Title: Windows 10 1 Month on! Is it the right operating system for me?
Post by: Calverley Lad on Friday 28 August 15 19:35 BST (UK)
So most of us have had Windows 10 on our machines for 1 month.
Do you find that things are working out to your satisfaction?
My 2 identical I5 laptops boot up/shut down very quickly, but applications are running slower than when I had Windows 7.

Post by: mike175 on Friday 28 August 15 21:18 BST (UK)
I do like the faster boot-up time than windows 7. I have disabled or turned off most of the windows 10 'features' as I have no need for them, preferring the open source alternatives in most cases. In fact I am hardly aware that I'm using 10. I guess I'm not really the target audience MS were thinking of when they tried to beat Android at their  own game. I just don't like someone else trying to organise my computing life. And with our sluggish 1Mb broadband the 'always online' cloud-based stuff just takes forever to do anything. Even so, I do like the automatic synchronisation of the OneDrive folders which happens in the background while I'm doing other things, instead of patiently waiting while files upload via the browser.

I haven't noticed any programs running more slowly under 10, but Firefox and Thunderbird seemed to have a few problems for a while. After several recent updates they appear to be working fine now.

Everything worked with 10 except my ancient Kodak scanner which wouldn't work under 7 either, but I purchased VueScan which has solved that problem.

All in all I'm quite happy with Windows 10 on my PC. I opted out on the laptop which I had only recently upgraded to 7, thinking I would have a fallback postion if all went belly up with 10. So far I haven't needed it.

Just switched my new Laptop (HP Pavilion 360 Convertible) from 8.1 to 10.

Generally - with windows 8 it seems like I had a leg in both camps - the old desktop paradigm and the new - swipe friendly UI. It was irritating (not annoying) to switch back and forth.

Now with W10 it kind of feels like I finally have both. Not suggesting that you should update, only that although it is a paradigm shift it is a fairly simple one to deal with.

Note, however, this laptop has a 64 bit Core i5 and 128Gb flash drive and 8Gb RAM. I cannot speak for some of the older systems that I suspect many of you have.

My FTM 2011 won't open. A message comes up that I need to go to "tools" and "compact" the file (?) OK where are the tools and why do I need to compact the file?
Help!!!
Apart from that I still prefer IE over Edge...still have it available on my pc.

I have several computers, 3 on Windows 7  x 64 bit, 1 on XP and only one will run Windows 10. Everytime I get updates, the computer crashes, the screen message states that information about the crash is being sent, and once 100% of the information is received by Microsoft the computer will restart on it's own. Up untill now, it stays with a frozen screen, and I have to manualy restart it myself. I have come to the conclusion that the "Free" download is cheaper than to get analysts to sort out the problems, let the public suffer the headaches of the problems, and as each one is found, then Microsoft tries to fix it, not allways sucessfully.
Still not impressed with it.

Having finally decided to download Windows10, I find it won't ! The icon at the bottom of the screen doesn't work - "Get Windows 10" appears briefly in a box and then fades. I tried to download from the MS site but nothing happens in the downloading screen - it just keeps whirring and 0% progress stays on the screen. What am I doing wrong?

One thing I forgot to mention is that I have had a few occasions when Windows 10 has failed to wake from sleep mode and needed a reset, but I did get this with Win7 from time to time. I never got to the bottom of it then so I doubt I will now. I suppose it could be a motherboard BIOS gremlin :-\

Steve,

You may find it will eventually get there if you leave it for a few days. My partner's laptop took a long time, aparently doing nothing.

I thought I'd posted on here but the post doesn't show up.

My husband and I both upgraded to Windows 10, me from 8.1 and husband from 7 and neither of us has had any problems at all.  I deleted lots of apps I didn't want/need, I suggested my husband did the same but I don't know if he has.

Another update this morning, another "Blue screen error, Service Exception Error" Three times a week now.

It's ludicrous.

Windows 10 needs to be renamed.

I just can't get it to download - have tried repeatedly but the "get Windows 10" box fades as soon as it appears and although I've downloded the tool as recommended, when I try to operate it I get the message "problem with startup - restart and try again". Never thought I'd say it, but I'm going to have to stick with Windows 8 after all ( in fact I've bought a Mac instead - much more reliable)

I'm just waiting now to see if there are any 'issues' when Win 10 deletes the old system files later today. Wonder if we'll get any warning that it is our last chance to roll back to the previous system :-\

Thanks for the encouragement Joe - I should have said that the Windows laptop will remain in use as well as my new Mac, so I ought to try to upgrade. I am puzzled where to go from here though - there seems to be loads of advice on how to get the app and how to upload before you have the notification, but nothing on my situation, where it appears something is halting the startup of the download. I,ve made sure I have the correct IE version and all my updates are done, so what next?

To answer my own question, I've just noticed the "Windows.old" folder has disappeared without any forewarning. No sign of a "Last chance to rollback" message, not that I want to.

