Title: Andrew Penson - Looking for his marraige c. 1716
Post by: venelow on Monday 17 August 15 21:06 BST (UK)
Hi Rootschatters

I am looking for assistance in finding the marriage of Andrew Penson and Ann(e) ??? circa 1716.

Andrew Penson was born at Church Aston about 1690. On 7 Nov 1718 a daughter Mary was baptized for Andrew and Ann Penson at Sheriff Hales. Four more children followed then after Nov 1727 he appears to have moved back to Church Aston where a further four children were baptized. He appears to have died at Church Aston, being buried there on July 15 1773.

I have never been able to find the marriage of Andrew and Ann although there are a few trees that state her m.s. was Addenbrooke and there was a family of that name living at Sheriff Hales.

While he was at Sheriff Hales, Andrew Penson is noted in the Register as being a Churchwarden for a couple of years but I don't know what his actual occupation was.

If anyone has knowledge of this family or can find the marriage I would love to hear from them.

Thanks for reading.

Lots of Penson wills and inventories at Lichfield Record Office but mostly from the Lilleshall area. Only Andrew listed died in 1707 but may be a link to yours.

Thanks for responding bristolloggerheads

The Pensons I am looking at did come from Lilleshall. Andrew's father was Joseph Penson 1667 - 1743
I believe the Andrew who died in 1707 was the uncle of the Andrew I am looking at.
I don't know if Joseph left a Will. I have not been able to find a catalogue of Lichfield wills online. The Lichfield RO site seems pretty minimal. I could not access the Catalogue link but I don't know if this is because I don't live in the UK. I did find an old page online that states they are hoping to get information on line by 2007.

I have located the PCC Will of Anne Addenbrooke's father John but unfortunately he died, a widower, in 1710 so there are no clues there except that Anne's married sister Elizabeth and her husband John Allport were charged with her care and maintenance so there would be some incentive to get her married off as quickly as possible. Anne was about thirteen when her father died.

As I said, there are trees online that state Andrew Penson married Anne Addenbrooke but nobody cites a marriage date. Evidence I have found so far is circumstantial; Firstly, Andrew's wife Anne died in 1790 at Church Aston and was noted to be 96 years old. Anne Addenbrook was baptized in Jan 1696/7 which makes 96 pretty close to her age of 93 if indeed she was the Anne who married Andrew Penson.

Secondly Andrew Penson and Dorothy Allport were witnesses to a Deed, Dorothy, being a daughter of Anne's sister the aforementioned Elizabeth the wife of John Allport.

Maybe these nuggets of information are what other researchers are basing there information on. I have contacted one researcher but had no response so far.

Thanks again

As you can see Joseph did leave a will.

Andrew 5 August 1707 (no inventory)
Joseph 8 Nov 1743 (no inventory)
Margaret 12 Oct 1727 (no inventory)
Robert 20 April 1737
Thomas 12 April 1678
Thomas 28 April 1687
William 4 Oct 1667 (no inventory)

Dates are when the will was exhibited (not when it was written) but this is the date you will need to quote to Lichfield RO if you want a copy. Index is here: http://www.staffsnameindexes.org.uk/default.aspx?&Mode=Details&Index=C

Hi Peter

Thank you so much for your reply and the URL for the index of Wills. That is most helpful. Forgive the tardiness of my response but I was away from my computer on a short vacation in Northern Ontario this past week.

Hello Again Rootschatters

In case anyone else has an interest in this problem, I have still not found Andrew Penson's marriage or any definite evidence of his wife Anne's maiden surname.

I have seen the Will of Andrew's father Joseph Penson 1667-1743. It was written on the 13th of July 1730 and the date of probate was the 3rd November 1743.

Joseph describes himself as a Yeoman of Lilleshall, Shropshire. To his sons Andrew, Thomas, James and Joseph (listed in order of birth) he leaves twelve pence.

