Have you found him in any census, and if so what birthplace/birthdate do you glean from there?
What information was given about his age and his father's name & occupation when he married?
-
married Norwich may 29 1865, he was 27yrs and a shoemaker. his father was Robert Cowell
-
This seems to be them in 1841 & 51:
HO107; Piece: 788; Book: 11; Folio: 15; Page: 23
HO107; Piece: 1812; Folio: 50; Page: 10
-
thank you for info
-
Could they have emigrated?
-
No didn't emigrate.
He married Votier 1869 she married again 1871 a man called William Turner, said she was a widow.
But can find no death for Stephen Cowell,
Come to that she married again after Turner but no date.
-
Hi,
Be careful here. I think you may be looking at two separate Alice Marys; Alice Mary VOTIER is a different person to Alice Mary A COELL. It was she who married twice. This may explain why a death record for Stephen COWELL has not been found 1865 – 1871. FreeBMD show these records:
Marriages June qtr 1865 Norwich
Stephen Cowell
Joseph Gardiner
Martha Miller
Alice Mary Votier
Marriages Dec qtr 1868 Hastings
Alice Mary A Coell
Ellen Hoad
William Hooper Nelson
William Richardson
Marriages Dec qtr 1871 Norwich
Alice Mary A Coell
Virtue Leah Gladman
William Turner
Habakkuk Woodcock

Many thanks for putting us right we thought it was a misspelling.
-
But the cowell who married Alice Mary Ann Votier her father was a William and a weaver. When Alice married William Turner her surname was Coell according to her marriage cert.father listed as William and a weaver .......help
-
on both certificates she put her mark, also no employment on either seems a coincidence if its not the same person.
-
We have discarded the hastings marriage as she lived in Norwich.
She was 19yrs when she married Stephen Cowell and a widow at 23yrs.When she married William Turner.Could she be spinning a yarn saying shes a widow I wonder.
-
I can see her in 1871 listed as married but that may not be the case.
I can see a Stephen Cowles death in Mutford 1869 but his age is out.
-
She married William Turner in dec 1871 she was 23 he was 41.
So many different spellings for one name so confusing.
-
I will send off for the Cowles death certificate only way to go I think now we have a possible date
-
just double checked age is wrong he was born 1838
-
The 1869 death appears to be that of Stephen Cowles , a dairyman and poulterer , who hanged himself ( info from the report of an inquest at Lowestoft. )

Hi avotier,
Yes, I’m sorry, you are right in that Alice Voiter who married William Cowell is the same person as Alice Coell who married William Turner, and then went on to marry William Shimmings/Shemmings. I was far too hasty in posting my findings without cross referencing other websites! So far the following has been confirmed for your particular Alice Mary Votier:
1865 Alice Mary Votier married William Cowell (various spellings) Norwich
1871 census Alice Mary Cowal living with her parents, recorded as married
1871 Dec Alice Mary A Coell married William Turner, Norwich
1878 Alice Mary Ann Votier, previous married name Turner, daughter of William Votier, married William Themmings/Shemmings, Hull, Yorks 13 Sep
1881 census, William Shemmings, a merchant seaman, and Alice living in Kingston upon Hull
1911 Alice Shimmings living in Sculcoates with husband (recorded as James); married 34 years; no children
1914 Alice M A Shimmings died Sculcoates, Yorkshire
Regarding the 1868 marriage for Alice M A Coell to William Hooper Nelson, Hastings, Sussex. Whilst freebmd has this marriage recorded as Coell, family search, and consequently Ancestry has it transcribed as William Hooper Nelson (born 1834) and Alice Mary Ann Cock (born 1846)!! Alice Mary Ann Cock/Coell’s father is recorded as William.

-

-

I'm interested in the Shimmings/Shemmings connection, do you know if thats a transcription error or a name change?
