Good afternoon. I am trying to find information on my cousin Gareth Gough Morris. born about 1927 Toronto Canada. His mother Margaret Gough left for Canada with his father Jo Morris from Llangristiolus Anglesey sometime before his birth. I don't know when or if his parents married as Jo Morris was already married. Have tried to find record of Gareth's birth to no avail. Any help appreciated. I have an address for them in 1935..1308 Queen Street . Toronto
Thanks Karen

HI,
Welcome to RootsChat
There are no Central registries/indexes in Canada for BMDs. Canada has very strict privacy laws and each province imposes its own even further. Additionally, some provinces are more research friendly than others so researching in Canada can be challenging. Births would be protected by the 100 year rule - as a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 85 years ago (They are up to about 1929/30 at the moment) and deaths 70 years ago.

Garth Gough Morris details posted on this thread on another forum-

As well as Canadian record restrictions we aren't allowed to post details on Rootschat of anyone who might still be living.

I know Gareth has passed away many years ago.Thank you for your replies. :)

Hi Karen,
My name is Lisa Megan Morris. I also have a sister Joanne Morris. We know our fathers name was Gareth Gough Morris. We never got to meet any grandparents but we do know they came here from Wales.
Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa, Lovely to hear from you. We know very little about Megan and Joe Morris your grandparents. They left for Canada in 1927 , Megan was pregnant and her father John Gough was very strict so they left Wales. Megan died in 1948 . I believe she and Joe divorced and she remarried. My mum Menna Gough visited her in 1935. I have quite a bit on the Gough family tree if you would like any info or photo's.
Hope to hear from you.

Hi LisaMeganB and Katycat60

Fantastic result that you have found each other. Lisa would need to post a couple more times and then you can use the personal message system to swop information in private.

I am waiting for my sister to get home from work so I can call her. Do you really think that this would be the same person? It would be so wonderful to learn about family in Wales (Is that right?) My middle name and my sisters first name make it seem so real

I have Gareth Gough Morris born 19 August 1927 Toronto Canada. Parents Margaret known as Megan Gough born 1903 Howarden, Flintshire. William Joseph Morris born 1897 Landore, Swansea. I hope we are related :) all my mum's family are deceased so there is know one to ask. I have one photo of Gareth taken when he was about 14 or 15 I think.

That is my dads birthday. I didn't know the year . I was named after my grandmother and my sister after her grandfather....that is so amazing. I'm so shocked. Where are you? In Wales?
-
I am in Pembrokeshire. South Wales , about an hour from Swansea. So we are second cousins :)
-
We are second cousins. It is so amazing. I have to admit I'm so happy. I can't wait to spread the news.
-
My Dad married Phyllis Marie Wright and together they had 3 daughters. Linda Marie Morris, Joanne Morris and Lisa Megan Morris.
Do you know where my dad is buried? Trying to find his gravesite is how I happened upon your post in here.

Do you know when he died Lisa ?

Hello!
I have just stumbled across this thread, I'm not sure if you'll both be able to see these as quite a bit of time has passed! I wanted to add a little information about Joe Morris - he was in fact my grandfather, my father's father.
All the information that I have read fits with the stories that I was told as a child in Swansea. In 1974, my parents and I flew to Toronto to meet Joe!
I would love to hear from you!

Hello SD...Very happy to hear from you. This would make us 1st cousins as we shared a grandfather. We know very little about Joe Morris. Just last week we received a lot of information about our father Gary and his time in the Canadian Army. I just called my sister and read her your note. My dad would have been your uncle. He has three daughters....How many children did Joe have in Wales?
-
Hi Lisa
So good to hear from you and to know that I have 3 more 1st cousins!
Joe was married to my grandmother Myfanwy Morris. They had 2 children....a boy and a girl.
Islwyn, my father, was 7 years old when Joe left for Canada. Glenys was about 6 weeks old.
I am an only child. Glenys had 2 children..Huw and Menna.
So you also have 3 more 1st cousins!
Does your family still live in Canada?
Look forward to hearing from you

