Hi I have a John Doyle b abt 1842 in Dublin who was living with his parents Michael Doyle and Catherine on the 1861 census in Margam Glamorgan South Wales, Michael Doyle and Catherine gave their place of birth as Kildare Ireland, I cannot find anymore about the parents thereafter and think they may have returned to Ireland
John Doyle however married Frances Norah Finnegan in 1869 in Gosport Hampshire and they had 9 children quite a few in different locations as John Doyle was in the Army, on his son's MC he was described as Quartermaster Sergeant in the 13th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry although I am not sure how accurate that is
By 1878 he was living in Kilsyth Stirlingshire Scotland but was still an Instructor in the Army and by 1901 he was a clerk in a Quarry
Why I am so interested is that my mother before she married used to come from Newbridge Co Kildare to visit relations in Kilsyth who were Millers but she also talked about Arthur Doyle who was a descendant of the above John Doyle
My mother's father was Scottish but her mother was Irish and after her father retired from the Army they settled in Newbridge and I know that both my grandfather and g grandfather who was also in the Army had connections to the Curragh Camp and my mother went to school there
I am hoping that this might jog some memories

from the 1871 army index
this could be him?
First name(s) John
Last name Doyle
Service number 1220
Rank Sergeant
Unit or Regiment 2nd Bn 13th (1st Somersetshire)(Prince Albert's Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot
HQ location Pembroke Dock, Wales
maybe not as this John Doyle is also in the 1861 index
First name John
Last name Doyle
Service number 1220
Rank Private
Unit or Regiment 2nd Btn 13th Foot (1st Somerset-Prince Albert)
Regiment stationed at King Williams Town-Cape of Good Hope
Year 1861

Can you quote the 1861 census reference...i cant find him ;)
-
Hi Thank you for your replies, this looks like John Doyle on the Army Index but I don't think it can be given what I have on him
1861 census RG9/ 4080/ 121 p 263 but this of course might not be him
He married Frances Norah Finnegan 26 April 1869 Gosport Hampshire
1871 Census RG10/3501/91 p 16
1881 Parish: Stirling; Married Quarters; Page: 16; the first 3 children were born in Ireland which makes me wonder if he was at the Curragh for a time
1891 Parish: Kilsyth; ED: 5; Page: 25; Line: 17
Maybe this will help

I never figured out what to do with those Census number thingys so does this fit?
Curragh Camp
May 6 1872
Annie Daughter of John Doyle & Fanny Finnigan
Joseph Doyle Annie Finnigan (I think)

Top of right page.
-
Oh Thank you so much yes that is them which confirms the Curragh Camp connection I think that my grandfather Alexander Cockburn was stationed there at some time and on the 1871 census John Doyle was at Defensible Barracks at Pembroke
Are Joseph Doyle and Annie Finnegan witnesses if so I think I have found Joseph Doyle as well in Scotland
-

Sponsors/Godparents
The surnames make them look like an uncle and aunt of the child, but would John and Frances have family in the area?
What were the names and approx date of births for the other children born in Ireland?
-
I was having a look at your other threads trying to see what the connection to the Doyle's was but noticed the Cockburn connections to Kildare
Not sure if this link will work

There is also ads for the company in earlier editions.

Probate granted to Alexander

Second from the bottom right hand page, gives William as an Engineer and Alexender as Sergeant RE
Going back to the Kildare Observer, there is a William Cockburn Inspector for the WaterWorks who had to be replaced in 1908 because he died.
-
The answer to your first question yes I think they would, and another child born in Ireland was Arthur born 17 Aug 1874 in Antrim the other one was John Doyle born abt 1870 but I think he may have been born in Hampshire shortly after their marriage in 1869 in Gosport Hampshire
Your next bit of information is correct this is my grandfather Alexander Cockburn and his mother Louisa Cockburn
Thank you for all this it is really appreciated
-
As regards to William Cockburn inspector of the Waterworks could well be my g grandfather William Cockburn who was living at Kilbelin in 1901 and was described as an engine driver with the Royal Engineers also pensioner with the Royal Engineers he died in Kildare in 1908

-
can you list when and where their children were born ?
The Doyles or the Cockburns?
Cockburns only had Alexander according to the 1911 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kildare/Newbridge_Urban/Canning_Place/568384/
-
I have attached a file for Alexander Cockburn and family, John Doyle and Frances Finnegan had John Doyle abt 1870 could be Hampshire although in the censuses they said he was born in Ireland Annie and Arthur already known and Ernest Joseph you have already listed Robert 1880 Francis Nora 1882 Charles Edwin 1884 and Harry not sure of date, they were all born in Stirlingshire
I also have Joseph Doyle who I am pretty sure is John Doyle's brother he was the witness on Annie Doyle's birth record and his daughter Agnes Doyle was living with a family in Kilsyth one of whose family had married a Doyle , I traced her back to Joseph Doyle and mother Jane Coutts
I found Jane and children on the 1901 census in Edinburgh I could never find Joseph on any of the censuses until 1911 so I think he may also have been in the Army
Alexander Cockburn and family are on the 1911 Irish census in Co Cork just before Alexander retired from the Army
Obviously John Doyle on the 1861 census in Wales is not the John Doyle I thought he was I think he is the one on the 1861 & 1871 Army Index
By the way my uncle Stuart William Cockburn b 1894 in Bermuda was not on the 1911 census with the rest of the family I think he may have already joined the Army perhaps at the Curragh 3 Signals TPS Royal Engineers Reg No 19677 he was discharged as insane 4 Mar 1921 at Chattam as Acting Lance Corporal RL Corps of Signals Reg No 2306248 and I have never been able to find out what became of him apart that he spent the rest of his life in an Institution I don't even know when or where he died his brother Malcolm Charles Cockburn Royal Engineers 23025 was killed in action in France 4 Apr 1916
I do have William Cockburn's Service Record

