Parents could be Patrick McMurdo and Susan (surname unknown) - Patrick was a Mariner.

Hi Jan. If you search MCMURDO in here, there are a good number of posts for McMurdo, including Dumfries, you may pick something up in there?
I have a Janet McMurdo from New Cumnock, Ayrshire, married into my Mason Family, also of New Cumnock! I'll check what I have as to her ancestry, don't think I have much, but I'll get back to you on it!

I think you should be looking at Liverpool for this McMurdo family not Wigtownshire. A Grace McMurdo married a Patrick Murphy in 1896 and they can be found on the 1901 census in Liverpool. Patrick was a Sailor and died by drowning in Adelaide Harbour, Australia age 36 in 1910. Grace is a widow in 1911 and died in Liverpool in 1955 age 78.

My feeling is that she was born in Stranraer, possibly soon after he parents came from Ireland. She married and lived the rest of her life in Liverpool (she was my son in laws great grandmother) I was in Stranraer yesterday, and mentioned that I was, and he said that was where she was born. I can't find a birth for her anywhere, but I have her living in 1891 living at 18 Middle Street, with her widowed mother and siblings. I can't find her anywhere in 1881. On 4 Sept 1896 she married Patrick Murphy, ad she died in Kirkdale, Lancashire 18 Mar 1955. Grace's parents were Patrick and Susan McMurdo (don't know Susan's maiden name) and I'm told they were born in Liverpool 1836 but no proof.

Seen the census 1891 where she says she was born Liverpool same as mother and sister Susan
Do you have a copy of her marriage certificate with the fathers name ?
There is a Grace Hannah McMurdie born Preston 1880 father John mother Ellen

We can rule out Grace Hannah McMurdie :(

I think the age for Susan is wrong in 1881! I found the following at 15, Walmsely St, Liverpool in 1871.
Henry Murdo 28, Seaman b.Scotland
Susan 34, Wife b. Liverpool
Susan 5, Dau. b. Liverpool
Henry 2, Son b Liverpool
I think this should be McMurdo as a Henry McMurdo died in 1876 age 30? as well as a Henry McMurdo age 3 in 1872.
The only problem is not finding the birth of Grace or her whereabouts in 1881!

In 1881 she is simply listed as 'Annie' bc.1872. In 1891 she is bc.1873, in 1901 bc.1875. The one consistency is that she was born in Liverpool, not Stranraer.
Her father was Henry McMurdo (as already stated) - her sister Susan's birth was registered as Susan J. McMurdo Dec.1866 Liverpool, brother Henry (who died 1872) registered Sept.1869 Liverpool. Cannot find Grace's birth at all, nor her parents marriage.
However, Liverpool Crew Lists show her father Henry was bc.1842/3 Wigton - one record has Pt. 'something' so I'm wondering if this was Portpatrick?
As family were Catholic it makes them a little harder to find.
This could well be the parents marriage:
Henry McMurdy and one of the possible spouses is a Susannah Robbins in Mar.qtr.1862 Liverpool.

The Crew List in 1863 has Henry McMurdy 21 born Port William which is in Mochrum Parish. Later he is recorded as McMurdo.
There is a Henry McMurdy age 3 born Mochrum in 1841 Glentriplock, Mochrum with father James 30 and mother Mary 20(b Ireland. He is 12 in 1851 again b Mochrum at Hill Top, Leswalt with mother Mary 34, James absent! Age seems a little young however compared to Crewlists?
Henry McMurdy did marry Susannah Robbins at Liverpool Registry Office in 1862 on Lancashire BMD
Interesting although not totally convincing.

Everything point's to Grace being born in Liverpool if this is the same family ???. Was Patrick named as her father on her marriage certificate ?..There are a few Liverpool Catholic baptisms with the parent's named Henrici McMurdo Susannah Robinson /Robbins ..Also a burial for another son James Henry McMurdo died 1880 address 13,Cemaes ..
A marriage for Susan McMurdo in 1886 to Thomas Dwyer they are both in the 1891 census

I think this is the right one. Her husband died in Australia in 1910, and I can't find a 1911 census.
I think my son in law must be wrong about Stranraer - but need birth cert for proof. I think the visitor is her Mother.

Ok, I can send you that 1901 census in the morning, grandchildren asleep in the bedroom where my PC is and I suspect there'll be a knock on the door any minute. I'm on my iPad on the moment, and can't change the name of the image on it, so will have to send it in the morning!

I believe that Henry McMurdy/McMurdo was born in Mochrum to James McMurdy andMary McAnally.
They also had a daughter Grace Hannah McMurdy born 20 Feb 1848 and baptised 12 March 1848 at St Joseph's, Stranraer. I assume Henry named his own daughter after her. This may explain the Stranraer confusion?
Mary McAnally died 11 April 1858 age 40 in Stranraer with son Henry McMurdo the informant. She was still married but I cannot find husband James after 1841?
I am still puzzled as to why we cannot find the birth record of Grace!

If you look for Grace H Murphy b Liverpool 1875 you will find her on the 1911 census no sign of the mother now ???
