Title: Irene Davies lookup request
Post by: emre43 on Friday 18 September 15 08:30 BST (UK)
I am trying to find information on my great grandmother, Irene Davies (19 June 1905-May 1980). She married Thomas John Moyle in September 1928 in Middlesex. Her father was Henry Davies who was a coal miner in Wales.

This is the only information I possess. I cannot find her on any Welsh, or English censuses!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks in advance

Tom

There will only be 1911 census that she could be in. And unfortunately look ups for that one are not allowed.

Have you got her birth cert to give both parents names and her mothers maiden name?
If you havent, then it will be hard to narrow down which one in the birth indexes is her, to enable you to get it, as there are several of that name in that year in Wales.

Pm on its way with a likely family!

Of course! Where are my brains this morning? She could have only been in the 1911 census. I think I meant I can't find her family on any other censuses.

I'm not sure how you would find her family on any other census, without confirming from 1911 that they do indeed have a daughter Irene!
Especially as you have pm'd to say you are not happy with the one I did find!!

I'm sure there are many Henry Davies who are coal miners around in Wales, seeing as it is one of the most common names and occupations, so from the other censuses alone you will have no way of knowing if they later had a daughter called Irene.

Where did your date of birth for "your" Irene come from? Was it just from her death? If so , remember that the information given at death was only as reliable as the knowledge of the person giving it. Not unusual for it to be a year or two out.
Likewise, census ages can be slightly out - not unusual for a dad filling in the details of his 9 children (as is this case in the census in question) getting one of their ages a year out!

I wouldn't rule this one out too quickly.

Who were the witnesses when she married? Maybe they are siblings, which would help rule this one out or in.

I know they had a daughter called Irene based on the fact that in her marriage certificate to my great grandfather her birthday is stated as being 1905 and her father as Henry Davies (coal miner).

I think I will have to go along with the census that you found as it is the closest to being her as I can find.

Thank you so much for your help, it is much appreciated!

Where did she marry? English certs dont give a birth date.
Who were the witnesses?

(when I said don't rule this one out, that doesn't necessarily mean accept it as correct without trying to find some more evidence to confirm it, or to rule it out)

Yes, as you say, you know a Henry Davies had a daughter Irene, but you don't know which Henry - isn't that what you are trying to find?

I think I may have just found her on the 1911 census:

Henry Davies - 31 - coal miner
Mary Elizabeth - 28
Lettie - 7
Irene - 5
Edward John - 4

That looks a strong possibility.

Just need some sort of evidence to back it up! As I said, just because the age of the other one was out by a year doesn't make it a complete non starter.

Your Irene could be either of these, or neither.

Though the latest find is certainly looking most likely.
