I am sure that it was here that I saw a post which gave a link to a website of deaths in coal mines.
I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.
Thank you

Sandra.
Thanks for your suggestion, but I am looking for a death in Merthyr Tydfil in the 1880s. I did look when I first saw the post, I found the name I was looking for but I was not sure of the date of birth. I usually bookmark useful pages but I can not see the web page in my bookmarks. Another senior moment!!!!

Many thanks, it was not the site I saw but I did find a gentleman of the same name but not the ame birth year. A negative result is better than no result.
Thank you very much

Can you tell us who you are looking for ?

Evan Hughes born 1845 in Darowen Montgomeryshire.
Married Sarah Jones in 1870
1881 has the family in Llanbrynmair.
Sarah died in 1882.
Unable to find him in 1891.
Family story is that the children were farmed out and he went to work in the coal mines in South Wales and that he was killed in a mining accident.
The reason that I was homing in on Merthyr Tydfil was because I have found her cousin and family there on the 1891 census.
I have been looking for him off and on for years with no luck.

many thanks.
Nearest I have had for years, worth sending for death certificate.
This is the nearest one I can find on Freebmd.
But it is in the first quarter of 1885.
HUGHES Evan 38 Merthyr T. 11a 361
Could there be a delay in registering the death as it was an accident?
-
If an inquest was held, the death will be registered in the quarter when the inquest was completed. Particularly if there was an adjournment, this may be some time after the actual death and the entry may be in a later quarter than you anticipate. The coroner can authorise the burial before the inquest, but the death cannot be registered until after the inquest verdict

Not totally relevant to the Welsh accident but very useful for tracing Durham Mining Accidents is the Durham Mining Museum site:

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am going to send for the death certificate in the hope of getting any information otherwise it will end up on the growing pile of wrong certificates. Win some, loose some seems to be my luck with certificates.

According to newspaper reports the inquest was held 9th Jan 1885, unfortunately Evan and three others were killed when a rope broke when they were descending for work, only info gleaned about Evan Hughes was that he was married, had a family and was a member of the Permanent Relief Fund.

I have managed to find newspaper accounts of the two December inquests which were defered, but not the Jan one.
info from those accounts:
he was identified by his brother John.
He had four children. Both would fit with "my" Evan
But one account says
"His children are with his mother in Caernarvonshire, it is believed."
His children were with his mother but in Montgomeryshire
Will you please tell me where you found the account of the January index.
Thank you very much

Hi,
Western Mail 9th Jan 1885 (available Findmypast) Conclusion of the Coroners Inquiry, Treharris Mining Accident.
This account consists mainly of the evidence of John Dodds. There are no details or clues for Evan Hughes in this account unfortunately.

Just to say that if you are searching the British Newspaper Archive you search for "Treharris Colliery Accident"

Many thanks. Found the Western Mail account.
Also found that John Hughes, Evan's brother, was in Merthyr Tydfil on the 1891 census.
I'll keep an open mind as to whether the Evan Hughes of the Treharris mining accident was my husband's ggrandfather.
