Hi,
Excuse me if I get I get this wrong as it is my first post.
I am looking for my elusive gt grandfather, his name was Joseph Cartwright and according to the 1911 census was born in Willenhall, Staffordshire. This is the only census I can find him in, he is on there with wife Elizabeth and daughter Gladys(my grandmother) along with two others.
On his marriage cert to Elizabeth(Lizzie) he states that his father is William Cartwright(locksmith journeyman). The only Joseph Cartwright I can find with a father William with the same occupation is on the 1901 but was born in 1893 so not this one.
But what caught my attention on the same 1901 census is that there is a boarder named Joseph Wootton, born in 1873, with the same occupation I have for my grandfather. I am probably being a bit far fetched here but could he have possible changed his name from Wootton to Cartwright? and how do I try and rule it out (or in).
This is a brick wall I have been trying to crack for a couple of years now, and any help would be much appreciated.
If anymore information is needed let me know.
Thankyou for reading
Yvonne

William Joseph Cartwright married Mary Ann Davis 1879
Its looking Joseph must be illegitimate I think that the William Wootton on the earlier census is his grandfather finding his mother and how he ties into the Cartwright side might be a bit tricky

Thankyou all so much,
So I can assume that I am on the right track thinking that Joseph Wootton changed his name to Cartwright?
Would the next step be to find a birth registration for Joseph Wootton, and get birth certificate?

The birth was registered September quarter of 1873 Wolverhampton 6b 594
I suspect his mother is Ellen - she married John Woolaston 21.9.1874 St Matthews Wolverhampton - her fathers name isn't listed

Leah Cartwright was the second wife of Solomon they married in 1889 and had daughter Leah in 1890.
His first wife and mother of John James was Ann Tranter whom he married in 1875.
I have come to the conclusion there are two Joseph Wootton/Wooton's around at the same time one was basically from Wolverhampton, and one from Willenhall (which is the one I am after I believe) its just now trying to sort them out one born 1873, and one born 1874 according to census.
Thanks for your input much appreciated

Leah also had a son George Edward baptised 7.9.1885 at St Stephens Willenhall (see Wolverhampton Archives site http://www.wolverhamptonhistory.org.uk/resources/indexes/index.html?sid=e53f323bd5c646a2a6728bec9603743d) looks like he died September quarter of the same year but I can't see a burial
I cant find baptisms for any of Edward and Martha's children

Thought I would update you on this quest.
Well I have only this last week sent for the birth certificate of Joseph, and at first thought it might be the wrong one, then on closer inspection realised that it is the correct one.
Born: 18 August 1873, Newhall St, Willenhall Name:JOSEPH Father: William Wootton Mother: Martha Wootton formerly TAYLOR Fathers Occ: Locksmith Reg by Martha Wootton, Newhall St, Willenhall.
Martha's Husband Edward died in 1863, and I believe William Wootton was also a widower, I
cannot find a marriage between the two so presume there wasn't one. Martha died in 1879 when Joseph was 6, so after his father died he was passed around relatives. He ended up on the 1901 census with William J Cartwright who I now believe was his half brother. He married my Gt grandmother in the name of Joseph Cartwright, as I presume he took his mothers married name.
Am really hoping this is correct and not just fitting because I want it to.
Thanks for reading and helping

Hi yes that is what I have researched Martha Taylor married Edward Cartwright in 1853 he died in 1863 so Martha was a widow The jobber's were her grandparents. William Wootton was married to Sarah but there were no children from the marriage. Sarah died leaving William a widower. Henry Taylor is Martha's brother.Martha and William must have got together sometime and had Joseph. On Joseph's birth cert Martha states her name as Wootton formerly Taylor, all the pieces fit together that they were all related.
Thanks
