Title: Peter Murdoch and his (complicated) family! Liverpool
Post by: rutht22000 on Sunday 21 June 15 12:59 BST (UK)
This may get confusing so I'm going to be as brief as possible and will try and split up his 2 families that seem to be running at the same time  ;D (apologies in advance!)

Peter was born in 1843 in Rotherhithe, London.  He married Mary Ann Harriett Leftwich on 4 October 1863 at St Paul's in Deptford, London.

Peter & Mary had 9 known children that I have found and know about - Peter, Wallace, McPherson, Robert, David, Joseph, Douglas, Jessie and Garnet all born between 1864 and 1879.  I have traced what happened to all of these children so need no information about them.

All seems fine until around the time Garnet was born in 1879.

Mary is with her children on the 1881 census as a married head of household in Toxteth Park (RG11 3643 52 46).  Peter is nowhere to be seen.

Mary appears the on the following census (again without Peter):

1891 living with her son Wallace and his family in Toxteth Park (RG12 2931 137 35)
1901 living with her sons Peter & Joseph and daughter Jessie in Manchester (RG13 3763 28 48)
1911 living widowed with a grandson Mornington Murdoch in Toxteth Park (RG 14 22247).

She then dies in Manchester in 1926 but is buried in Liverpool (at Toxteth Park).

Then we fall to where is Peter as he dies in Liverpool in 1907.

He is completely missing (as far as I can see) in 1881, but 1891 (RG 12 2957 113 30) he appears in Everton with his daughter Jessie from his marriage to Mary Ann but a new 'wife' Hannah (Hughes, born around 1855/57 in Anglesey) and several more children - Minnie (1878), Charles (1880), Claud (1882) and William (1885) all carrying Murdoch as their name but I can find no evidence that Peter and Hannah ever married or indeed he divorced Mary Ann.

1901 he is a boarder without any of either of his families, living in Fairfield (RG13 3499 127 42).  He dies in 1907.

Hannah in 1901 (RG13 3469 85 37) is with her children in Kirkdale with Minnie, Charles, Claud, William and more children - Garnet (1891) and Mary (1894).  She is still calling herself Murdoch and 'married'.  All the older children are registered as Hughes but Garnet and Mary are registered as Murdoch.

Hannah in 1911 is 'widowed' in Bootle with Garnet and Mary and her married daughter Minnie reporting she has had 10 children from the 'marriage' - 6 living, 4 dead.

Hannah dies in Liverpool in 1926.

I believe that Peter separated from Mary Ann around 1879/81 but that's a guess based on the census returns and children's births.

If I track Hannah back she is Hannah Hughes on the 1881 census (RG11 3662 64 56), 'wife of an accountant' with her children Minnie Hannah M Hughes and Charles Edward (or Charles M dependent on which census you read) Hughes and after that census they all seem to drop Hughes and use Murdoch at least on the census'.

I have found Minnie's christening at St Peter, Liverpool on 13 May 1878, recording parents as Peter and Hannah Hughes, Peter being an accountant.  She could well just have been involved with 2 men called 'Peter' or Peter Murdoch was using Hughes to cover up the paternity.   This is the only christening for the Hughes/Murdoch children that I can find.

I wonder if anyone can find:

Peter in 1881

A divorce between Peter & Mary Ann or a marriage between Peter and Hannah (or indeed if Hannah had a marriage before she took up with Peter Murdoch)

Christenings of any of living Hughes/Murdoch children (bar Minnie as discussed above) and indeed what the M means in Minnie's name.

The 4 deceased Hughes/Murdoch children - they could be registered as Hughes or Murdoch.

Where Hughes/Murdoch children (Mary and Charles) end up after 1911 (I have located the rest of them)

and breathe.....  thank you!  ;D

Peter Murdoch in 1901 (he is a boarder) describes himself as "widower"????

and son Peter describes himself as "Married separated" in one census  - so it seems to run in the family!!!!
