Hi,
I'm hoping someone out there can help me find out if my 3x great grandfather George Telford/Tedford came from Tartaraghan. I know he married in St Paul's church Tartaraghan (Anglican) on 27 Nov 1829 to Abigail Benson, and the family lived around Derrykeeran/Derrykeevan but would like to know if he came from there or another county. He died on 9 Mar 1884 in Derrykeevan and he was a farmer/weaver.
I'd love to know when & where he was born etc.
Thanks,
Daryl

The marriage record should indicate where he came from and also name his father. There are no Telfords in Derrykeeran or Derrykeevan in the Freeholder Records, but then, there aren't any Bensons either. I've seen the name spelled Thelford as well in the records.
There is a James Telford in Derryore in 1832 as a tenant of Col. Verner who was a large land holder in Tartaraghan parish. Your George does not seem to appear in these records, likely because his land holding was not worth the required 40 shillings.

Hi Eileen,
Would his o.p.r marriage entry mention his father's name ? Where do I get a copy of an o.p.r marriage cert for St. Paul's ?
I found George in the 1864 Griffiths Valuation today, in Derrykeeran. It looks like he rented a house, and maybe some land attached to it.
I also found Robert Benson, in Derrykeevan who rented land as far as I can work out. I think he also appears in the 1834 Tithe Applotments too.
Regards,
Daryl

The parish records are available through PRONI. You can also try contacting the church directly to see if they kept copies.
The 1834 Tithes show James Teaford, Thos. Teaford, Christopher & Nicholas Tedford all in Derrykeevan. There is a Robert Telford in Cloncarish & Derrycor.

For a 1829 Church of Ireland marriage record I would expect to see date, names of brides and grooms and possibly officiant's name. It's not common to get a townland and fathers but perhaps you'll be lucky.

Hi Rathmore,
Thanks for finding that entry, although I've already found David (George's son) and his wife
In the 1901 census.
I don't think George had a son called Joseph that I'm aware of.
I've requested a copy of George & Abigail's marriage cert so hopefully it might mention George's father.
I wonder if there are parish records for Tartaraghan, pre 1829 which could shed light on wether George and his family came from Derrykeeran.
Regards,
Daryl
