Title: John WEBB Victoria
Post by: Petros on Thursday 11 June 15 20:22 BST (UK)
John WEBB and his family, Mary Ann and 8 children left England sometime after 1856. He apparently died in Fitzroy in 1871 age 59

Any info on when, and on which ship, they arrived would be of interest. As would confirmation of his father's name - should be James.

There is a will online for a John WEBB who died in 1871 in Victoria  http://prov.vic.gov.au/

He was a butcher, at a quick glance I can't see any reference to Mary or the children - perhaps it is not him.   But I am having internet problems and didn't read it thoroughly.

   Ros

adding : There is another John WEBB who died in Victoria in 1871 who was born about 1816.   No parents given, age 55 reg 4154.  Perhaps the will is for him.

Also a possible sighting of a part of the family on a passenger list August 1857.
The Clipper Ship Eastern City out of Liverpool.
Passengers are Mary A 44yrs, Jas thos Adult, Francis Adult, john 17, Chas 9, Walter 1.

If these are a part of the family then John and several others may have travelled separately.

From the previous thread-

......... His presumed son John & his wife Mary were to be found at Clarence Grove, Saint Pancras with 6 children including Frederick & Agnes both born Spitalfields. John's birthplace was given as St Leonard's Shoreditch.
This family of John Webb & Mary Ann Amelia Belcher then emigrated to Victoria ........

This death would appear to be a son.

WEBB Henry
Father John
Mother Mary Ann BELCHER
Age 26
Birth Place LONDON
Year1877
Reg   696

This SEEMS to be the death notice for the above man.

There is only one man on the death  index named Henry WEBB, aged 26/7  dying 1877

Had you thought they were a newspaper publishing family?

Mmmm..
Not sure if the provider of the information for the obituary may have tangled the lives of father John WEBB and son Sydney John WEBB.

He seems to have been born around 1844, so would have been young to be employed by a newspaper in 1854ish!

This link to the family tree you posted Petros,

http://120.146.218.227/TNG/getperson.php?personID=I03397&tree=HillbrickTree1

Have you based most of your research into the family on this?

There seem to be no certificates shown in support of the tree.

Are you certain you have the correct  John WEBB and Mary Ann WEBB?

Many thanks all. Ros' contributions nail it and, fortuitously, also give his mother's maiden name.

The answer to your question is no. I stumbled across that while trying to clarify what had become of John and all his children, bar Mary Ann.

One of several newspaper listings of the arrival of "Clasmarden " from Liverpool to Melbourne in Nov. 1854.

I have not located a passenger list.

Some notes about  Holly Green Farm, the 430 acre property purchased by Sidney John WEBB in 1890

There are photos including one of his family.

1854 hmm little before time but who's counting bum steers anyway?

Petros,  I am thinking the possible reason for your statement of arrival being after 1856 is that the “family tree” lists the birth of a child to the couple in 1856 in England. This child was Sarah Martha WEBB.

The tree owner may be mistaken about this birth and this is perhaps it.
In 1854

Births Sep 1/4 1854

WEBB Sarah Martha. St Pancras 1b/139

She married and died in Australia.

Sidney John Webb did indeed work for The Age newspaper from age 10. He was presented with a gold watch on 2 January 1873 after 18 years service. (The Age, 3 Jan 1873, page 2.) His father John Webb, as well as several brothers and nephews, also worked in the newspaper industry.
