Hi,
Im just back from the archieves in Ashington.. Im trying to find my ancestors marriage..
Basically the only thing i have to go off is a walking stick which was presented to him on his Golden Wedding Anniversary (50 years) on 1st April 1889.. making his wedding 1st April 1839..
I cant find it anywhere in the Northumberland archives.
James Nelson Trainer (only have his baptism date 13 sept 1818) Berwick-upon-tweed
Eleanor (dont have her maiden name, this was why im after the marriage) born around 1820 Tweedmouth
Im starting to wonder if Eleanor is maybe a middle name.
I cant send off for the marriage certificate as i dont have James actual birth date..
any help on this would be much appreciated as my heads done in ???
Many thanks
Liz

You owe me a cupcake. I looked on SP and he was born 19th of May.
If you send me a PM with your email address I will send you the document.

Hi Don,
Is it the marriage that you've found or his d.o.b?
just re-read you said born ::)
Thanks for checking it out
will it not let you send the link via the message board on here?

False alarm :(

If no one can help I suggest you get Mary Janes Birth Cert to get Eleanors maiden name.
Is strange as she is the only Child I can find a Baptism for;
MARY JANE Trainer 27 March 1840, All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Parents JAMES/ELEANOR
Abode, Painterheugh
Fathers Occupation, Cordwainer
(FreeREG)

Iv just had a look at the freegen site and it came up as an error for me, but I will do that with Mary Janes birth certificate..
Thanks Trish :)

www.freereg.org.uk (I went to the old site) but you can use the new one :)
-
Yes iv just had a look at the old site. The other children have been baptised in berwick, there's a few of them lol
Thanks again :D

Thought this might be of some interest to you, perhaps it was the corporation
that presented him with the walking stick.

That makes the Marriage 1849 not 1839 as stated earlier ???.
-
Hi Terry h
Where did you find that article, as I do have the Golden Wedding article also and the date on mine is 9th April 1889
http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000470/18890409/022/0004
I also found the grave and the Probate that he died 14th March 1890

Oh my goodness, my mistake, I keyed 1898 instead of 1889...sorry for the confusion :o :o

No worries, thanks for having a look though :)

** Eleanor Hope ** :D :D
I'm so pleased to know this eventually after having the money to purchase 1 of the childrens birth certificates.
Thing is, I still can't find any entries for her.
On the census she has down, from Tweedmouth. on the family gravestone she died in 1899 aged 79, making her d.o.b between 1819 and 1821 depending if she had a birthday before hand or not.
can anyone help with tracing anymore information about her please :)

There is another Eleanor Hope born Tweedmouth around the same time it seems. Just adding for this 1851 census entry elimination and perhaps extended family?

Just an update..
Spent a full day at Berwick records office the other day, still no marriage record found for my James and Eleanor.
We checked online and in records held at Berwick, without any luck.. being advised that sadly sounds like it was an irregular marriage.
Don't think il ever find where they married.. :(

The only hope (joke) I can give you is there is a JOHN/MARY Hope Baptising Children in Tweedmouth in the right time frame.
John is a Seaman.

So even though we cant find a Baptism for Eleanor Hope or a marriage for her to James Nelson Trainer I definitely think going by the Census I posted her Parents would be JOHN/MARY Hope.

Sarah HOPE, Single, Father JOHN
James ENGLISH, Single, Father JAMES
(Familysearch.Org)
Possible Baptism for MARY ANN Hope, Neice on 1851 Census;

1861 Mary Hope is still with the English Family born c 1790 Long Benton, Northumberland.
Down as Mother in Law to James English.
Still with them in 1871 born c 1790 Northd, Sweedmonth(sic)
-
ooo thank you Trish, yes i did have Mary Hope living in with the English family, and the James trainer living with English, what i didnt know though was Elizabeth and Sarah Hope as twins, thank you for that. and for another pair or eyes to confirm im with the right family.
still hoping something, somewhere might eventually show up for their marraige

It is possible they never married. It happened more often than we would think :)
-
not 100% sure
but i have seen a walking stick which was presented as a golden wedding gift (inscribed with the date), also a newspaper entry for the 50th wedding anniversary, as both James and Eleanor Trainer were given numerous gifts from different people (the corporation, also the Good Templars, aswel as family)