i think we need to find some original baptisms to check the parents of these children.
eg Edward John Doyle b 16th August 1868 baptized 1st September in Subathoo,Bengal....parents John and Anna Doyle....John is a private in the 90th Light infantry.
Also baptized same time and place,,same details,,,so definitely twins Ellen Doyle b 1868.
-
There is a John Doyle b 1839 Wexford who joins the 80th regiment in 1859,,,then transfers to the 90th in 1866....he serves 6 years in India. He has the numbers 587 in the 80th and 1381 in the 90th regiment.
He was discharged in 1880,,,,intended residence Hamilton.
Maybe this John accounts for some of the births of children in India.
Just trying to discount people,,,it would be good to find YOUR John Doyles service record. :)

there is a note in Stuart Cockburns National School Admissions record that says he was Admitted to this school in 1905,,,,then left "for Hong Kong " same year.

Birth date 02 Jun 1894
Event year 1905
School name Upper Meyrick Street and Albion Square School, Pembroke Dock

Country Wales
Parent name(s) Alexander

I would love to find John Doyle's service record he definitely did not have children in India
I have found his DC he died 1913 in Stirlingshire his parents were Michael Doyle bookbinder and Margaret Roe so the Joseph Doyle who I feel has a connection is not John's brother as he gave his parents as John Doyle and Anne Buggi on his marriage cert so perhaps they were cousins
As for Stuart Cockburn he must have joined the Royal Engineers while his father Alexander was stationed at Pembroke Dock Stuart's sister Louisa Beatrice was born there in 1904
I must thank you again for all the time you are taking on this I do appreciate it

Have just come across your findings on John Doyle and Frances Finnegan. They were my great grand parents. My father was Arthur Doyle (born in Glasgow January 3rd 1904 - died in Falkirk June 1984) He went to Glasgow University, taught History and English in Paisley and Lennoxtown, then became a Primary School Head Teacher in and around Falkirk. His father was Arthur, son of John and Frances (Finnegan) Doyle who was born in Ireland, and shows up on the 1891 census as a 16 year old living in Dunbreath St, Kilsyth. He died in 1904, six months after my father was born, after marrying Isabella Stevenson who lived at Parkburn, with her children, (my father and his sister Agnes), after her husband's death.
I have a copy of the Gazeteer of Scotland which belonged to John Doyle (signed Jno Doyle, Sergeant Instructor, Stirling Castle 18th June 1880), inside which is what I assume are the sergeant's stripes from his uniform.
The only siblings of Arthur (my grandfather) that I know anything of were:
- Annie, who married a police constable called Edmund Hogan, and their son Edmund Albert was Registrar General for Scotland in the 1950s.
-Fanny (Frances) who married Charles Austin and had two daughters Isabel and Nora. They lived in Rothesay.
Hope that helps

Hello
You have made my day, it is great to hear from a member of the Doyle family, there is a connection with my family
It has taken me a long time to work it all out as all I knew to start with, was that my mother used to visit cousins in Kilsyth by the name of Stevenson and Miller and she used to talk about Arthur Doyle and Parkburn House
My mother's maiden name was Cockburn, her father Alexander Cockburn was in the army, he married Kathleen McIntyre who was born in Antrim Ireland, it was through her that there was the relationship to the cousins who were Kathleen Taggart Miller who married Harry Otley Stevenson, he was related to Isabella Ecklin Stevenson the other Miller sister Jenny married Peter St Clair
I was born and brought up in Falkirk Stirlingshire and I am pretty sure that my mother never knew that Arthur was living in the Falkirk area as I am sure she would have made contact, she was in touch with one of the St Clairs who lived in Falkirk
Who did Arthur marry and how many children did he have?
My mother's name was Ivy and her sister was Katherine (Kate) Cockburn and they both visited Kilsyth prior to 1936 my mother then married Alexander Dennison and settled in Falkirk
Thank for the information you have sent and for getting in touch

Thanks for interesting response. My father Arthur Doyle married Jessie Baxter, also from Kilsyth, in September 1945 and they had one child (me) in 1949. I know very little about my grandmother Isabella Ecklin Stevenson and have no photos, just a couple of her books. I need to untangle the Stevensons when I can find some time but I remember talk of my father's Uncle Bob and Uncle Harry, and I remember his cousin John running a grocer's shop in Kilsyth. I also have a very vague memory of Crichton at Parkburn when I was a child. My maternal grandparents and my two aunts lived in Horsbrugh Avenue in Kilsyth and I was a regular visitor there when I was younger.
I was brought up in Laurieston and went to Falkirk High in the 1960s.

I also went to Falkirk High School but that was in the 50s
