Title: Peter Hampson 1861 and anything else please
Post by: KiwiHugh on Thursday 03 September 15 08:43 BST (UK)
Peter Hampson c1837 is showing up in the 1861 census. He states Hesketh (Lancashire) as his birth place. Could someone fill me in on the household information and if he can be sited in any other records please.

I am descended from William the Cooper but as his son William Spencer H. was the only one of twelve to survive to adulthood am now looking at the next generation back. William and his wife Margaret nee Spencer were very religous but not in a main stream way and hence they did not marry or baptise their children in a regular church. Glad you also agree that Peter from Hesketh is also the Peter very much from Little Hoole. Mind you going by Google maps you could just about throw a stone from one place to the other. But where is Peter after 1861?  :-\ William died in 1877, son William came out to NZ in 1879 and Mum Margaret followed in 1880. She crusaded here and Australia for 4 years drawing huge crowds, then scandel  :o. Went off to California with a married man and out lived son William by 5 years. But she was nice enough to add his name to her husbands tombstone back in Toxteth Park.

Gosh, what a web!  Not sure which is the most shocking  :o William the Cooper's son being only one of his 12 children to grow up to adulthood or his crusading mother upping sticks with a married man!

In  1837 on FreeBMD (Sep Qtr to Dec Qtr) there is just one Peter HAMPSON Birth Registration, in the Dec Qtr. In Preston.  None  in Preston in the next couple of years

As Hoole falls into the Preston District and as your Peter was christened in December 1837 in Hoole - that Birth Registration is perhaps likely to be his?

Because  I'd lay bets that  this is him :

Published in the Carlisle Patriot - Friday 10 December 1897
An Article titled: REMARKABLE RECORD IN LIFE SAVING WHITEHAVEN

It reports that on Tuesday, 7th December 1897, John HAMPSON of Whitehaven was presented with an "illuminated address from the Royal Humane Society" by the Chairman of the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, in honour of his (John) having saved a little girl from drowning in the Harbour.

The article goes on to say that John had been previously honoured in a similar way, for having saved three lives at San Francisco. He had also saved or tried to save in the past 15 years (so since about 1882) a further 25 lives at Whitehaven.

The article then adds that John's father, well-known fisherman Peter HAMPSON  had himself saved 20 lives - and that he (the Chairman) deems them to be a 'life-saving family'.

The Chairman apparently regretted that the Royal Humane Society  could not be persuaded to bestow a better recognition than the address, for John's courageous acts, but he (the Chairman) was glad he (John) had received a present from other sources.

Looks like John did eventually get that more tangible honour:
Published in the Lancashire Evening Post - Friday 12 December 1902
An article titled: GALLANT WHITEHAVEN MAN SAVED FORTY-NINE LIVES

It reports:  The Mayor of Whitehaven, presented on behalf of the Board of Trade, a Bronze Medal to John HAMPSON for gallantry & saving lives at sea. It reports that John is age 36  (so born abt 1866) and is a member of the Naval Reserve. It states John  has received two previous certificates of merit from the Royal Humane Society.

Later:
Wednesday 07 February 1923 Taunton Courier, and Western Advertiser
Friday 02 February 1923 ,  Western Gazette ,  Somerset
Wednesday 31 January 1923 ,  Gloucestershire Echo ,  Gloucestershire

All report:
'John HAMPSON, a Miner, who won the name of "Whitehaven's Lifesaver" has died. He rescued over 50 persons from Drowning'.

You have made my evening. :D  I had never heard of Whitehaven Cumberland till only recently. Peter's younger brother Thomas (1840) married a Jane nee Wilson who is born in Whitehaven. Thomas is unemployed in 1881 and they and 3 children are living with her parents. That is the 3rd record that I have found/been shown where my Hampsons are recorded as Thompson.

Ah, yes,  had a look &  - I think she is HAMPSON with some WILSONS??  ;D in Lancashire. The Census quality is quite bad - just having a go at working it out, will post details anon!

(On second thoughts, might not be her if she was a KYLE in 1871, but still will post)

Maybe not WILSONS either?

