Title: William Lewis LANE
Post by: chr1st1an on Saturday 05 September 15 17:31 BST (UK)
Hi everyone!  :)

I am searching for all information available on William Lewis LANE born around 1823 in Cheltenham.
He was the father of Horace William LANE born 1866.

I would like help to find his date and place of birth, marriages and maiden names of spouses (I think they must have been two), names of children, and dates of death of William Lewis and wives.

Thank you all!!!

William Lewis LANE married Hannah HALL - Cheltenham Register Office 1859

...and then married "Susannah" SWEENEY JUN qtr. 1869 at Hemel Hemstead...  ???
That means he went back home and remarried. Could this be checked out with the census?

William Lewis LANE

Am looking for information on William Lewis Lane (my great grandfather) born in Hemel Hempstead approx 1825, he married Hannah HALL in Cheltenham had a daughter born there Laura Jane LANE 1862 and returned to Hemel two more children Annie Maria LANE 1864? and Horace William LANE 1865.  His wife Hannah died at age 37 1868.

William re-married a Susan SWEENEY (widow: Maiden name WOOD)  1869.

William was a bootmaker and had his own business on High St.  Hemel.

The family moved north in Barrow in Furness Lancs between 1871-1881.  Any info on relatives much appreciated. Thanks

1881 Lancashire Census

William L. LANE (53) [should be 58] Occ. Chimney Sweep; and
Laura J. LANE (19) Occ. Milliner b. Cheltenham

living at 275 Rawlinson Street, Barrow in Furness.

In the 1891 Lancashire Census:
at 275 Rawlinson Street, Barrow in Furness, are living Horace William LANE (son) and his wife Isabella M LANE.

So where was William Lewis in 1891?   ???

DEATHS
Hannah LANE, DEC qtr. 1861 (no age) Cheltenham
&
Hannah LANE, MAR qtr. 1868 (37) Hemel Hampstead

I've realized that the first one could not be, since Hannah's children were born post 1861:

BIRTHS
Laura Jane LANE b. SEP qtr. 1861 at Cheltenham;

Annie Maria LANE b. SEP qtr. 1863 at Hemel Hampstead; and
Mary Ann LANE b. MAR qtr. 1864 at Cheltenham

Horace William LANE b. MAR qtr. 1866 at Hemel Hampstead (although one tree on FamilySearch says born 22 December 1865).

----------------------------------------

Another curiosity is that according to the 1881 Gloucestershire census there was a household living at 2 Burton Terrace, Cheltenham with:
William C. Lane (!) b.1828, Occ: Cabinet Maker, his wife Hannah (!), and daughters: Ellen, Laura (!) & Louisa.
[The 3 exclamations are for the coincidences with the William Lewis LANE family]  :o

Hi

Death of wife Susannah

Susannah Lane:  March Qtr 1882 Barrow in Furness aged 53

Wife in 1881 is possibly the Susan Lane, a married housekeeper in Islington London ( birth year c1829 born in Lydd, Kent ~ same as 1871 census)

In the 1871 census, Susannah's place of birth seems to be writen "Lyed".
Is "Lydd" pronounced "Lyed"?

I have seen the 1881 census (at Islington), but it seems a bit weird that she went so far away to work... I'm not saying is not her (I think it IS her), but I find it strange...

I can't seem to find a marriage between Mr. SWEENEY and Susan or Susanah WOOD,
Can anyone else please have a look?

Thanks!

Hi

Have found her in 1851 Gillingham, Kent and in 1861 London with husband William Sweeny/Sweeney.

Looks like William Sweeney was her second husband

Marriage in Gillingham Kent on 22 Nov 1848

William SWEENEY married Susan RANGDALE
Grooms Father: John Sweeney
Brides Father: Edward WOOD
Both parties : Widowed.

Here's a link to the marriage cert.

Hi

Susan WOOD married William RANGDALE in Canterbury 1838. In 1841 they are in Hounslow Barracks London, William being a soldier.

So she must have fibbed about her age a bit in later years, as 1841/51/61 she is consistent with a birthdate of c1820, so I think this must be her baptism

SUSANNAH WOOD bp. 4 June 1820 daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Wood, parish of LYDD.