All of the residue of his estate, goods, chattels, personal estate and the tenant right and possession of several messuages and tenements held of Lord Gower are left to his youngest son John whom he appoints executor.
No other relatives or kinsfolk are mentioned. The names of the witnesses hold no obvious clues.

So not much progress in the last five years.  I did find a marriage at Lilleshall on 20th Feb 1723/4 between Mr William Clemson and Mrs Anne Addenbrooke, which by the use of Mrs (Mistress), could have been the daughter of John Addenbrooke. However that marriage was by a Licence which stated she was a widow. I have not found her deceased husband yet but most likely her maiden name was not Addenbrooke.

I would appreciate hearing any information or suggestions regarding this problem. Thanks for reading.

There's a possible will for John Alport in 1717, and if his widow remarried to Francis Taylor then possibilities include letters of administration for a Francis Taylor of Church Aston, Yeoman in 1757 or an Elizabeth Taylor of Cherrington, Widow in 1739.

Hi Mutchall

Thank you for your reply. You appear to have had as much luck in finding the marriage as I have!

My Penson line starts with the maternal line of my 2 X Great Grandmother who was born in Wolverhampton.
Prior to that these Pensons seem to have been in the mid part of east Shropshire for many generations.  I have Andrew's father Joseph and also his father Thomas Penson (my 8 X Great Grandfather) born about 1640. I am in the process of investigating Thomas' parents.

Elizabeth Alport nee Addenbrooke did marry Francis Taylor in 1719. I found three daughters but two of them died. The probate record you suggested for Francis Taylor states that his brother John handled the Administration of the Estate. I believe that Elizabeth's burial is the one recorded at Sherriff Hales on February 3rd 1736/7. Elizabeth the wife of Fran: Taylor. There does not seem to be a probate record for her.

Thank you for your interest in this matter.

Hi Garstonite

Unfortunately the link you gave does not have the information I am seeking. I know Andrew Penson married someone called Ann(e) but no surname or date or place of marriage is stated in the extract. I have tried looking for the researcher mentioned. I found a site that mentioned her but my security program put up a warning against.

The mystery continues.

Dear Roots Chatters,

As the original poster of this thread, I am pleased to say I have now discovered some hard evidence that proves that the maiden name of Andrew Penson's wife Ann was Addenbrooke and that she is the Ann baptized in Jan 1695/6 the daughter of John Addenbrooke and Dorcas his wife.

In the PCC Will of Andrew Swift of Shrewsbury, written in 1749, probate 1751, he leaves a bequest to Ann the wife of Andrew Penson. He calls her his Kinswoman and confirms her identity by stating that she was the daughter of John Addenbrook Gent. of Little Hales.

Andrew Swift gave the Pensons one hundred pounds for the use and benefit of themselves and their children.

Andrew Swift was Ann Penson's cousin. His father was also called Andrew.
Andrew Swift's mother was Ann Addenbrooke the daughter of John Addenbrooke and Joyce Bowdler and the sister of Ann Penson's father, John Addenbrooke of Little Hales.

I hope this information will be of use to other Penson/Addenbrooke researchers and remove any doubts about who Ann was.

Sincerely
Venlow

Congratulations!  Always so satisfying to solve a problem in such a definite way.

Thanks mckha489.

It was very satisfying. BUT ......  it just raises more problems with Joyce Bowdler including the marriage of Joyce Bowdler to John Addenbrook which many trees on line state took place in 1656 at Barrow Salop. Of course the 1650s are always a problem.

However I can't find any parish records for Barrow in the 1600s except three pages stating in 1611 which are mostly illegible. Her second marriage to Andrew Langley is stated in many trees to have taken place on June 19th in 1666 at Broseley Salop but there is no such record in the Broseley Parish Register.  Many trees state a death/burial for her on 11 Aug 1708 but no place is stated in the online trees except for a few that say she died at Cork Ireland. I think that is a mix up with another Joyce.

Oh well, back to my utterly maddening but fascinating pastime. I think I now have enough brick walls to build a house.
