Title: Lowe Family
Post by: Torwoodlee on Wednesday 15 July 15 22:03 BST (UK)
Hello,

I have found a William R Lowe aged 35, his wife Jessie, 28 and their son Granville, aged 2, in the 1901 census in Dover, Kent.  Jessie and Granville were originally from Sutherland.  I can not find them in the 1911 census, can anyone help?
They were a long way from home living in Dover but William's job was an Inspector of Harbour Works according to his marriage licence but on the 1901 census it listed him as a 'foreman mason' and possibly the word 'aider' written after that; haven't quite deciphered it yet.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you know when and where they all died and when and where Granville married?

Trying to work backwards.

I know that Jessie and Granville died in Dingwall, Ross-shire but I'm not sure of the dates as of yet, I'm working on that.  Apparently Jessie was involved in a shipping disaster in the 1930s and survived; I'm working on finding out more information about that as well.  I was told that both Jessie and Granville were born in Golspie which is in Caithness now but I believe it used to be a part of Sutherland (considering the Duke of Sutherland had his stately home there and still stands).  I'm not sure where and when Granville married but his descendants, including his granddaughter, settled in Dingwall.  Apparently, as time went on, the family dropped the e at the end of the Lowe name.
Carole, I didn't realise this, thank you for pointing it out.

Since the restrictions don't apply to the 1911 Scottish Census , have you looked at GRENVILLE LOW age 12 in Golspie Sutherland ?
Second person showing as Jessie Low age 36.

Thank you again ev!  I did not know the 1911 restrictions do not apply to the Scottish census.  That's good for those researching Scottish ancestry to know!  I'll have a look.   :D

The Duke of Sutherland was George Granville Leveson-Gower - is it possible that the man you seek was an employee working on his estate, or the son of an employee?
