Title: Sarah Board, born around 1780
Post by: Deirdre784 on Friday 04 September 15 21:17 BST (UK)
Hi, I'm looking for Sarah Board, born around 1780. She married Thomas Keitch in Ashill in 1803, had at least 5 children with him, and died age 78 in Ashill in July 1861 (buried at Blessed Virgin Mary on 21 July).

According to the 1851 census she was born in Taunton (age 69 / 1782); the 1861 says Hatch (age 82 / 1779). But the only baptism I can find is at Buckland St Mary in 1780. Looking at google today, this doesn't seem too far away from Taunton or Ashill (is Hatch likely to be Hatch Beauchamp?) but is it possible?

Thanks,

Deirdre

Hi, Freereg also has a Sarah Board baptised at St Andrews, Whitestaunton.  17 Feb 1782, parents Henry & Mary Board. Whitestaunton is south of Taunton towards Chard, although maybe too far away to be the area you are looking at.

Thanks jusnoneed,

Not sure why I didn't find that one; I searched on FreeREG for 10 years around 1780, choosing Ashill and ticking nearby places. I'm sure it only found the Buckland St Mary one last night but has found the Whitestaunton one now too.

Sadly the children don't help in either case as they were Aaron, Henry, Thomas, Ellen, Isaac and possibly Sarah. The Buckland St Mary parents are John & Rebecca.

Maybe it's neither of these  :-\

Just realised why the Whitestaunton one didn't come up last night; I searched for Taunton and nearby which produced nothing, so searched for Hatch Beauchamp and nearby which returned just the one at Buckland St Mary.

Not knowing the area doesn't help :)

Sarah and Thomas were married in Ashill in 1803 and I've only found children through the censuses so far as I can't find Ashill baptisms of that time online.

After the first two sons (Aaron born around 1804 and Henry around 1806) there is a big before the next around 1817, so Rebecca or Mary could have featured in there. The second son was Henry, so maybe Thomas' father was Aaron ....

There's an Aran Keetch burial at Ashill in 1797, but no age given.

Looking on Family Search there is a 1841 Census for Ashill showing Thomas Keitch 65-69 and wife Sarah. But the rest of the family have different names - Frank 35-39, Henry no age given, Thomas 20-24 and Sarah 19-23.

Hi jusnoneed, sorry only just seen your reply. The 1841 on both Ancestry and FindMyPast is unreadable so I wasn't sure of the children, but it looks good, thanks. I didn't know about Frank - he wasn't included even in the transcription on Ancestry - but have Henry (around 1806), Thomas (1817) and Sarah (1822).

Henry (age 45), Ellen (age 30) and Isaac (age 26) - all unmarried - were with Thomas and Sarah in 1851 (Thomas 1817 died earlier in 1851).

Hi - I realise it is a long time since this was posted but my research into the Keitch (Keetch/Kitch) family of Ashill keeps coming up with these posts. I am the great-grandaughter of Elizabeth Bertha Crabb born Ashill 10/3/1857. I think she was the daughter of Ann Keitch b. 1826 who married Henry Crabb b. 1824 in 1848. in the 1861 census Elizabeth (often listed as Bertha)  is with her uncle George Kitch and his family and in the 1871 census she is with her uncle Solomon Kitch and his family. I am assuming her parents had died and have found deaths on FreeBMD for Henry Crabb 1857 and Ann Crabb 1861 both in the  Chard area. In the 1851 census Henry and Ann had 2 other children George . 1848 and Ruth 1850 but I can find no further details for them. If anyone has an information on this or the ancestors of Ann Keitch I would be very grateful for any help.

Hi, i have Ellen Keitch, born around 1842, sister of Eliza, my husband’s 3rd great grandmother. Ellen married Edward Crabb in Ashill in 1863. Is this part of the same family (sorry only on my phone at the monent so hard to cross check).

Thanks - I don't have those names in my tree yet but both Keitch and Crabb seem to have been quite prolific names in the Ashill area so quite likely related. I have only managed to get back as far as Jacob Crabb 1796 married possibly to Frances, parents of Henry 1824 and on the Keitch side all I have is Ann 1826 with brothers Solomon 1818 and George 1823. Henry and Ann both died quite young it seems and I don't know what happened to their 2 older children George 1848 and Ruth 1850. Any more info gratefully received!

