Title: George Liddy
Post by: City Hall on Friday 28 August 15 14:02 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am trying to find a family relative in the 1940 US census. His name is George Liddy , born Ireland 1909. I can locate him in the 1920 Us census age 10 living with his parents in Cincinnati( and I can locate his death in Cincinnati in 1975), but not in the 1940 census.
The nearest I can get to him is a George Liddy, lodging in 66th Street, New York, occupation policeman, born Ireland. This George Liddy gives his age as 27(mine would be 30).

Am I being stupid and just not finding my George Liddy in Cincinnati, or is this him in New York?
A New York cop in the family, wouldn't that be great?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Paul.

I don't think that is him in New York.

A couple hints. The Ohio death index has his middle initial as "P". and was married.

His United States World War II Army Enlistment Records have him listed as living in Cincinnati, Ohio and married in 1942.

Hi Paul,

I agree with RJ137.  George P. is listed with his father George the paver in the 1936 Cincinnati Directories.
Liddy, George, granite paver, 1351 Pendelton
Liddy, George P. jr., meter tester, same address

Cheers,
DB

George P. was also listed as a meterman in the 1958 Cincinnati city directory.  His home was at 2942 Cleinview av.

There was a 1940 U.S. census but the U.S. didn't enter the War until after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec.1941.

Hi,
Thanks for all for the quick replies.
Does the enlistment record supplied by R J confirm he served in WW2 or does it mean if he is  called up his rank will be Private?

Thanks.
Paul.

The Dept. of Veterans Affairs file says he enlisted on 22 Jul. 1942 and was released on 5 Dec. 1945.

Thanks Shelly,
How cool!!
For a wee boy from Belfast(getting on a bit nowadays)having an American G. I. in the family is just as exciting as a New York cop.

Once again I am asking about a family ancestor about whom I know very little.
George Liddy was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 17th September 1908.
He emigrated to USA in 1916, aged 7 or 8, and his parents settled in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He married Mary C Hoban.
They are both buried in St Joseph's new cemetery, Cincinnati.
George died on 6th November 1975 aged 67.
Mary died on 8th July 2001 aged 88.

I cannot find a marriage record for them, but this may be because the records are not on-line yet.
I can find no evidence of any children from the marriage, but would love to be proved wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Paul.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

That George Liddy is my grandfather who was born in Tulla, Ireland.  He passed away in Boston, Massachusetts in the 80s.

There are only 2 Geoge Liddy births under Tulla district in the civil registrations on Irish Genealogy (does not include births less than 100 years old)-
One in 1879 (son of Patrick Liddy & Mary Halloran)-

other in 1887 (son of James Liddy & Catherine McGrath)-

Hi Kzeleniak, if your grandfather (RIP) was in his 70s when he passed away in the 1980s this is probably his details listed below.I don't know if you already have this information but just in case you don't.

George Liddy born 1st October 1910 at Cragnoe, Tulla , County Clare, Ireland to George Liddy, a farmer and Bridget (Moloney) Liddy.
He left Ireland for USA,aged 18, on 18th March 1928, sailing from Cobh (Queenstown), County Cork on board the Carmania.
He appears to to have travelled with 18 year old Patrick O'Dea, also from Tulla.
His father paid for his ticket.
He was going to stay with his uncle James Liddy in Room 1101, 25 Broad Street, New York.
He was described as being 5ft 8 ins tall with fresh complexion, dark hair and blue eyes.

Regards,
Paul.
