.

Change where? - its as much the 'style' of the WIN10 window-frames as the actual Font .... ref Screen Brightness, yes, can be changed manually, just curious why it dimmed down from WIN7 - contrast very obvious in the 40 mins from last seeing WIN7 to WIN10 running - and why the 'Resolution setting greyed out ... must be to do with the Graphics card drivers or similar, as the NVidia Centre in Control Panel is disabled too !
Shutdown options .... again strange why it changed, its not BIOS related ... WIN7 had Logoff/Hibernate/Sleep so why does WIN10 not consider it an option ... nothing obvious in Settings either ....

Have a look through these two articles from microsoft's forums, I'm assuming that it probably is the same although they are from last October, but can't test as have not upgrade:

Thanks SW ! Had also done some trawling (& noted the refn in your 1st link to a video driver solving the issue) plus I found an option in BIOS to address WIN8 vs 'Other OS' ...... then WUP installed an update for my NVidia GFX card driver and suddenly I had SLEEP back in the PO menu & huzzah, an option appeared in DISPLAY to set the Screen resolution ... all looking a lot better ..
LOL, yesterday I had message about failed Updates, and had the chance to configure WUP for when it would RESTART after Fix application .... - today it took me an age to find (again) where they'd put Windows Update - not impressed with either its new location (a SETTINGs item in the Start menu), nor its 'look & feel' - quite a retrogade step I feel ... Glad they left the screen for MS Security Essentials aka now DEFENDER the same as before at least !

My PC updated itself yesterday although I had told it i wanted to do it on Saturday morning ???
I never had Windows 8/8.1 so I was a little concerned about familiarisation but so far it hasn't caused me too much grief.
Family Tree Maker 2014 keeps crashing. It seems to be quite a common problem. I don't suppose Ancestry's I.T. bods had enough time (more than 6 months?) to make sure it would work ::)
I now have to hold down the shift key when I want to shut down.
