Hello,
William Gibbs b c 1850 in Bletchingley Surrey (1881 census)
I'm trying to find his death.
I've found a William Gibbs who died Jan 1895 in Croydon, Surrey.
How can I confirm this is the same William Gibbs?
Thanks in advance
-
Where was "yours" in 1891?
Is "yours " still alive on 1901? If so, that rules out the death in 1895
Who was the informant on tbe Croydon death? Does that tie up with what you know about "yours"?
Did the Croydon one leave a Will, again does that tie up with your one?
They are my ideas.

Is this the family in Croydon in 1881?

Emma Gibbs 22 Croydon
Robert W. Gibbs 2 Croydon

Yes, that's the William Gibbs I'm interested in. Any info about him I'd love.
I can't find him in the 1891 census.
Thank you everyone for your interest.

The William Gibbs who died in 1895 was 45, so the right age. It sounds correct to me, but you'd need to get the certificate to be certain.
-
Emma and children are still in Lambeth Rd, Christchurch, Surrey in 1891
William is not at home.
(She is wrongley indexed as Masten on Ancestry)
-
I think this is the family in 1891, they have been transcribed with the family above them on Ancestry, but the image shows them as Gibbs. William isn't with them.

Sorry Liz, missed your post. I don't know why Ancestry has them in Christchurch, it is clearly Croydon!
-
Transcription is a right muddle isnt it!
Cant find them in 1901 - yet.
-
I think Fred the 'lodger' is possibly the father of some of the children
-
No evidence to that effect, Ripper! William could well just be working away.

Thank you Lizdb & groom, so where was William in 1891?

Burial 7th Jan 1895
St John, Coulsden
William Gibbs of Hope Cottages, Smitham Bottom, age 45
Oh - we have a slight problem here. Look at this for 1891, especially the address

So either the William who died isn't yours, or your William was leading a double life and was living with another family who were using his name. I'll see if I can find this family in 1881.
-
They are in the 1881 census RG11; Piece: 807; Folio: 90; Page: 24, So it doesn't look as if that death is your William after all I'm afraid.
-
So when did he die?
It is possible (I've been told by one of the family) that he was a bit of a "wrong'un" and possibly an alcoholic.
-
In that case I wonder if he was in the workhouse in 1891? Emma says she is married then, so he obviously hasn't died. I cant find a Gibbs/Mann marriage either before 1901, so possibly she wasn't free to marry.
-
Emma says she is married then, so he obviously hasn't died.
Another possible scenario is that William was in an institution (prison, hospital, asylum, etc.) and enumerated in the census with initials only. Such people can be hard to identify unless a full place of birth and/or distinctive occupation is given.
-
Thank you Bookbox & groom for your interest, you'd think finding a death would be easier than this!
-
Apart from the one we've now discarded, there are no other deaths in Croydon that would fit. It does look as is the family may have broken up before 1891 and he could have gone anywhere. Unfortunately, William Gibbs is not a particularly unusual name.

Thanks again groom for your interest

hi
just joined RootsChat and found this old post of yours re William Gibbs. I was wondering if you had found any information about his death? I am interested in this also, as I can't find any mention of him other than the 1881 census and his marriage certificate in 1878. Fred Mann, the lodger listed in the 1891 census, later moved back to Lincoln, from where he originated, with Emma. The 1901 census has them living in Lincoln with Daisy and Dick - not sure if they are his children or William's but they have all now taken the name Mann. I haven't found any marriage certificate. My husband is descended from Dick Mann (or should it be Dick Gibbs?!), so would love to find out more.

Hi Lizthebizz. I'm actually doing (or trying to do ) this tree for a friend. I had actually come to a "big dead end" Perhaps we could put our heads together? Does the name Carol Willets mean anything to your husband? Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi, yes, Carol Willetts nee Draper is Pete's cousin, daughter of Thomas Draper and Alma Mann.
