Title: Barnetts of Staunton/ Dixton
Post by: mientajb on Thursday 03 September 15 15:49 BST (UK)
This was posted on the Forest of Dean forum site in 2011.

Curious why many left for New Zealand? (General)
by Carolann_nz, Tuesday, April 26, 2011, 05:41 (1591 days ago) @ J.Orr

My Barnett ancestors originally came from Dixton/Staunton area with the first family (Henry and Jane and 6 children) emigrating in 1863. Henry's brother Edwin with wife Charlotte and 4 children followed them in 1867. I am descended from the daughter of Henry and Edwin's brother James. James died in 1853, but 2 of his children joined their uncles in New Zealand: James in 1870 and my great grandmother Sarah in 1876.

So in the space of 13 years virtually the whole family had left the Forest of Dean and re-grouped in the Christchurch area of New Zealand.

I replied that they were part of my Barnett family but did not get a response, it was 4 years later after all.

I wonder if the correspondent no longer uses that forum, but maybe they are on Rootschat.

I should love to hear from you if you are.

Hi mientajb

Can't unfortunately help you with locating the researcher in the Forest of Dean forum, but there are numerous "online trees" (at ancestry.com site) for "Henry BARNETT (wife, Jane LEWIS) and Edwin BARNETT (wife, Charlotte HALL) - the sons of William BARNETT and Mary Ann KNIGHT".

Hi there. We have been quite successful in doing the research for the Barnetts who stayed in the UK. What I should really like to do is to contact the descendants of those people who went out to New Zealand. I should like to understand what the voyage was like, what happened when they first arrived. What life was like in their new home in Le Bon Bay, I think. How well did they thrive in New Zealand and what relatives I have there now. Did they take photographs of the people that they left behind as we have none. Are there photographs from when they landed.

I have a whole group of relatives in a country far away and yet I know very little about them.

Have you tired  http://www.akaroamuseum.org.nz/contactus.aspx  for photo's?  They may hold some info on the local families of Le Bons Bay (Old stamping ground for me as a child)  Not many families lived over there, but they certainly made their way over to Akaora from all the other surrounding Bays like Pigeon Bay etc to get married even some buried there.

Hi again

Making contact with those researchers who have "trees" online at the ancestry.com website (as mentioned previously), would hopefully assist in "getting in touch with descendants".    ;)

Our PapersPast website (New Zealand historical newspapers) is a wonderful site to seek out information.  ;)

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

As an example > here is the Obituary for Henry BARNETT junior (s/o Henry and Jane).

"Akaroa Mail and Banks Peninsula Advertiser" (Canterbury)  - 5 June 1936 - page 2 -- Henry BARNETT

and - the same newspaper - 4 August 1936 - page 3 -  New Church  ("search on Henry Barnett").

Also > "Evening Post" (Wellington) - 30 June 1936 - page 8 -- Valuable Estate

Lucy,

That is wonderful, thank you. Plenty for us to be getting on with.

I hope that I can contact some living relatives if only to let them know what happened to the family that they left behind of help them them with their own research.

Thanks again. Alan

Hello!!

I'm Sarah Barnett, a 6th generation Barnett in New Zealand. My parents are Removed Barnett, my father's grandparents are John (nee. Shura first name) Barnett and Mae Barnett. I have 4 siblings: Names removed

I'm currently in Le Bons studying my family history. I'm having trouble matching up the family tree for the 3rd generation.

I currently have Henry and Jane, who moved to NZ with their children MaryAnn 1842, William 1844, Ann 1847, Emma 1850, Henry Jr 1859 and Selina 1855.

William had 4 children and I think I might be Ernest's great granddaughter, but not sure.
William's children were Percival 1876 (died as an infant), Annie Selina 1877, Percival 1957 (Adopted after his sister Mary Ann died) and Ernest 1880.

If you have any information, I'd love to know! Please email me at Removed
I live in Christchurch currently, but grew up in Auckland + Waiheke Island. Planning to move to Canada soon. Maybe we can meet up in the future! :)

Sarah

Hi there. I think that we may be able to help you as we seem to be cousins. I come down from Henry's cousin ,
Edward (1822 of Staunton). We can go back to John Barnett born about 1685 who is also your direct line.
Henry, Jane and children emigrated to New Zealand in 1863 aboard the Captain Cook. They landed at Lyttleton in September of that year. The following year they moved to Le Bon's Bay.
If you go onto the Victoria University of Wellington library there is an on-line book called The Cyclopaedia of New Zealand ( Canterbury Provincial District ) section Le Bon's Bay. In this you will find the story of their lives. William built the church at Le Bon's, he was known as Holy Bill. His sister, Emma ( who married Antonio Leonardo , Portuguese ), made the first cheese in Le Bon's Bay.

If I can send you a private message with my email address, then I can send you a link to my family tree. We know of one person in New Zealand who has researched that part of the family in some depth. If you reply to us then we will get in touch with them on your behalf.
