Hi
Can anyone tell me if the Wemyss family were actually Indian or English?
I would be very interested in any photos.
Many thanks

Hi
Which Wemyss family? The English 1911 index has 220 entries for that surname - 7 of whom were born in India

From the website of the British India Society. Type in Wemyss. In Default Search select "Exact Matches Only"

Was there any special reason you know of for thinking they might have been English rather than Scottish?

A tantalising snippet of an MI at Dehra Dun
"SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF JAMES WEMYSS BORN 4TH MAY 1776. DIED 22ND AUGUST 1849 ENTERED BENGAL CIVIL SERVICE IN 1796. COLLECTOR AT CAWNPORE. APPOINTED INTERPRETER AND ..."

The 4th May birthdate tallies with this 1778 baptism in Wemyss, Fife;

This has all been discovered before. It's an old Scottish family. http://genealogy.links.org/links-cgi/readged?/home/ben/camilla-genealogy/current+c-chart25899+2-2-0-1-0
So I'm not really understanding Dawn's question.

Hi to All
Many thanks for all the information, it is the right James Wemyss, he was born in Fife in Scotland, he married my 5th great aunt and went to India. I was wondering if any of the childrens wifes and husbands were Indian, I look like no one in any of my family sides, I have dark hair and dark eyes and trying to find some photos them to see if I am like any of them
Many thanks

Really sorry guys, only found that out tonight

Hi Dawn,
My family are Wemyss' from India but originally from Scotland as are all(?) Wemyss'. I have Anglo Indian heritage myself but have found that mixed race marriages were not often recorded so it's difficult to trace you're ancestry on the Indian side.
My family are a different branch to yours but I have recorded on my website many Wemyss' with a link to India which you may find useful. http://www.wemyss.me.uk (http://www.wemyss.me.uk)
