Hi Folks,
Once again another photo from WW1,
Can you identify where this was taken and what regiment it is ?
Is it American or British..?
Thanks for your help ?
Zoot

...again, up closer...
We thought it was the Royal Marines ????
-
Hi, it does look like the cap badge is a globe with a laurel around it, much like the Royal Marines, it may be a bit later than WW1 tho' :-\
Look's to be a photograph taken at the end of a course or training event, I'm sure someone will be along to add to my comment's.
Frank.

They're wearing the pre-economy tunic so before 1916.
There are no medal ribbons on display so possibly Territorials.
Some might say they look too happy to be regulars but I wouldn't.
-
Are they British ?
-
Hi, yes, they are British, Obviously I'm not much good at dating ;D
Frank.
-
Okay...They Are British ?
I was told they were American...but British fits better in my thought line...
Ok Frank, i am looking for an opinion....can you tell me if this is the same uniform.....Sorry .. :P
-
They look so happy because they have just had the Pay Parade. ;D
-
I would "Hazard a guess" and say that, yes, they are the same uniform (Tunic), the buttons align as per the other photograph and the collar is very, very similar if not the same, (How's that for covering my back ;D )
Where's jim1 when we need him :)
Frank.
-
I say royal marines
-
Still Territorials or Regulars ?
-
Anyone recognise the Barracks/Location ?
Thanks John.
-
Looking at it again I don't think Territorials.
The ordinary men are all young & there's no old sweats in this which you would expect to see with a VR Coy. or even a Regular Coy.
Cadets perhaps.
Eastney Barracks?
-
That's a good shout jim1, there is a Royal Marine barracks at Eastney isn't there, I spent a hellish week there when I was in the Sea Cadets :(
Frank.
-
The officer was conspicuous in his different colour uniform?
T,hey made it easy for snipers to spot the officers, didn't they?
-
The cap badge is very distinctive. Could it be Kings Own Scottish Borderers ? http://www.mycollectors.co.uk/StockPhotos/badges/Cap-Badges/kings-own-scb-cap-badge-qc.jpg
-
My money is still on the Royal Marines.
Frank.
-
In follow up to the above it looks a very good match for this.
Regards
Frank.

The soldier that John is interested in is William Harrison Watt, born Airdrie on 28 October 1881. There are no Watts in the Royal Marines Registers of Service Index, 1842-1925 with that birthdate.

Ah! right, I was not aware of that as it is not on this thread ::)
That does not alter the fact that I see RM cap badges ;D

Hi John, that puts a different light on it, it may well be as ShaunJ say's the KOSB ;D although the centre of the badge looks to stand out like a RM badge.

Guys...
The photocard was taken by a J.C Lawrence, 22 Elmhurst Road, Gosport.
Is this Royal Marine Territory ?

Ought to consider Suffolk Regiment. KOSB, didn't they wear glengarries and tam o'shanters or whatever.
-
I've just read that, Quote:-
"..........................an insight into the important role that Gosport played in the Great War both as a garrison town and as a base for the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Harbour."
Here's your photographer,

Thanks Frank,
I will email them with copies of the photo to see if they can give me any further information on the picture.
On the reverse of the photo it states "To Bob...from Bill ......Taken during field training....."
Now i have just spoke to my father and he says that " Bob" is Williams brother in law Bobby Bryden who was in the machine gun corps....

Good evening,
I would go with Royal Marines as well. But location wise I'm not sure, the building doesn't match with what I know of Eastney Barracks or Forton Barracks. (Gosport home of the Royal Marine Light Infantry for 75 years).
This could be pre war or WW1, they are wearing the 1908 equipment which was in use until 1919. They are all smartly dressed which I would take to mean regulars rather than Territorials or new army.
So maybe a training exercise away from home barracks. Chatham still had Marine Barracks at that time.

I can't thank all of you enough for the searching and hard work you have all put in.
One question is....
Does every soldier who served in a the military become entitled to a pension back in the 1914 era ?
On Williams death cert, it states that he was an army pensioner.
Could this be because he got gassed during WW1..?
Or am i clutching at straws again..? ???

John
There was a pension paid to Officers and men who were disabled or invalided as well as other pensions to widows etc, so yes it could well have been, there is a bit of information on the link below from the National Archives.
