Hi I am hoping to find a birth record for Sylvester Doyle born sometime in the 1840's. He later lived in Clondalkin in Dublin.
Marriage to Mary Cardiff in 1873

I can see from the census that he was born in Wicklow but no clue where, and from the marriage record I can see his father is Patrick Doyle and his mother Mary ? but that is all I have to go on.

I'd look around Kilmacanogue.
There are petty session records in the 1860's for a Sylvester Doyle living there (presuming that your Sylvester was still in Wicklow then).
It's a starting point anyway.
Just working on the relative rarity of the Christian name, these two others with the same name in the same area might be worth looking at (and backwards) to see if you get leads !

Edited to add: Also a "Sera Doyle" to those parents.

Tara, I didn't have those hospital entries so I will definitely look into that. And with my family I am never shocked when prison records and court appearances come into play :)

I can't view the rootsireland one, I thought they'd have a pay-as-you-go option but alas.. but if that's him on the 1901 census it's not my guy anyway.

What was Patrick's occupation on Sylvester's marriage cert ?

I wouldn't rule out Gaffy's find just yet !
My point was just that there are two Sylvester's b abt the same time.
Gaffy do you know how well covered Wicklow is on rootsireland these days ?

Just having a look at Syl's hospital admissions, he was mainly in for bad back and varicose veins although in 1918 at the age of 72 he had influenza. But his address interested me. In 1911 it's Donohue St as per the census and in 1918 he is living with family in Nash Street but in the intervening years he gives his address as Iveagh House. I had heard of this and have passed the building numerous times but on looking it up I was surprised by how nice it was in the 1910's. It wouldn't have been a bad place for someone like Syl to be living.

Isn't if funny the buildings that seemed inconsequential in youth have such importance when attached to an ancestor ;D

Yeah it's weird. I am oddly affected when I pass St James' Hospital as many of my ancestors were admitted to, or died in, the South Dublin Union Workhouse.

I think you should get the actual cert for Sylvester's marriage to see if his Dad's occupation gets you any leads.
Interesting ~ there is a Sylvester Doyle on GV in Ballynamuddagh, Bray.
If the Doyles were farmers it's possible this could be a Grandad of your Sylvester.
Long Shot but put it in the possible pile !

I know of 5 Silvester Doyles baptised in the county from 1841-1850, the 1847 Bray one I mentioned is the only one with parents' forenames that match, but you're right, lots of baptisms aren't covered in the first place.

Guys you're both amazing, thank you. I am going to do some digging over the weekend with the new info I have. If I start piecing this together those cemetery records could be brilliant Tara. I'll have a look in my folder later and see if I have Syl and Mary's marriage cert and get back to you.

I do have the marriage cert and both fathers are listed as labourers. Not hugely helpful.
