Hi ,
Scotlandspeople has a death for a Thomas John Stewart 1965 Caerlaverock Dumfries , born c1883 , but it's not available online until next year.
As Annie suggests a marriage certificate could help you get further back.

Have you tried 'Scotlands People'?
You can look up births, marriages, deaths (BMD) on that. It's pay-per-view but reasonable.

Is any family available to ask about things?

Becky,
Does it say what he was a "Master" of ???
I would suggest you look at census info. as the year for his birth could differ.
The age given at time of death was by the informant which may of course be a bit out but would tie in with the info. re the death index & MI.
I'm not saying your wrong or that my find is correct......... but does need to be checked.
The marriage cert. (a must) will give a more accurate age as it's the word of Thomas himself.

As I have explained on your thread re. your Nan - Annie Louisa Stewart b.1915 - her Mum Elizabeth had just one brother - he was indeed named Thomas John but was born prior to the marriage of his parents and registered in 1882 under his mothers maiden name of 'Stitt' - after his parents marriage he became Stewart.
So, he would therefore be your 2 x gt. uncle, if I've worked it out correctly and eventually raised your Nan!
A bit disconcerting for us trying to help you - you said in your other thread you'd no idea where in Dumfriesshire they came from when apparently you did. Although lived in Greenbrae both he and Elizabeth were born in Closeburn.