We do. We are 3 girls. All grandchildren of Megan and Joe. We never got to meet them. Do you remember meeting Joe?
-
I do. My father hadn't seen his father since he left for Canada with Megan but had kept in touch. We were in Toronto for 3 weeks.
-
Did you meet my father?
-
No, we didn't. When did your father pass away? Do you have any photographs of him?
-
I have some on facebook. Lisa Morris Byrnes He died almost 30 years ago
-
Will be able to see photographs tomorrow.
My father passed away in 2011 just 2 weeks before his 91st birthday.
-
91 is a good age. Nice meeting you tonight Sian. I hope we chat again...Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Thank you very much for allowing me to see the photos. Joe and Gareth have been a bit of a mystery to us as a family! Although I met Joe I don't know very much about him. I am not on facebook, however, my daughter showed me on her account! Old age!!!!!
She is more than happy to connect via facebook, we can send photos to you that way. Photos of my father and one or two of Joe are in my parent's house in Swansea. When I go to the house this week, i will rummage for pictures to send to you! Sian
-
Hi Sian,
I'd be very happy to add your daughter to facebook. What is her name? She can also add my sister Joanne Plante. I wish I had more to show you. I wasn't very close to my father. I actually never met him until I was 21 years old. I tried very hard to have a relationship but his new wife didn't like the idea very much. My sister Joanne is eight years older then me and remembers him well. My father had a bad drinking problem and therefore had a very rough life. He did die from cancer, as did my grandmother Megan.I recently found some information that Joe and Megan divorced when Gary was only 8 years old. Do you know if he ever remarried? I understand that Megan did and she had another child John Bertrand. I would love to see a picture of Joe.
-
Hi Lisa
My daughter's name is Elin Haf Davies...there are quite a few of the same name so to make things easier she will add you. I might be able to get hold of some photos tomorrow.
From what my cousins and I remember being told, Joe also had a drinking problem. We did not think that my grandmother had granted him a divorce and therefore he was still legally married. My grandmother died January 3rd 1982. My father had a telephone call the very same day to say that his father had died two weeks previously. As far as we know he did not remarry. We did know that Megan had died of cancer. My father was a Welsh actor and I believe that Joe had connections with radio and television. You might find some more information through the Welsh chapel and Welsh Society of Toronto...he was a very proud Welsh speaker as are we all.
Is that you and your sisters in the photograph? ..Sian
-
I Added Elin. I actually have 4 sisters so we are 5 girls. My mother had two more daughters after her and Gary split up. I guess that's how Megan remarried so quickly after her and Joe split up. Just 3 months and then she married Vernon E Bertrand. I have heard from (Karen) that Joe worked for the CBC. I've also been told that he was a salesman. I will definitely look into the Welsh Society. I didn't even know there was such a thing. Who would have notified your father about your grandfathers death? Its so sad. Such tangled webs. Its good to know that Joe did keep in touch with his children in Wales. Did he ever travel back? Did your Aunt get to meet him? Do you know someone Huw Rufus?
-
Huw Rufus is your 1st cousin, Auntie Glenys' son. He has a sister Menna who is supposedly named after Menna Gough. My aunt sadly never met her father. I have also heard that Joe was a salesman. So Joe and Megan did marry? Maybe my grandmother didn't want to tell us that she had divorced Joe.
You are right...it is such a sad story and nobody left to answer our questions.
Bedtime for us now in Wales. Chat soon Lisa. Goodnight...Sian
-
Goodnight Sian. It has been fun finding out little bits.
Your father was an actor? How interesting. Must have been an interesting childhood.
I don't think that Joe and Megan ever married. She was married just 3 months after Joe and her split up so she wouldn't have had time for a divorce. I wonder why you didn't meet Gary when you came here. My Dad never spoke of him in the short time I knew him. It must have been a terrible falling out. At some point I think you forgive everything. This would mean that Joe is buried here somewhere.....know I must search :-)