Managed to obtain some more info on my Kitch ancestors. Ann Kitch was the daughter of Eli 1786 and Isabella 1796 and on the 1941 census is listed along with siblings Soloman 1818, George 1823, Eli 1827 , Ruth 1831 and Thomas 1840 in Ashill. I'm sure there will be a link somewhere with your Keitch/Kitch ancestors but may need to go further back to obtain the relationship. I found this online and emailed David who has been very helpful http://www.davidkeetch.com/index.html

Apologies, as I haven't contributed for some time.  Over many years I have amassed a huge file of KEETCH and variants with a lead-in:

ASHILL
The boundaries of the Parish of Ashill are:
on the South by Ilminster & Broadway
   S.E.   Ilton
   E.   Whitelackington a detached part
   N.E.   Beer Crocombe
   N.   Stewley in Isle Abbots
N.W.   A detached part of Barrington
   W.   Broadway

Ashill Baptisms
[NB A note in the Baptisms Register – appearing to be a late insertion -  records ‘The Tax begun Oct 1st 1783’.  However, there are no notations of ‘P’ or ‘Poor’ against entries until 1788 and this very unpopular tax was repealed in 1794, resulting in clusters of ‘late’ baptisms for children born during that period.  The Stamp Duties Act 1783 had imposed a 3d tax on all entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials in Parish Registers and only the Poor were exempt from payment.]

Ashill Marriage by Banns by Thomas Alford [Vicar]
[no indication of marital status for either in Marriages Register or Banns book]
06 Apr 1803  Thomas KEETCH (x Mark) & Sarah BOARD (sgd) both of the same parish
Witnesses:  Sarah DALE (x Mark) & Elizabeth DALE (x Mark)

Issue:
√1804   Aaron, Son of Thomas KEETCH & Sarah his Wife was bapt April 4th
√1807   KETCH  Henry Son of Thomas & Sarah April 12
√1809   KETCH  Hannah Dr. of Thomas & Sarah Jul 2
√1812   KETCH, Rebecca, Dr. of Thomas & Sarah Jul 12

√ No 27   26 Mar 1815   Eliza      dau of Thomas & Sarah KETCH Ashill Labourer
√ No 70   10 May 1818   Thomas   son of Thomas & Sarah KETCH Ashill Labourer
√ No 371   26 Jul 1840    Ellen  (Adult     dau of Thomas & Sarah KEITCH Ashill Labourer
√ No 372   26 Jul 1840   Isaac (Baptisms  son of Thomas & Sarah KEITCH Ashill Labourer

I hope those details are of some use.  The ticks indicate a double check for accuracy between my transcriptions from poor early microfiche copies of the PRs and/or the images of Ashill Parish Registers to 1812 now available on-line at Ancestry.

1841 Household at Hastings, Ashill  [HO 107/929/1 Enumeration Schedule 4 page 3]
Thomas Kitch   65      Ag lab   [1851 aged 70 + Henry 45, Ellen 30 & Isaac 26]
Sarah Kitch   65            [1851 aged 69 born Taunton: 1861 aged 82 born Hatch]
Aaron Kitch   35   [FindMyPast transcript Frank]     Aaron bur 29 Sep 1843 aged 39
Henry Kitch   30
Thomas Kitch   20
Sarah Kitch   19   [v. faint Christian name & age - all others 'rounded down' to nearest 5]

The Ancestry image is slightly clearer than FindMyPast.

I have loads more KEETCH & variant records to share but I'll have a serious crack for Sarah BOARD over the weekend.

Thanks for all the info dee-jay, that's brilliant. Strange there's no baptism for Sarah (on the 1841). But ties in with what I have of the family.  :)

I have not been idle! ::)

Thanks dee-jay, will do.

Have been re-examining a later section on this branch of my tree for the last few days too, sadly a few options making it difficult to prove 🤔
