Title: Overton baptisms - Joseph Edwards (abt 1820) and siblings
Post by: Deirdre784 on Monday 27 July 15 22:25 BST (UK)
Does anyone know where I might find baptisms at Overton? The ones on FindMyPast seem to end in 1812 and I'm looking for Joseph Edwards, born around 1820, son of John and Sarah Edwards (nee Roberts), who were married on 8 Feb 1817 in Ruabon, and any possible siblings.

Joseph is consistently recorded as born in Overton despite living in Chirk from 1841 until his death in 1879.

Many thanks,

Deirdre

There is this Baptism on Family Search where Overton is wrongly given as Overton Cheshire!

Hi

Findmypast has the baptism image in Cheshire Diocese Of Chester Bishop's Transcripts Baptisms 1576-1906 The BTs are at Cheshire Record Office.

Thanks Andy, just found Joseph and a couple of siblings on FindMyPast, thanks to WRJ finding Overton in Cheshire!! :)

Edited to add: so Overton was in Cheshire at the time, bad enough to have moved districts but to move country  ;D

Hi

I don't know whether Overton was ever in Cheshire but it was in the Diocese of Chester which would explain why the BTs are at Cheshire Archives at Chester. I suspect that Familysearch and Findmypast have put Overton as Cheshire purely because that Archive was the source of the images.

I was going to attach a clip from George Edwards' baptism from 1826, in the hope that someone with local knowledge could work out the abode, but I can't add an attachment :'(

Sorry I haven't been here to comment on this.As has been stated the reason that Overton is wrongly given as being in Cheshire is that one time it was indeed in the Diocese of Chester as opposed to St Asaph. Both for geographic and political purposes,Overton was never in Cheshire.I will be very interested indeed when you get to discussing possible siblings for Joseph's father.

William Russell Jones.

You should be able to add , just click on Attachments and other options , then browse your files,
Could it be the image file size is too large. The maximum individual size 500KB

Found what appears to be John and Sarah's marriage but nothing else at the moment :( though one of the witnesses was a Richard Edwards. If the marriage is right, John was from the parish of Llangollen.

No real idea of their age.... just been working through the children to see if I can find John or Sarah with either of them in later years.

No it's really small, I'm not given an option to attach a file at all. Could it be because it's in the lookups folder?

Under 'Attachments and other options' I get ...
notify me of replies by email (which is ticked)
don't use smileys
return to this topic (ticked).

It is strange as I've certainly been able to add attachments to other posts  ???

Here's what I believe to be the marriage of John and Sarah:
8 Feb 1817 at Ruabon, John, of the parish of Llangollen, and Sarah of the parish of Ruabon, by licence. Witnesses: Richard Edwards and Elizabeth Roberts (all signed)

I've found some info on Joseph and his 4 siblings:
Frances, born 18 May 1817, baptised 12 Oct 1817 in Overton
Joseph, born 23 April 1820, baptised 30 Dec 1821, married Sarah Davies nee Roberts at Ruabon on 21 Oct 1839, died May 1879
Richard and Thomas, twins, born 23 April and baptised 2 June 1822 - Richard married Sarah Allen in Overton, had 9 or more children and died in Overton in 1894. Thomas, possibly in the workhouse in Wrexham in 1891, but nothing else found so far.
George, baptised on 8 Jan 1826, married Eliza Henshall in Shropshire in 1850, had 6 or more children, last seen as a widower in 1901 aged 74 in Whitchurch, Shropshire (recorded as deaf from birth).

No obvious burials in Overton for John or Sarah (or daughter Frances), but maybe they moved away and had more children. Neither appears to be with any of their children. No luck looking for John and Sarah in 1841 or 1851 but difficult without knowing their age or place of birth. I've also looked for John born Llangollen but nothing there either.

Of course there is always the possibility that John and Saraak Edwards ma have been living in the Erbistock Parish in 1841 as both Parishes are barely half a mile apart.Unfortunately though,if that is the case you are doomed as to never finding them.Apart from a portion of the Wrexham Town the 1841 Census for the Wrexham area is missing I'm afraid.

Thanks WRJ, good to know, though the 1841 isn't very helpful really for age, relationship or place of birth  :)

I was hoping to find them in 1851 as they might have only been in their 50s so will keep looking for now. I did find a widowed Sarah in Staffordshire giving place of birth as Llangollen, which I'll look at again.
