Title: Frederick Lisbert JEWELL
Post by: Greaves on Thursday 18 June 15 17:06 BST (UK)
Hi

I am interested in Emily Sarah Jewell, who was born in 1834 to John Jewell and Caroline Allen in Siddington, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. In June 1854, she married Joseph Bellenger, with whom she had several children.

I have, however, recently had my attention drawn to a baptism record for one Frederick Lisbert or Frederick Lisbut JEWELL, who was born in c1852. He was baptised in Siddington on 9 May 1852. There is no father given. His mother is given as Emily Sarah Jewell, who is described as a single woman.

I have not been able to find a birth certificate or any record of him after 1861. In 1861 he seems to be living with his Grand-parents, John and Caroline Jewell at Cricklade Road, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. At least there is an entry for him as Frederick Jewell aged 10, which is approximately correct. He is described in this entry as a "nephew".

Any help in tracking him down would be gratefully received.

No, but I will!

The Jewells and the Bellengers continue to throw up headaches.

Some simply disappear. Not easy, especially given their tendency to change names.

Pheno - these both look possible, especially the military connection. If I get hold of the marriage certificate, it will be interesting to see what it gives as his occupation.

However, I think that the marriage that you have found might be for the wrong Frederick Jewell. There was a Frederick Allen Jewell born in 1857 to Emily Sarah's brother William Allen Jewell and his wife, Elizabeth.

Hi Greaves,
Frederick JEWELL married Louisa KENT at St Peter, Duntisbourne Abbots in 1877. I shall be in Glos Archives tomorrow morning. Would you like me to do a transcription of the marriage?

Hi Victor

Yes that would be useful. It would settle whether he is Frederick Lisbut or Frederick Allen.

Many thanks

It does look more likely that the 1877 marriage was of Frederick Allen Jewell, given later census evidence as to age.

1891 shows Frederick Jewell 32 b Siddington and Louisa 30 b Duntisbourne (plus children), in Duntisbourne. RG12/2031/28/5.

I see that there's a lot of duplicated effort going on between here and another forum:

No offence intended. I value both forums and find both very useful. It is just that the different personnel that seem to inhabit both sites sometimes come up with different or new insights.

I have always valued RootsChat, but have recently also started using the other forum having found in a few instances that people on it sometimes come up with new info and insights.

Is this a dreadful failure of etiquette? If so I apologise.

Hi Greaves,
Source: A******y, Gloucestershire Marriages & Banns 1754-1913, Parish - Duntisbourne Abbots, 1823-1938, Image 25:-
Banns of Marriage between Frederick JEWELL, Bachelor and Louisa KENT, Spinster, both of this parish were published 25th November, 2nd & 9th December 1877.
The last marriage register held by Glos Archives (GA) finish in 1837, so I assume that the new marriage register, issued in 1837, is still held by the parish church or the Diocese of Gloucester. I will try to find out where the PR is held and get back to you with the details via pm.

Hi Greaves,
Just a brief update. I've located the Marriage Register which is held by one of the Church Wardens. His family has only just returned from holiday, but he will email me a transcription of the marriage as soon as he can.

Victor - many thanks.

I think that this conclusively proves that the Frederick Jewell who married Louisa Kent was indeed the son of William Allen Jewell, the brother of Emily Sarah. So this Frederick was the cousin of the Frederick I am interested in, who it looks like joined the Army.
