Hi,
As I'm new to posting here I hope I have the right place. I am researching the Davies family, namely Hezekiah Joseph Davies. He married Anne Baker and had 11 children. One of those children, Caleb Absolom, born about 1880 came to New Zealand and married Edith Ethel Brungar and had a family before dying in the flu epidemic in 1918. Caleb is/was my husbands Grandfather and I am trying to work out his family tree. We believe Hezekiah was known in the area of Eaton Bishop as Donkey Davies. I have the family sorted from Caleb down but I would like to find out more about his siblings, and if posible go further back from Hezekiah. I hope this makes sense and any information on this Davies family would be great. It would be also great to find out if there are any descendants still living in the area.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi
Probably Anne's brother. Didn't spot that !
Marriage Hezekiah Joseph Davies to Anne Baker last quarter of 1870, Hereford Registration District. Don't have access to Parish records.
Baker family easily traceable on Ancestry.
Should this topic be transferred to Herefordshire board ?

The marriage was in St. Peter's Hereford, grooms father was Hesekiah Joseph Davies.
Mike
Added from familysearch, which also has Hesekiah snr marriage and possible others.

Hi again, I think in 1851/61 Hezekiah and his father possibly go by their middle name, Joseph, living once again at Ruckhall Common, Eaton Bishop
Census ref 1861 RG09/1818/163/6 and 1851 HO107/1977/576/1

Fortunately there is a William Baker Christ. 1844 in Preston on Wye otherwise I would wonder why the marriage was in Hereford city.
There is a very local community magazine for that area, if I can find an email for the editor they may include a request for descendants, but it may not be soon

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply. We were always told that the family was from Wales!!! Thank you for pointing out it is England. Now I can straighten out the family :). If there is a different board that I should be on could you please point me in the right direction.
Many thanks
Jen.

Hi
The county borders on Wales, and going back a few centuries the position of the border fluctuated as the Welsh Princes fought against the English Lords. It can be argued that the area is "occupied" Wales !!!
The surname 'Davies' indicates Welsh ancestry, and 'Baker' English ancestry.

Thank you for the explanation. Certainly makes sense. To add to the mix on my husbands Paternal side his Grandfather was from England and his wife who he met in NZ was from Scotland. 😄😄

You my be interested in these two monumental inscriptions from Eaton Bishop churchyard.
Affectionate remembrances ot Elizbeth beloved Wife of Hesekia Joseph Davies of this parish who departed this life dec. 21st 1877 aged 51 years.
Ann wife of Hesekia Joseph Davies who died nov. 19 1899 aged 51
also of Hesekia Joseph Davies died nov. 2nd 1930 aged 84.
I have photo of both headstones if you wish.
This beautiful old church has stained glass windows dating from 1330.
It also has a book in the church listing all memorial inscriptions and their location, which we did not notice till after we had searched the graveyard. :) :)
There are many unreadable headstones from earlier dates

Wow.....thank you so much and yes I would like to see these monuments. I am in New Zealand and so a bit far to pop over to see them for myself.
The church sounds lovely.😄

Many thanks. The pics came through great. My husband is delighted:). Now just have see how Elizabeth fits in.
Jenny:)

Have sorted who Elizabeth was......she was the mother of Hesekiah who was married to Ann. It is great to have the pics of the headstones to match the names on our tree. Just wondering though where her husband is buried. His name was Hesekiah as well.😄
-
the civil registration of his death is on freebmd in Hereford district in 1886.
In the 1881 census he is still in eaton bishop.
I would expect him to be buried with his wife Elizabeth, it is possible that they could not afford a new headstone for the grave, as there is not much room to add him to the existing one, I cannot find a burial entry for him in eaton bishop, this may be because the transcriptions on family search are from bishops transcripts, which do not cover the time period.
Maybe I missed something while I was there, but we both checked the book in the church, but it was only a list of memorial inscriptions.
