Hi there
With the help of this forum I have managed to trace one side of my family thank you so much :). Now I am back again after several years of trying to trace my maternal side I am trying to clarify if my Grandfather Walter Henry Jones born 1884 (I have death cert and marriage cert) if his mother is Maria Jones formerly Fox born in Australia or have I gone off track somewhere????? Your help would be much appreciated thank you

The 1901 census in Leicester gives POB Australia.

Her parents might have gone out there mining and then returned, people were much more mobile than we give them credit for.

1891 gives Melbourne Australia British subject. Under Jone.

I have ancestors who married in London in 1857,by 1858 they were in Sydney.
Mum and the 2 girls came back,and the girls stayed here with grandma.
Mum died in Sydney in 1866. They weren't rich people by any means.

So it's perfectly possible for her to have been born out there.

Looks like she is with her mother and siblings in Leicester in 1881 mother Hannah Norton born Norwich Norfolk, could be second marriage.

Maria and two of her siblings were born in Australia (all surname Fox); a younger brother (surname Norton) was b Leicester.

Another point to consider when faced with conundrums like this is to consider the occupations of the fathers.

While looking at Martindale Hall ( Picnic at Hanging Rock Fame) in Clare/Mintaro SA I read that over 60 of the builders were brought out from England to do the work and most returned once the job was done.

A Hannah Norton of Lee St died 1888; her age doesn't match the 1881 census, but actually if the 1881 age was correct, Hannah would have been only 15 when the eldest of her listed children was born, so it might not be accurate.

This is the plot in Welford Rd in which this Hannah Norton is buried, I don't know if the names of the other people also there might give any clues:

Marriage 4/7/1871 Norwich father's name given on Family Search as William Louis?

Was Louis her maiden name or perhaps Lewis or did they not give her fathers full name on the index?

You could try this newspaper site...I've found lots of stuff on some of my ancestors using this site.....Maybe there was a birth family notice

Thanks everyone for your prompt replies. I have tried the Australian newspapers there is a lot to get through but will keep looking :) As far as I know Walter was born in Leicester. It looks like Hannah was married to Henry Fox (farmer) I assume he died out n Australia and Hannah returned to England with the children remarried Mr Norton but in the 1881 census she is on her own with the children has her second husband died?