Looks like the 30 days limit is irreversible so be warned ;)

Now I'm wondering what would happen if I ever tried to reinstall Win 7 from the original disk :-\

One of the reasons why not to have Windows Update set to automatically install.  I've not been presented with the KB update for the white icon yet. ;D ;D  It looks like you only get the option to install it if you have Windows Update set to automatically install.

I am getting updates, and every time they instal themselves, my PC crashes/freezes. I restart it again and it crashes again. I restart it for a second time, and it runs "OK". Good old Microsoft.

I haven't updated to 10 and feel quite happy with 8.1

Possibly being naive here as it would seem as though all of RC have changed to 10........ including you Brian  :)

Being thick here...... what is your link saying?  :)

Malky: Same happens here, notice a download notification then bang everything stops.
[Using a laptop that should eat windows 10, I5 processor with 8Gb of memory]
Have to physically select install updates before I can use laptop normally.
Regarding my earlier post .
It was a warning about not being complacent regarding the windows 10 update.
[I updated as/when I decided to update, I don't want anyone to decide for me.]

I suspect that it would be safer for anyone who definitely doesn't want to upgrade at the moment, or possibly at all, to switch their Windows Update settings from "Install updates automatically" to either "Download updates but let me choose when to install" or "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".  Mine is set to the latter, just means you have to click a button to install but it would stop the upgrade patch from being installed automatically and then downloading the install which would appear to be, from the link that Calverley Lad posted, what is happening.

Hampshire Lass, I doubt you and I are the only RC'ers that haven't upgraded so I wouldn't worry.  Much better to let Microsoft iron out any of the continuing problems that have been reported before upgrading. ;D  Lets face it we've got until the end of July next year to upgrade for free anyway so there is no hurry.

Are you saying that if we have our Windows 8.1 set to update automatically then we may find we've automatically updated to Windows 10?

Sorry if I'm being thick  :)

OH needed a new laptop last week and of course it's windows 10. I notice that they've set it to update automatically but the updates it's attempted so far have been unsuccessful.

Good evening,

We were offered the free upgrade to 10 but didn't take it initially. I had a look at the blurb online and it seemed OK so then took it. A few days later a message came saying it was ready to download. First mistake, we have 3 accounts, admin, OH and mine. It would only open mine, the others disappeared so had to get junior over to sort it.

If you have more than 1 account it will always open to the last user regardless of whether you signed out or not. OK if you know that and what to do about it.

It wiped out 5 of the shortcuts that were on the left of the old screen but don't remember what they were except Norton which has been taken off and as yet not put back. Have to contact them AGAIN to get it back.

A lot of the simple tasks have been moved around or altered and have yet to locate them.

Second mistake, not getting Junior to give it the order of the boot.

John915

PS. Ours is set to auto update but that appears to be for system updates on whatever you have not for updating to a new system. Which is why we were offered it first not just given it.

I thought that should be the case  :)

I feel reluctant to change something that's working ok, so shall hold out for now.

You certainly seem to have had problems John  :'(

Read information this morning concerning Microsoft updates for Windows 7 and 8 which installs files in preparation for Windows 10.

I do have my updates set to automatic because I don't know enough to enable me to make the decision about whether a particular update is needed or not.

I don't know if it's only preparation files that are installed or whether eventually we would be enforced to change to Windows 10.

I don't actually have an issue with my OHs windows 10 computer but my reluctance to change mine is because I'm sure I would end up with a problem if I tried to install Windows 10 myself :)

My reasoning being that if something is working ok then leave well alone :)

I do have an issue with being forced to change though. In that instance I want to make the decision.

My question: Why should I change over to windows 10?
[Still got one desktop machine running windows 7 pro]
For the benefit of others: Will windows 7/8.1 receive future updates.
Extended service support when will that cease for windows 7/8.1.
Any takers to answer the above?

Did Google that one recently Brian and it reads to me as though 8.1 has mainstream support until 2018 and extended support until 2023.

If I'm right then that sounds good to me.

I believe you get nothing for free these days and being a cynical soul I just wonder why they are giving us a free upgrade. There must be something in it for them.....

Whoever "they" are  ;D

Windows 7 extended support seems to be 2020.

As one of those helping to iron out the problems  :P ;D . . .

I have also noticed that Windows sometimes crashes after an update, however, so far this only seems to happen when I leave it unattended during the update/restart :-\

If Windows crashes, the current desktop is not saved so it reverts to the layout before the last proper shutdown. This also applies to some other system settings - I think :)

Still generally liking Win10 so far.

Thank you for this link.
My anti-virus has been showing 4500+ files that haven't been scanned. I couldn't find the files doing a search and was worried in case they weren't "legit" files.
A savvy computer friend told me they were PROBABLY windows 10 files but wasn't 100% sure.
After reading the link they are definitely windows 10 files.
Not that i have windows 10 yet, my copy is reserved!