Can anyone else help make this Census out:

By heck. it looks like you have found sister Naney (Ann) baptised 1828 in Hesketh. Mum was Margaret nee Rimmer. Margarets and Johns marriage at OPC is under Thompson. Brother Thomas has a mother in law named Jemima Wilson
Oppps in  1861 Annie is living with Mum and brother Thomas and an 8 year old grandson James at 120 Portland Street

Woo   ;D  ;D so they are WILSONS?  I've been looking sideways and upsidedownways....

If so, that would make the M-In-Law there, Margaret HAMPSON, Peter's mother? She was 47 in 1851 so that would fit being 67 in 1871?

And to boot Annie is listed as unmarried in 1861. Unless Jemima and Anne/Jane are from an earlier marriage by Mr Wilson
Yes I was looking at that marriage the other day as a highly likely. 15 Dec 1867 at St Jude West Derby. right fathers with right jobs. Thomas was a railway officer and widower

Crikey I have to get up in 5 hours  ;D Seeing as you are so good at this, can you see (probably) Nanney's boy James Hampson who in 1861 was 8 and born in Liverpool . But having said that, the obvious baptism at OPC would have have him being closer to 10.

Luckily I can Sleep in a bit  tomorrow (later this morning!)   - once Suzanne Paul comes on the tele though,  I'll be off to bed  ;D  :P

Will have a look and see if  I can see James.

So just to get my head in order:   that 1861 Census  of WILSONs  just above there -  the daughter  Jane WILSON  the one who married Thomas HAMPSON, Peter's  younger brother?  So two HAMPSON siblings Ann (Nanney) & Thomas married two WILSON Siblings, Thomas & Jane?

......James Hampson ...... the obvious baptism at OPC would have have him being closer to 10.

Was that baptism in the Lanc OPC, St John the Evangelist, Abram, Lancashire on 26 Feb 1851 of James HAMPSON, son,  bp of Ann HAMPSON Spinster, Abode Abram?

That babe died, Burial on 9 Apr 1851 St John the Evangelist, Abram, Lancashire, England
James Hampson, age 6 weeks, Abode Abram.

Could James  not be Annie's, but rather belong to one of her brothers?

Would be good if it was as I am getting no where with brothers John and James. Will have to have a closer look at James births  Yes very much looks like  Nanney/Ann/Annie and Thomas married Wilson siblings.

Hello. Thanks very much Ambley for your super info about Peter hampson. I have been looking for his whereabouts too, as Margaret Hampson was my G grandma. Margaret emigrated to Canada in 1926 but my grandma stayed in the uk. I  haven't digested the info about Margaret hampson was was prior to 1861  Will have another read when fresher. I believe Peter must have been married twice, once to margaret's mother , then to Elizabeth Kyle nee Drewery.
It was passed on through the family that our ancestor was Elizabeth ann Drury... I think she's not.
Also that MH's husband was a minister in Liverpool ...can't be true. he was a fisherman.
Thanks again. INteresting! JulieManchester.

In my tree there are 2 generations of Margaret Hampsons. Margaret Spencer married to William. William was a cooper and they were lay street preachers. This was the couple who lost 11 out of their 12 children. William parents were farmers, John and Margaret née Rimmer.  William is buried in Toxteth Park and Margaret in what is now Greater Los Angeles. I have multiple cross references to these people.

(Reply to my own question) OPC ..online parish clerk? Kiwihugh, do you know what religion your ancestors preached? A snippett passed down via margaret hampson , peter's son, re the minister/ church- the liverpool irish were not fans of the religion and threw stones . Cheers, juliemanchester

Seeing as how their preaching was largely mixed with a Temperance message, it does not surprise me to hear the Irish threw stones  ;D Google "Who is Mrs Hampson?" Papers Past NZ. From Ambly's work I took it that John and Margaret Kyle/Hampson were Peters children which would make us 4th cousins and if not, 4th step cousins

Hello family! Past papers is excellent for finding more snippets . Sounds like the baptist church. I had thought  salvation army . The church could till be there..?
I hope to have a trip to see hesketh ( though there's not much of interest apart from the family connection) and any other places where the family lived I have been to whitehaven and st bees. Not been to abram and not sure if my margaret was there . Apart from the hampsons , they lived in whitehaven and frizington area.

Lay street preachers almost certainly means one of the Methodist Churches.
