Hi everyone,
For some time now, I've had a huge brickwall with the family of my 3rd great grandfather, Donald McDonald.
It took me a huge effort to find out who he was, owing to the fact that my 2nd great grandfather, James McDonald, was his illegitimate son, however, after consulting many census records and geographical locations, coupled with the given occupation, I was pretty sure this was my man.
He died in Fraserburgh in 1868, which is where he married in about 1844.
I have the names of his parents on his death certificate, who were Hugh McDonald and Henrietta Mathieson, but that's all I have, I have nothing on any of his potential siblings, or anything further back than his parents names.
I was made aware that the Tongue parish records haven't been transcribed a year or two back and when I have tried to search on the usual sites, nothing has come up.
If anyone can help me out, I would be eternally grateful!
Many thanks in advance,
Alex.

Donald Mc Donald
Baptism 28 Jan 1800 LAIRG, SUTHERLAND
Father Hugh Mc Donald
Donald Mcdonald Anne Morrison
Marriage 9 Jun 1844 Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire
Name: William Mc Donald
Born 10 Apr 1857 FRASERBURGH, ABERDEEN
Parents Donald Mc Donald & Ann Morrison
I'm not sure if this will help. I guess the 1805 year of birth may have been on his death record but that is not always accurate.

I think the birth in 1800 is incorrect. I have found on FindMyPast a seamans record for Donald McDonald born Tongue in 1805. It is not clear but indicates he was a fisherman, which is probably why he is not on census below?
1861 - Back Street, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire
Ann McDonald Head Married 42 1819 Durness, Sutherland, Scotland
Catherine McDonald Daughter 14 1847 Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland
Barbra McDonald Daughter 12 1849 Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Elizabeth McDonald Daughter 8 1853 Aberdeenshire, Scotland
William McDonald Son - 4 1857 Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Thanks very much for your replies, really appreciated!
I have Donald in 1861 in Aberdeenshire working away as a lodger, I can't quite remember exactly where right now, but it's definitely him.
I'll have a look for this sea record, very interesting! I know he was an agricultural labourer, but I'll have a look at this one anyway.
I don't think the 1800 birth is him either, he consistently states his place of birth as Tongue, Sutherland.

Hi Alex,
Just wondering how you know Donald was James' father. Where/when was James born & was Donald named on his baptism ???

Hi Annie,
I have the birth record and it says that James was the natural son of Donald McDonald (agricultural labourer) and Mary Pyper, it says he was born at Findon and I found out that the Findon in question was likely to be a now defunct hamlet nestled some way between Gamrie where Mary was from and Fraserburgh where Donald was living and I found him on the 1851 census and he was the only likely candidate, plus it stated on the census 'ag lab' (which I have).
I did have to really comb through census records for this and I was at a loss, until as said, someone mentioned about Findon in Banffshire.
